Holden driver Garth Tander admits winning this year’s V8 Supercar championship will take a lot of work, but he has given himself some chance of consoling himself with a $2 million windfall.
Tander’s win in the opening race of the Clipsal 500 on Saturday puts him in pole position for the rich prize being offered to any driver who can win the sport’s newly-created Grand Slam.
A $2 million cash bonus is on offer for any driver who can win the Clipsal 500, Bathurst 1000, Gold Coast SuperCarnivale and Sydney street race in the same season.
A good finish in Sunday’s second 250km race around the Adelaide street circuit could be enough to win him the event and put him in line for this year’s prize.
The Holden Racing Team driver admitted to much soul-searching after a crash-riddled start to the year in the Middle East which left him 22nd in the points standings going into Adelaide.
He now climbs to 15th after his Saturday win, breathing some life into his hopes of clambering back into title contention.
“We know that from a championship point of view we’ve got to battle on and we know it will be a long way into the year before we’re in the mix,” Tander said.
“Results like that will certainly keep the momentum going and the motivation up.
“We need to be careful that we don’t forget about the championship altogether but it’s certainly not our main focus at the minute.
“It’s probably only 20 per cent of our focus at the moment, it’s important to win a lot of races and that’s the best way to get us back in the championship.”

It was great to see Tander finally have a clean race for the season and show off his true driving talent. Tander is as smooth and professional as they come and, if it weren’t for technical mishaps and some less professional drivers, he would definitely be right alongside Whincup and the championship would be as exciting as ever. Whincup has driven well, but he must have done something amazing to get the karma he’s had and it’s a shame that we can’t see the two go head to head on even points. For the sake of the sport a few more Whincup bashings could go a long way.

Agreed. It’s great we have a championship battle. After the Middle East rounds it seemed Whincup would walk the championship.
