Tahs must put Mowen and Horne in starting XV

Chris Hickey has a few selection issues he needs to sort out this week, and a few of them seem pretty clear.
Mumm should be retained at four with Caldwell back into the starting side. Both are quiet agile, and should address the re-start issues from the weekend, which so far this season has kept both the Reds and Sharks in the game.
Mowen should be re-instated at six and should remain there permanently. He had an outstanding game against the Bulls and always makes an impact when he plays. His speed around the field, strong line-out work and link play are key to getting the Tahs on the front foot game in game out.
These changes push Kane Douglas and Dennis out of the starting 15. I can understand retaining Dennis on the bench as he can play second row and six, and is agile, but why keep Douglas in the 22?
Hickey made last weekends changes based on the Sharks style of play and the physicality of it. For anyone that watched the Brumbies versus Lions game, it was clear for all to see that this was not a really physical game. It was open and free flowing. Hickey needs to respond and pick the right squad to counter the Loins style.
There is one change that should be made regardless of opposition and that is Horne moving into 13 permanently. Nothing against Carter, he is a solid 12 and has filled the 13 gap adequately, but on Saturday night you could see he is not accustomed to some of the running lines and lacks the real pace needed to cut that wider channel open.
He provides a brilliant bench option and in the dying 15-20 minutes will provide real forward movement and thrust at 12. If the Waratahs are to really open up their arsenal they need Horne at 13. He is one of the fastest players in Australian rugby (second behind Turner in last years speed testing) and has shown some real sting in defence as well.
Hickey has one of the best squads on paper, but the reality is that he needs to start utilising it otherwise come end of season the Tahs will find themselves out of the finals, down on supporters and looking for a new coach.

Chris, promote yourself to Tahs selector. Good sound reasons for the changes. Carter has been a bottleneck in the backline from what I have seen, but as a bench player definitely offers some direct running at the death when the inside defence may be a bit more brittle.
As for Mowen, I couldn’t undertsand why he wasn’t starting last week anyway when the strategy from the ouset was to play fast to run the Sharks forwards ragged. I know it didn’t work because of an attack of the dropsies but Mowen’s dynamism on the fringes mack up for the lack thereof from Waugh and gives Cliffy someone else to work with.
I am looking forward to a Tahs style similar to that against the Bulls this weekend. Fingers crossed!

Spot on, Horne has greatness written all over him. His defence is second to none and I can’t wait to see what he has to offer in attack. In school boys Horne was the best player by far when they beat the all blacks in 07.
I can’t believe that hickey is getting flogged by the fans for running rugby and he only gives Horne 20 mins of match time. when u have a predigous runner like horne on the bench, u gotta use him don’t u??

Thwey are worried about Horne’s hammy. They want to play him a bit more each week. If you stick him straight in for 80 mins intensity, he could strain it when fatigued.
The problem with this theory is he didn’t play any more on Sat than he did the week before. Make it 15 one week, then 30, then the whole 2nd half etc

Remember Horne is coming back from a hamstring injury – Hickey probably wanted him runnning out game 1.

Yep! Obviously he is perfectly happy with what they delivered.
Otherwise, as coach, you’d reckon changes would be made. But what do we get? Same old, same old.
I hope Hickey’s been working on those restarts because I’d be amazed if the Lions coaching team didn’t exploit that area.

If you cant get the restarts right, how are you going to retain possession. Look how good Van Humphries did it for the REDS last week and he is 45 years old

Baxter has to go, as does Waugh.
Mitchell is useless and Barnes has added nothing.

Obviously the NSW A games count for nothing.
Ratu, (dont know his new name) scored 4 tries. He should replace Mitchell the muppett.
Also give Locky McCaffrey a go, he is the perfect link man for the backs and forwards.

Nashi, I agree. Carterhas been the bottle neck for 3 years. He has got to go!

From what I saw in the lions game last night. I think this article was spot on.
