Who should play for the Rebels in the Super 15?

Some of you may remember an article I wrote regarding who should play for the Melbourne Rebels. Perhaps I should have called them the “Victorian Rebels”, but that is a different discussion the administrators will have to sort out amongst themselves.
The article created some enjoyable debate. Some people said the theoretical squad I named would be hopeless; others suggested other names that would be interesting.
Since then rumours about signings have been aplenty. Some have been great to hear about, others haven’t. I’m sure people’s opinions on this differ greatly. However, no rugby fan can say that reading about it hasn’t been damn interesting.
Basically, this article details what playing personal I think the Rebels should be made up of. I would love to hear what the learned people of The Roar have to say on the subject and would be keen to discuss my choices, but I digress.
If I picked the Rebels squad it would look something like this:
Loosehead Props: Jack Kennedy, James Slipper, John Uglia (Victorian/Hooking cover).
Tighthead Props: Rodney Blake, Juan Pablo Orlandi (Argentina).
Hookers: Adam Frier, Ole Avei (Victorian).
Locks: Pat O’Connor, Dylan Sigg, Chris Thompson, Sitaleki Timani (Blind-side cover).
Open-Side Flankers: Julian Salvi, Pat McCutcheon.
Blind-Side Flankers: Rocky Elsom.
Number 8s: Tamati Horua (Victorian/Blind-side cover), Gareth Delve (Welsh).
Scrum-Halves: Richard Kingi , Agustin Figuerola (Argentina), James Stannard.
Fly-Halves: Daniel Halangahu, Mike Hercus (American).
Inside Centres: Lloyd Johansson (Victorian), Christian Lealiifano (Victorian/Fullback cover), Ben Tapuai (Victorian).
Outside Centres: Mark Gasnier, Stirling Mortlock, Rex Tapuai (Victorian).
Wings: Peter Betham, Matt King (Ex-Storm), Lepani Nabuliwaqa (Fijian).
Fullback: Danny Cipriani (English).
Most of these signings speak for themselves. No other Australian franchise is too plundered and there are as many Victorians that meet Super 14 standard as possible, not to mention the fact the franchise has many interesting internationals, but not too many (we need to develop Australian talent).
The only name that may take people by surprise is Matt King. Matt is a terrific league player who could not only be a bustling attacker and defender, but would also turn the cross-kick into a prime weapon in the Rebels’ arsenal. On top of this he would allow the Rebels to connect to the Storm’s fans without poaching any of their players. It’s a win-win.
In addition to the squad, I would hope there is a “Tier 1” academy-type structure. This is the manner the Western Force has chosen to structure their squad. Tier 1 players are full-time and fully professional but can’t expect as much game time as full squad members.
The main difference I would hope for is that all Tier 1 squad members would be Victorian players. This would ensure the side becomes as Victorian as possible in years to come.
Some names that come to mind for this squad are the 2009 Australian Schoolboys: Rodney Esekia (Flyhalf/Center), Angus Hamilton (Lock), Jack De Guingand (Open-side Flanker), Nathan Palia (Number 8); current Australian 7s player Talelei Grey (Number 8); or even the more dominant Victorian grade players like Tim Finau (Winger/Fullback).
There are a lot of options and this kind of academy set-up would be great for Victorian Rugby. Obviously there would be other levels set-up to allow other Victorians, that mightn’t quite be there yet, opportunities with the team.
Last but certainly not least, the 22. If I named a Rebels 22, based on the squad I listed, it would look a little like this:
1. Jack Kennedy
2. Adam Frier
3. Juan Pablo Orlandi
4. Pat O’Connor
5. Sitaleki Timani (Covering 6)
6. Rocky Elsom (Captain)
7. Julian Salvi
8. Gareth Delve
9. Richard Kingi
10. Daniel Halangahu
11. Peter Betham
12. Christian Lealiifano (Covering 15)
13. Mark Gasnier
14. Stirling Mortlock (Vice-Captain/Covering 13)
15. Danny Cipriani (Covering 10)
Reserves:
16. John Uglia
17. Rodney Blake
18. Chris Thompson
19. Timati Horua
20. Agustin Figuerola
21. Ben Tapuai
22. Matt King
So, what do you think? For me, as a Melbournian, this would be a dream come true.

What about Chris Siale? He never really got a crack with the Waratahs and then got injured pretty early with the Reds. He can cover 12,13 and 14. Anyone know where he is playing now?
Scott Fardy would also be well worth a look and being a Warringah boy I wouldn’t be surprised if McQueen has been in touch with him . He was joint winner of the Ken Catchpole medal in 2008 despite only playing half the season.

Siale and Fardy would both be good for the Rebels. Also Eastwood captain Hugh Perrett

I get confused with Siale boys – One brother is in France (I think Chris) & the other brother Lupeni is at Manly.

That team wouldnt win a Super 15 game with those locks. Sita cant get a run at the Brumbies, even on the bench and Pat Oconnor got the axe from the Force and was very average playing for the Rats last year in Shute Shield.
Backrow is very impressive but if they are going for good culture and knocking back Lipman do you think ARU would let them sign Delve. Isnt he the Welsh 8 that just got done pissed as stealing a golf cart????

Sita is a terrific player that just needs a good coach to help him shine. He has done nothing but impress me at S14 level.
Pat OConnor left the Force due to being an injury liability and is working hard to fix himself up to give it another shot.
No, the golf cart was not Delve.

Nick, i see this morning Tahs have retained Hangas. Rebels must be devestated missing out on Barnes and now Hangas.
Will they go for Quade Cooper now or even Jimmy Hilgendorf ?????

I still have my hopes for James but as you can see he isn’t in the team list above so I’m not counting on it.
Is Beale off contract? I know Toomua is. If worse comes to worse Cips plays 5/8 and they find a new 15.

What about Sonny Bill Williams? Snatch him up before the kiwis can.. Once he grasps the technicality of Rugby Union he will be a sort after player. We all know how dominant he is physically. I’d like to see Rex Tapuai in that team, he did wonders for the Axemen last year and i’ve always wondered why he isn’t already signed with the super 14.

Rockin – you’re thinking of Andy Powell.
AndyS – I think Brock James has played 7′s for Aus in the past so can’t represent France even though he’s met residency requirements and is the best 10 in top 14.
cheers

Matt Toomua was born in Melbourne although he moved to Queensland and played in Brisbane/Logan since Junior HIgh at least. It’s a pity he seemed to indicate he would stay at he Brumbies as he would be perfect at 10 with Lealiifano at 12 and possibly Mortlock at 13. They would obviously have had a lot of playing and training experience together.
If they got both Mortlock and Gasnier it would be a bit of a pity to have Gasnier just on the wing and Mortlock is obviously best at 13. You’d wonder if Gasnier saw on Monday that Mortlock had signed with the storm that he might even look at the Brumbies where he could have a go at 13 or 15 depending on where they thought Ashley-Cooper should go.

The only reason I would see Toomua staying at the Brumbies is if Gits has somehow let out of the bag he will be gone after the RWC. Surely Toomua can see he wont otherwise get to play much footy, especially at 10 at the Brumbies while Gits is there? Unless Lealifano has signed with the Rebels???

I am inclined to agree with you.
Toomua has said that he isn’t interested in playing 12 though. So, even if Lealiifano is willing to move, its not really solving Toomua’s problem (since Gits tends to be a bit of a primadonna).
The rumors circulating indicates that Gits is off after this RWC. Which may be why Toomua wants to stay, but if you ask me, he’d be better off down in Melbourne, profiting from the brains trust there

If Gasnier wants to becomes a Wallaby 13 he should play a year with Mortlock. He could learn alot.
Obviously Mortlock isn’t the player he used to be but he still understands the game, thus the one at 13/one of the wing theory. They can line up wherever the play sees fit.

I got all excited, BEN KAY!!! But not, Ben Kaye is not Ben Kay.
It says he is a hooker. League Hooker (probably a union half-back) or union hooker?

I don’t think London Irish would be too upset were Hewat to return home at any point in the near future. I’m not sure how long he is contracted for, however.

Hi
The pattern that has emeregd in all the signing that Rebels (or more accuratelly Macqueen’s recruitment policy) appears to be focused on rejected highly talented players (Cipriani, Lipman, even Delve as well as most of the Brumbies 1996), so it seems to me that quite a few players from your wishlists could be safely ignored. Mortlock, actually does not fit the pattern, and I am sure there will be few players like that, as you could never discount the attraction to work with coach of such a reputation (and results) as well as being a part of the new club and becoming a foundation memeber. Macqueen is highly regarded as coach with very strong people skills more than his actual rugby caching ability. Saying that, off course, I do not believe that he would get such results wihout those skills either.
So IMO Beau Robinson and even Brock James will always look more likely signings than Tyrone Smith or Mark Gasnier.
Kind regards
KF

But Brock James is safely entrenched in the bosom of one of the world’s biggest and richest clubs, KF – as is Gasnier. Conversely, Smith is playing back-up following a breakthrough season.

I would say Tyrone would fall under the rejected banner.
When the Brumbies were created only the 60 best Aussie players were employed in Australia. There is now double that amount. There aren’t as many quality players lying around underused.
I see your point though.
