As an advertisement for the A-League and for finals football, you can hardly ask for a better five or six hours than we saw yesterday, with two games, across two countries, going the distance.
We got colour, crowds, cracking goals and class, in abundance.
After a wonderful Wellington crowd and some typical wizardry from Paul Ifill saw the Phoenix continue their imposing home record with an extra time win over the Jets, it was over to the second leg of the major semi final, and what a fantastic game those of us at the SFS were dished up.
While 98% of the almost 24,000 crowd left disappointed as Melbourne sealed grand final hosting rights for the third time in four seasons, it was hard not to have enjoyed this classic.
It was gripping throughout, as the play and the pendulum swung from one team to the other and back again.
Talk about a game living on a knife’s edge.
In the end Melbourne had the bigger guns to bring off the bench, able to draw upon the class of Archie Thompson and Marvin Angulo, and the legs of Evan Berger.
The introduction of Thompson and Berger, midway through the second period, and Angulo a short time later, swung the momentum back in Melbourne’s favour at a time when Sydney were threatening to run away with the game.
Credit then to Ernie Merrick for taking the gamble, and to the Melbourne Victory medical staff for even getting Thompson back on the pitch so soon.
Given the tie was locked at 3-3 on aggregate after Mark Bridge’s breathtaking piece of work on the edge of the box early in the second half, Merrick could have been forgiven for waiting to make his substitutions, but he correctly sensed something need to be done.
Sydney were all over his side, and the Victory looked to be struggling to make any impression in the front third as Robbie Kruse, who had an excellent first period, capped by an outstanding solo strike, became isolated in the early part of the second.
By introducing Thompson, suddenly Melbourne had fresh legs and a threat in the front third, and against a tiring Sydney side, they started asking questions again.
Fortunately for Sydney, Clint Bolton was in fine form.
While Sydney dominated the possession and territory in the first period by a staggering ratio of 67% to 33%, the Victory had looked a real threat on the counter attack.
Merrick’s game plan was obvious. Melbourne were happy to sit back, soak it up and look to hit Carols Hernandez as the first outlet. His job was to spin and hit Kruse, who was always looking to find space wide and beyond Sydney’s backline.
While Sydney dealt with most things, they backed off Kruse and gave him enough space to shoot in the 15th minute, and some strike it was.
Vitezslav Lavicka’s men had started the game very upbeat, with Stuart Musialik dictating the tempo and Alex Brosque and Mark Bridge looking to combine in the front third and cause headaches for Kevin Muscat, Adrian Leijer and Rody Vargas.
While Lavicka had pledged patience throughout the week, he started with a very offensive formation, with Bridge and Brosque joined by John Aloisi in a three pronged attack.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Ryall and Sung Hwan Byun were pressing forward on the flanks at every opportunity and pinning back Melbourne’s wing-backs, Surat Sukha and Leigh Broxham.
But Kruse’s wonder strike rocked the hosts, who had to now prove they could come from behind for only the second time this season.
It looked a tough ask, but they got down to work, and had a touch of luck when Strebre Delovski awarded them what looked a soft penalty.
From there Sydney got on top, and in front, and it was only the depth at Merrick’s disposal that shifted the momentum back to the visitors.
Even before extra time Sydney looked to be struggling, but in almost customary Lavicka style, he stuck with the status quo.
Clearly he didn’t have the cattle at his disposal that Merrick did, but surely his team could have done with the fresh legs of Chris Payne and Brendan Gan a lot earlier.
Brosque, especially, was limping around with what looked a tight hamstring, for some time.
Perhaps Lavicka was trying to nurse him to the penalty spot, and perhaps his defence was thinking about penalties when Thompson caught them out, getting on the end of a rapidly taken Muscat fee-kick to silence the SFS.
Needing two goals, Sydney had no time and no legs.
Now Melbourne go on to host yet another grand final, and given their imposing home form this season, and how crucial home form has been in the second half of this season, they are now clear favourites to lift the golden toilet seat for the third time.

yeah is a great sunday afternoon, just have to know my limits when work is on the next day!!
Great game, but jaded by the result. Oh well. I don’t think melboune needed to host another GF, would have been much better in sydney.
I think if sydney is to back it up next year, finishing first, they need to add some experience to the squad, the bench is very light, gan, payne are probably not quite ready yet.
Foxe looked good to me, so I hope we keep him.
Byun? many times ive been annoyed by him, but he played pretty well last night.

Bosnich said, who is from NSW “The controversial decisions that went on in the second half, all went against Melbourne. Over the course of a game these things usually even themselves out”.
If any Sydney people seriously think they were hard done by, then they didn’t have their eyes open.
-Countless ONSIDES went against Melbourne which would have resulted in 1-2 goals,
- Archie had a clear as day penalty not called, if the referee was consistant then either that penalty should have been awarded to Archie OR Brosque’s penalty should have not been awarded.
- Sydney had a couple of handballs in the box, like Melbourne.
-A Melbourne player got an elbow to the face, if this was by a Victory player than it would have been a 2 week suspension.
-Kisel already on a yellow, foots Berger in the neck, how was this not an automatic second yellow or a straight red?
at 110 minutes, Mcflynn heads a ball and incorrectly gets called for handball. Although seeing as he intentionally went out of his way to hurt Kruse 3 weeks ago and gets nothing for it, is this kharma?
And a tip, for a player to be offside, the striker has to be infront of ANY defender, the moment the ball is kicked.
If both players are level, then it is onside, in Archie’s case, he was half a grass square behind the last defender. Use the grid squares on the pitch to determine the position of players.
And if you pause 1 second after the pass is made, then you are too late, you have to pause at 0.01 seconds after the ball leaves the foot. The refereeing was atrocious, if it went to a penalty shootout, we were speculating whether or not Melbourne’s penalties would be called offside as well.

Watching a totally different game to me.
If you talk about Karma, then Kevin Muscat should have been sent off in the 1st minute for wearing football boots.
Kisel shouldn’t been book in the first place, this was Big Kev refereeing the match, Kisel went for a block on Surat & hardly made contact.
Open your eyes.

I wonder if we were watching the same game?
If you don’t believe me feel, free to watch the full match replay, not just some silly highlights that miss out on almost every event.
If you are from Sydney and you were at the game, then most things controversial would not have been up on the TV screen, you would have missed so much!
Such a dramatic match!

I was at the game & I’ve seen the replays, I have Foxtel, what swings around comes around.
Kisel should been booked for tackle on Berger, but should not have got 1st booking on Surat, see replay it was MusCAT doing his normal refereeing.
Thompson was not offside when clear one on one once. No freekick for Thompson’s winner, this was a header (no Karma crap), this shows how much you know, the tackle by McFlynn 2 weeks ago was illegal, but not malice, these sort of tackles happen in every match, Muscat does far worse every game.

You say “I was at the game & I’ve seen the replays” but judgeing on your opinion, I don’t think you have seen the full replay.
There were at least 3 bad Offside calls where MV were clearly onside, possibly more and i’m not talking about the decisions where the MV player is half level half behind the defender, those decisions are fine, i’m talking about the ones that were clearly onside. Kruse got booked in one of them for kicking the ball away in frustration.
Leijer’s forceful nudge on Brosque was stupid and a deserved penalty, the foul on Thompson inside the box was even more blatent yet was not given. And of course Kisel deserved his first yellow, it was a clumsy foul, Muscat wound him up and Kisel fell for it. And a foot to the throat is a straight red in the EPL or Champions League whether he is going for the ball or not………and he was already on yellow, so really Kisel deserved 1 Red and 1 Yellow.

What a story while not on the front page … WOW … and I mean WOW…

Wellington football boom outstrips facilities
Football has become so popular on the back of Phoenix and All Whites success that teams in Wellington have run out of grounds to play on.
Registrations with Wellington’s Capital Football have jumped about 20 per cent over the last five years. Anecdotally, numbers appear to have jumped even higher this year, spokesman Cliff Bowden said.
“Both in seniors and juniors, the sport continues to grow… certainly in Wellington,” he said.
There were more football teams playing in Wellington school competitions than in Auckland, a byproduct of the high profile football success here, Mr Bowden said.
“Certainly here in Wellington you can’t but say the Phoenix has obviously had an awesome impact on the sport,” he said.
“I guess at the moment, football is on a pretty big high in terms of the All White’s [and] the Football Ferns.
“There are a lot of things the kids can look at and go, wow, they want to be like that.”
Mr Bowden said the groundswell of interest in the sport at senior level had reached saturation point, with players now outstripping facilities to play on. Wellington was about seven grounds short.
“We just have a real issue with lack of grounds in the Wellington area to be able to take on many more teams.”
Mr Bowden said there were new clubs trying to enter the competition, and existing clubs bringing on new teams.
While growth in senior player numbers – currently standing at about 4000 players – had been rapid, junior growth had been phenomenal.
While player registration numbers were yet to come in for this season, one club which usually received about 15 new players each year, had this year reported 60.
“We’ve got kids flooding to play the game and so, yeah, we’re rapt that that’s happening.”
“We’d just love to have some more facilities to accommodate them all.”
At last count there were about 9000 registered players in the Wellington area, though Mr Bowden believed that number would be higher this year.
Capital Football was working with the council to get more facilities, including artificial turfs, though expected this to take some time.
In spite of the grounds shortage, Capital Football was over the moon about the growth of the game, Mr Bowden said.

IMO the AFL will suceed in Sydney to what extent I have no idea … the truth we need to take back our own heartland in WS … and get our own act together… we have real problems in north Queensland … Con at Newcastle is a worry… The inbreds (SA) Perth and most other teams are going well… Queensland is a problem… Fold with Fat Cat as their marketing guy is lookig sad…

Normally it is jimbo claiming this sort of nonsence but never backing it up, usually your posts are quite even handed midfielder.
Seriously how can you say you need to take back your heartland, i think in GWS their are tens of thousands of soccer players and at best a couple of thousand people playing Australian football, ….. unbelievable !!.

From what I can tell there are similar issues in Victoria
Hopefully in due course, when we get some better wealth I hope to see the A League kept low cost but spend a lot of the money on infrastruture from backing up A League teams down to the grassroots
In this respect, in NSW and QLD, one wuld think it would make sense for Rugby’s and Football to work together to preserve rectangular oriented grassroots infrastructure
On the game, great game, one gets a bit of a feeling there was a “preference” in a number of quarters for Sydney to go through, given the “outcry” over Mrdjas acquisition which contrasted significantly to that of say Jonas Salley a few years back by Sydney, then the ficturing issue where it is only a few days before MVFC vs Seongnam, but well done to Melbourne, have to say it was a cracking game all the way through from both teams, Melbourne looked to have a much better edge when Archie came though although Sydney had dominated possession, made a difference
Generally I think Strebre is the best Australian referee at the moment, has performed more solidly than Breeze has been. A lot of the calls can come down to linesman calls. Broaque penalty does look a tad soft though if it happened in the centre of the park I can see it get given as a foul sometimes, at first glance I thik Archie was unlucky as well, the replay they showed wasn’t conclusive but Archie did appear to have control of the ball and did seem to get bowled over
Hopefully NQF ort themselves out, the ownership structure they are seeking may be better in the long run. Brisbane have a bit of work to do

Small example local rag on the CC …. AFL has 3 teams on the CC all fairly small… maybe 500 players ..
Football 24 teams 16, 500 players and A-League side…. NRL , 4, 000 players … by far the most viewed TV raing code, plus RL have a semi professional local comp… surf clubs massive memberships and interest….the AFL would have had the back pages about a 20% this year and I cannot recall them ever being in the local paper before…
But if you ask me for the contract … yep I cannot produce it… so just guess work .. that the surf clubs, football & RL & RU all with heaps of history and players loose the back pages to a new sport with 3 teams…

The game yesterday was amazing. Big and tense atmosphere, end to end football it was awesome to watch.
The quality of the goals and pieces of play were of very high standard, it meant so much to both the players and fans, it’s what 2 legged football is all about!
Kruse stuns Sydney with an amazing goal out of nowhere, giving Melbourne the all important away goal. After Melbourne scored it was Sydney dominating for the rest of the first half, and similar in the opening periods of the second half. One issue with Sydney is that even though they have alot of the possesion, they are slow to move the ball and allowed Melbourne to get into position alot of the time.
Once the 2 legs were equal however, at 2-1 (3-3 agreggate), Archie came on and Melbourne had to score which gave them more intent. From then onwards it was mostly Melbourne creating the chances and Clint Bolton made countless match deciding saves. A few one on ones, and that double save in extra time was unbelievable, it was the sort of thing you’d expect from Oliver Khan in 2002.
The only blight on the game was the poor refereeing and linesman calls. Dodgey free kick awarded to Melbourne against Mcflynn at around the 112 minute mark, however you can’t blame Muscat or Archie for the Sydney defence having a power nap during the free kick. The result in the end was justice.

And another major deciding factor was the substitutions. Merrick used all 3, Thompson, Berger, Angulo before the end of 90 minutes. He was aiming to win the match in regular time and or extra time, I’m not sure what Lavicka was doing with his subs, as there is no point saving them for the next game.

There is no doubt that MV had better depth than SFC. Putting on Thompson, Angulo & Berger against tiring SFC players. I was thinking during game as our reserves were warming up. We already have our best 11 on the park & there was not much of a weapon to be used off the bench.

Then when Sydney scored their second goal, all the cups flying around the cove , maniac celebrations from Sydney subs.
At the end of the match victory players go to celebrate with BWB.
Who the hell says the A-league has no passion
I do recall seeing a video of SM vs MV and the BWB looked to be doing a lot more than the( insert group name hear ), so perhaps those sledging s from NSL club supporters( usually SM fans ) aren’t exactly warranted……. i hope you enjoyed my comment.
