Sharks coach John Plumtree has added to the criticism of referee Paul Marks by saying the official’s decisions cost his team victory in the Super 14 match against New South Wales last weekend.
Plumtree told the Sharks Website on Tuesday that those “big decisions” were responsible for his team’s fourth defeat in four games this season.
The Sharks lost 25-21 to the Waratahs on Saturday after Marks failed to award the South African team a late penalty try.
Sharks and Springbok captain John Smit said after the game that the Sharks had done enough to win, “… but the scoreboard tells a different story”, an obvious reference to the Sydney-based Marks.
Plumtree also said that bad decisions were part of the game and his team “will carry on fighting”.

Referees can ref their own countries, but not their own state province. So the concensus is, referees are only biased toward their own state / province. Gimme a break! What a load of crap. It’s either all or nothing. I for one am for neutral referees, if indeed the concensus is that referees are indeed human. The plonker from SA in that Lions Chiefs game only confirms the suspicion. Talk about a jersey fixation. You could see with 7 mins to go the Lions were going to get within 7 come hell or high water, aided and abetted by a referee who could only see the errors of one team.
Anyway, either neutral refs or anything goes, nothing in between.

I concur this home ref system is an absolute joke

Marks wasn’t good but he wasn’t as bad as Plumtree is saying, Plumtree wants to keep his job and being 0 for 4 needs a scapegoat. My main criticism was that he missed too many knock-ons and bad passes. Plonkers display for the Bulls vs the Tahs was at least as bad, but didn’t rate a mention because there was no controversy. But it had the same outcome in changing the match result.

Marks wasn’t great, but that worked both ways as always.
The Sharks lost because they had 2 blokes carded, didn’t score enough, and got blown for a penalty in their final lineout. The fact that had gotten away with blocking the same way earlier doesn’t make it any less a penalty.
Beale’s “knock down” IMHO was a fair attempt at an intercept. Had he got it and run away to score (or even just knocked it up and tried to grab it then failed) he would have been a hero. A card was a harsh call.
Plumtree would be better off complaining about the knock on in a ruck Marks missed shortly before on of the tries. We all saw it and were waiting for the whistle, and play continued.
Whinge, whinge whinge. Keep reinforcing those stereotypes, John.

Had the Sharks player passed a nano second earlier, then there would have been no comments. Poor skills…but of course, that reflects on the coach, doesn’t it. The sooner this BS known as a deliberate knock on is dumped, the better. Player skills will improve as a result.

I’m wondering how thse same people would be reacting had the Tahs lost in such controversial circumstances. I remember there was an almighty uproar last year about the make up of the finals from tahs supporters saying it was controversial spitting the dummy. Whilst two different scenarios there are many similarites in the whinging.
Pot Kettle Black are three words that come to mind

When a Kiwi side draws the Bulls and Kaplan is the ref… What colour will that kettle be?
All teams have to adjust to the ref in the middle, it has always been that way. If a coach doesn’t have the ability to do that, his team doesn’t have the ability to do that then they’re handicapped. Plumtree is in a crap place right now and lashing out is clearly exposing his own inadequacies. To be fair Plum has in-house issues far more pressing than deflecting to refereeing. The Sharks have issues, an old hooker playing prop, a young hooker thinking himself bigger than Ben Hurr, a Doctor making a right gynecologist of himself, a 15 almost as old as Percy… the list goes on.

Rememebr the Kiwis were dealt a BS ref last year in Goddard remember him and that farce of a game he officiated in Wellington against the Bulls????
That ref Goddard was subsequently stood down an admission by the SANZAR referes association that he Goddard stuffed up badly.
In this case with marks should he be stood down it will be another situation that he messed up. Both of these incidents the officials calls have directly impacted the scorelines of the matches at hands, by standing them down Lyndon Bray and his croonies are admitting this.
So there will always be question Marks over who rightly won each match and there is no grey area in the middle you either believe the Tahs deserved to win or you don’t.
Luckily for the Tahs it is in there favour this time lets see what happens should the tables be turned

If you read most of the comments you’d realise it would’nt matter, they would still get canned, most Tah supporters here have been discussing the poor performance from the team rather than the result.

I have read nearly all the comments son and it is very clear that most people are clearly sitting on eitherside of the fence. I’d say there is a rather even split on the final decision of the game which could have swung the tide in either teams favour. What i am finding absurd now is those same people telloing the Shark supporters and Plumtree to get over it they have bigger things to deal with are the same people who were crying foul come finals last year because they missed out.
Rather ironic don’t you think

I’m sitting on the side of rugby, SON and I don’t recall the Waratah’s finals chance’s hinged on a ref’s decision, but if you care to elaborate, be my guest
Ben J said | March 10th 2010 @ 10:23pm | Report comment
Stop calling people SON, it is unbecoming someone that is supposedly on the side of rugby . Marks is in hot water because his peers think so and he should be stood down, not because he is Australian but because he made a right royal hash at a important stage of a very close game. Let’s not forget that a SA ref is also on the red carpet, let’s give the peer reiew process a fair chance.
Ora said | March 11th 2010 @ 5:17am | Report comment
Do tell me where I said Marks was in trouble because he was Australian come on do tell me.
Also show me where I said the Tahs missed out on the final because of a Refs call I’m dying to know.
I think if you actually read the comments like you demand I do you will find I said the following.
“. I remember there was an almighty uproar last year about the make up of the finals from tahs supporters saying it was controversial spitting the dummy. Whilst two different scenarios there are many similarites in the whinging.”
Don’t let the truth cloud your judgment though
Onceinawhile said | March 11th 2010 @ 7:35am | Report comment
The article is about referee decsions, I incorrectly assumed your comment would be relevant, I apologise.
I’m still curious as to what was in your words ” controversial “. it wasn’t a ref mistake, what was it? That’s all I’m asking Ora, what exactly are you refering to?
I wasn’t on this site last year so I can’t be in your group of Tah supporters “spitting the dummy”, but if I find them I’ll be sure to let them know your feelings

Well Marks has form for bottling the big decisions .. ask the Hurricanes …. to me he certainly was a hometown ref last saturday and cost the sharks the result …
Kupu should have been marched also from the first lineout after the Beale incident – another blatant professional foul right in front of Marks .. yes he blew another penalty – but the result was a maul 5-10m out was stopped before it could get going … Marks shouldn’t be allowed back into S14 – club rugby is about his level

Penalty try from 40m out with a cover defender coming across??? Ridiculous.
