New Test tourist Steven Smith says words probably wouldn’t be adequate to explain achieving a childhood dream if he gets the chance to strut the five-day stage in New Zealand.
Smith celebrated his selection for the two-Test tour across the Tasman by clouting a typically belligerent unbeaten 72 for NSW on the first day of their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the SCG.
The hard hitting middle order batsman and emerging legspinner boosted his first-class run tally for the season to 715 at an average of 79.44.
Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Smith’s inclusion added versatility to the squad as he could bat in the top six and would give captain Ricky Ponting the chance to play two spinners.
He is likely to vie with out of form Marcus North for the No.6 spot in the order, but Smith said he hadn’t had enough time to build up any expectations of his prospects.
Smith, who has played five T20 internationals and a single limited overs international, said he was a little bit surprised by his Test call up.
“I heard a little bit of talking about being involved in the squad and that sort of thing and to get a chance, it’s something something I’ve always dreamed of doing, playing Test cricket,” Smith told reporters after stumps at the SCG.
“If I get a chance to do that, words probably can’t explain how I’m going to feel, but it’s pretty amazing and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Asked where he had heard talk of hs Test prospects Smith said “just a few of the (NSW) boys just chirping in occasionally, just little remarks and that sort of thing.”
Although he was informed of his selection on Monday night, Smith said he couldn’t tell anyone till after the squad was announced and it hadn’t proven a distraction while batting.
“I wasn’t thinking about it, just going out and taking each ball as it came. I’m pretty excited now that the day is over and I can get it into me,” Smith said.
He anticipated blending into the Test squad without any problems given his familiarity with several members of the team.
” A lot of the guys in the Twenty20 squad that I’ve played a couple of games with now are involved in the Test squad,” Smith said.
“All the guys are a good bunch and they are always really welcoming to newcomers, so I’m sure I’m not going to have a problem fitting in down there.”
