Gun Hawthorn recruit Shaun Burgoyne is in doubt for his club’s AFL season opener against Melbourne on March 27 because of a hamstring injury.
The former Port Adelaide midfielder has suffered a low grade tear to his hamstring and is no certainty to be ready in time for the clash with the Demons at the MCG.
“Burgoyne, who was set to make his Hawks debut in the final round of the pre-season challenge, will now look to the early rounds of the home-and-away season to run out for the Hawks,” the club said in a statement.
“Scans have revealed that the injury, which occurred at the end of team training on Wednesday, was not as bad as first thought.”
It continues a frustrating run with injury for Burgoyne, the classy onballer’s 2009 and final season at the Power ruined by knee surgery.
Hawthorn’s general manager of football operations Mark Evan said the club would be conservative in its approach to the injury.
“He felt a grab at the back of the hammy toward the end of training,” said Evans.
“A scan showed later today that he had a low grade tear.”

The Hawks were in dire need of a decent ruckman, but instead of pursuing the services of someone like Darren Jolly they gave up two high picks for a midfielder they didn’t need who is struggling with injuries. I think Hawthorn lost out on that trade.

Bit early to call I’d say Tommix. You very well may be right but I’ll reserve my judgment until the end of the season. He is a great player and adds speed and precise kicking which is what we need in our midfield. If the Hawks can regain Max Bailey and Lowden and Grimley continue to develop our poor ruck division could become a strength over the coming years. If we can get (and then keep) Burgoyne, Bateman, Rioli, Young and Osborne on the paddock for the season I see our midfield causing some real headaches for the opposition this year.
