An open letter to Jets boss Con Constantine
By jlloyd, 9 Mar 2010 jlloyd is a Roar Rookie
Dear Con, Bad luck about Sunday. Your players (you own them right?) stuck it out til the death and performed admirably, if a little ugly.
You, and it’s all you, can give yourself a pat on the back for the season just completed. Your team has exceeded expectations and then some.
The problems for the Jets in season 09/10 were many.
There was your championship-winning coach, Gary Van Egmond, leaving weeks before season’s kickoff.
You had a marquee player in Fabio Vignaroli who promised much, occasionally delivered, and then busted his knee halfway through the season.
Joel Griffiths, a former (and what you hoped would be future) marquee player acrimoniously split from the club. He even threw in a childish tantrum in refusing to turn up to training which, amazingly, allowed you to claim the moral high-ground.
The Jets’ run of injuries forced supercoach Branko Culina to rely on weekend-scrappers (at best) such as Ben Kennedy and Jobe Wheelhouse.
These are all situations that would be legitimate excuses for not performing as well as the team did, so a few pats on the back to you Con.
The players and particularly the coach probably had something to do with it too – if you’ve got time, see if you can congratulate and thank them.
You could maybe pay them on time as a reward for their efforts – but don’t put yourself out.
Now the off-season starts.
You’re going to lose your captain in Thompson, your creative and unpredictable spark in Song, and probably a few more (Milicevic?, Abbas?, Vignaroli?, Costanzo? Others?).
You’re going to need to replace these quality players.
So this is what we, the loyal fans of Newcastle want you to do: We want an atmosphere at home games. We want people in the street to be talking about Song’s trickery, why Patafta should get more game time, Kennedy’s hair, and Petrovski’s usefulness as a poacher off the bench.
Ask any Novocastrain without one red and one blue eye and they’ll tell you the local sports fan is fickle.
The Knights’ crowds swell when they’re winning, they diminish quickly when they’re not. It’s the same with the Jets.
And there’s no better time to try to claim some Knights’ fans as your own.
This season crowd figures have dropped dramatically.
The A-League officials have said this was a “plateau” season. You’ve said you didn’t want Sunday games, and the stadium reconstruction has played its part.
All good excuses; but if the team wins the city will be struck down with gold-fever like it was in 07-08, and the turnstiles will keep rolling.
And in order to win we need quality recruitment which hasn’t been the club’s strong point in its short history.
We want, and the team needs, a striker that scores.
Jesic will be back and has potential, but it’s yet to be proven he can carry an attack. Basically, we miss Griffiths, but since you two have are on the speaking terms of Wayne Bridge and John Terry, we’ll do with someone similar.
Get out the chequebook, big fella.
With Song going, we’ll need a magician in midfield. Patafta, maybe, can fill this role, but while he is improving, we need more. Abbas played a beautiful through-ball for Elrich to stuff-up on Sunday – if he can do this regularly then he can, along with Patafta, fill the creative void.
Milicevic has been just about your best player all year. He’s as solid as Topor-Stanley, without the glaring mistakes the mop-haired fool often makes. If you lose him, you’ll have a hard time replacing him.
A like-for-like swap may not be necessary – a speedy, skilled defender could help compliment Topor-Stanley’s occasional bumbling, but you will need quality.
You have the formations of a good team. Your coach is one of the best in the A-League in terms of creativity and an attacking, attractive mode of play. You’ve got some good and some solid players.
To win the A-League, and win back the fickle fans of Newcastle, you’ll need one or two great players.
Congratulations on finishing fourth in the season gone, Con. But please, help Culina do better next year.

The people of Newcastle let the Jets down this season, not Con. Every excuse was thrown up for the poor crowds including not winning matches, Newcastle Herald anti-Jets propaganda, the style of play, the stadium and the kick off time. The whole blame it on Con routine has even been absent all year but gets a run now. But at the end of the day the people failed to support their team, winning or losing, rain or shine, short passing or longballs. They just didnt show up.
Given what has happened in North Queensland maybe you should have a think about the sad and tired Con bagging routine. If Con goes, no-one will save the Jets. Don’t delude yourself that the low crowds and lack of a sponsor are simply Con related, and that an invisible saviour lurks around the corner. There are no new takers for the Jets licence. None. No Con = No Jets.
I just think it is just so pathetically patronising for a Jets fan after the poor attendances this season to tell Con to get the cheque book out. Knights motto “Our town, our team”. Jets motto “Get out the chequebook, big fella.”
The A League is going through a bad patch and the Jets are a provincial team that loses money. The talent pool is being drained in Australia so i’m not sure to whom Con is going to write a cheque out to find a “a magician in midfield”, “a speedy, skilled defender” and “one or two great players”.

To be fair when the economy takes a down turn cities like Newcastle take a hit worse than other places.

Yep – great way to go Wayne – Blame the fans.
With that sort of attitude I’m surprised if you think anyone will turn up next season!

Wayne
Beg to differ Con’s management style and lack of loyalty he shows players especially ball smacker and his bro … have not gone down that well at all … Lardel and some other decisions well they make you wonder…
Newcastle is one of the few areas in Australia that football has always enjoyed good local media, generally support from most and respect from RL… broadcast on local ABC radio etc… a very strong football town….
IMO only a WS team offers a better license to potential investors…
Con puts in the money and wants to run everything … in the hands of others Newcastle would have them flooding in..

so true, and look at the transit lounge nature of the squad. Players know better than most the nature of the club, and most leave (not just for financial reasons). Newy has been a football town for decades. The fans are discerning too and are voting on Con with their absence. More power to them, i hope they get the club they deserve soon enough.

As a Melbourne supporter I’d like to say well done jet you had a good season. Beating GCU in the finals surely was a job well done and i think Con cant be blamed for any of the low crowd number and other problems. The jets have a good coach and the youngest starting line up in the league with 5 of its starting 11 under the age of 25. So i think the jets have a lot of good to come there way.
I hope Jets and all franchies in that fact can pull them selves some good crowd numbers next season.
As for the Griffiths saga well it was bad luck for the jets i think Griffiths is a dog for doing what he did, he had a contract and he refused to honer it. I never want him to return to the A-league or the green and gold. Con tryed to stand up for the A-league by demanding what was a fair transfer total of 1 million when the chinese side refused to pay Joel got involved n had a sook beause he’s greedy.

My question is this: Did the club ask the supporters to come? No, not once in the whole season did anyone from the club say “we need you”. Branko said: “I don’t know why they aren’t coming, what more do they expect? There are no excuses, we’ve won 3 in a row.” Con said once: “I hope we get a big crowd. Yes I’m losing a lot of money each week, this has been the worst season ever for that”. Never did they say “We need you”. This is the whole problem. The truth is the Jets admin are acting like they don’t need the people of Newcastle.
Is John Tsatsimas going to get the sack for losing Con another $1m or so? Is someone’s head on the block for chosing Sunday arvo game times? Unlikely.
I think they realised that they made a lot of mistakes in 08/09, and being too proud or gutless to do anything about it, they kept quiet, thinking that people will forget about it and return to watch a winning team.
But the problem is, people don’t forget. And the Jets have reaped the rewards of the poor efforts they have put in to relationships with the community. I’m not going to tell Con what he should or shouldn’t do. He could have a stadium busting at the seams every home game but he and his club reap what they sow. Simple as that.
In respect to the crowds across the board, I have a feeling that all stakeholders (the FFA, clubs, players and supporters) have started to get a bit complacent about our position as a football code. “Plateauing” is a cop out. At the start of the A-League there was a missionary zeal to attract supporters to the game. Lowy begged people to come. You could feel it from every stakeholder. Lately people seem to act as if the game is established. Players, who used to simply to be happy to be earning a living are now appear lazy and complacent toward their local communities. To all of them I say: Your game has not been attracting big crowds for 100 years so you can’t be complacent. You have to keep giving the community more than the other codes and keep doing so. Rugby League and AFL have a community relations platform that is a proven success. Football has to do what the other codes do plus more and never believe that they have “made it”. At least until after the 2022 World Cup.

I agree with you on this. Con is arrogant and pissing off half the Squadron didn’t help. Everyone in Newcastle knows about Con’s heavy hand. Yes, they should do more promotion. And yes they should recruit better. The days when Nicky Carle, Milton Rodriguez and Joel Griffiths played in the team were great – there was a real sense of excitement which isn’t there in this squad, despite the talent that’s there. Con should get a decent marquee if he can afford it. otherwise, well done team, and I hope the fast counter-attack football develops more next season.

losing ljubo wouldnt be the end of the world. i think the statement “He’s as solid as Topor-Stanley, without the glaring mistakes” doesnt do justice to the season topor had, IMO he was head and shoulders above ljubo (especially after the latters weight gain and seeming lack of interest developed as the season ran).
you want a speedy skilled defender? look at kanta. his best games have been playing in a central defensive role. at left back he gets skinned too easily and gets lost in a crowded midfield but he seems solid at centre back.
all in all though, the con hate gets old quick. sure his management style is very “old school” (i.e. my way or fck off) and he doesnt get out the chequebook to sign every international who becomes a free agent (as some bloggers and commenters seem to beleive he should) but he has put a lot of money into the club and does deserve some credit.
p.s. regarding j. griffiths: con gave him the loan deal he wanted, even reduced the asking price when it became clear that griffiths wanted to stay in china, it was only after the chinese messed around with their offer that he stood his ground. con did nothing wrong IMO

Con Constantine is like Robert Chase (Norwich) and Charlie Amer (Middlesbrough), men who mismanaged and asset-stripped their club. His arrogance, poor treatment of fans and players, threatening to throw fans off the balcony, those are things even the worst chairmen I’ve known never did.
Dave said | March 9th 2010 @ 1:23pm | Report comment
Con and the management did ruin the crowd figures. Not many wanted 80% Sunday games and the crowd shoved the decision up Con’s *ss. 30% increase in numbers on fri and sat nights.
Any others who offer fantasy excuses are dullards and should be ignored.

It worrys me all the “”dirty washing” that gets aired in the press, and being in the vicinity of Newcastle I see and hear most.
If I was a player and I had a choice of who would get my services, I would first not want to go to a club where there is so much noise made about players non payments, pitch rentals not paid blah blah blah. Bloody minded Boss who doesn’t pay and doesn’t do anything wrong, blah blah blah.
I personally, see the Jets as a team of misfits with a magician coach. A very unstable club with a very unstable management history in an environment with very unstable sports teams in general. The Knights are borderline with an obvious drug culture and the basketball teams all failed.
It doesn’t matter who did what to whom, this is the perception I have of Newcastle Sports Teams and owners, and I have made this opinion from what I have read in the local papers and media. With support from this media, who needs enemies ????

The biggest mistake the jets made was after con got his hands on The Post Newspaper, after which the club was told not to advertise in the Newcastle Herald, how many times people would ask me what i was up to on the weekend and after i tell them i’m off to see the jets on sunday, there reply 95% of the time was “oh are they playing this week, were at”. It is an issue the aleague is facing aswell, no promotion means no awareness, means no walk-ups to boost the die hard crowd figure.
The only positive is that we have found that the jets have increased there more die hard fan base from 4000 ish to 600ish, but how soon before that starts to drop off with no promotion again next year, very sad for a proud footballing region.

I remember Constantine came out and said that the Jets are at least as big as the Knights. The Knights averaged almost 20,000 last season despite not having such a great year. The Jets averaged less than 7000, yet made the semis (admittedly the finals were 6 teams in a 10 team comp).
Someone mentioned above that the futbol engagement with the community is not as strong as that in NRL/AFL, unfortunately there is a tendency in the futbol community to dish other codes and disregard anything they have.
