Michael Clarke is due to arrive back in New Zealand to rejoin the Australian cricket squad on Monday, with teammate Mike Hussey saying he hopes the Black Caps respect the vice-captain’s privacy.
Clarke walked out on a five-match one-day international series after two games to rush home to Sydney to sort out his relationship with model Lara Bingle.
The 28-year-old announced on Friday that his engagement with Bingle was off.
He’s expected to take his place in the team for Friday’s first Test against the Black Caps in Wellington, with Ricky Ponting’s side resuming training at the Basin Reserve on Tuesday.
“I think it is a personal issue and it’s probably going a little bit too far if they do mention anything about that,” Hussey said.
“I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see really.
“He’s such a mentally tough person. He’ll be fine.
“It’s important we don’t get caught up in that by-play.”
Hussey says his team-mates have spent little time discussing Clarke’s personal dramas.
“We want him back as quickly as possible because he is an integral part of our team and a very fine player,” Hussey said.
“We want him back and a hundred per cent focused on playing well for Australia.
“Hopefully he can get through his issues as quickly as possible and we can have him back.
“But as a group we haven’t really spoken about it much at all. We’ve just tried to focus on the job of playing for Australia and we’ll let him deal with all his issues off the field.”
Australia lost to New Zealand by 51 runs in Saturday night’s fifth ODI clash but the tourists retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with a three-two series win.

And if the shoe were on the other foot what chances of Australia not sledging?
Can’t have it both ways boys.

Spot on Warren. The Aussies would go for the jugular if the shoe was on the other foot.

I hope the kiwis get stuck into clarke relentlessly.

Well the answer reasonably simple “Mr Cricket” get the Aussie team to bite the bullet and stop sledging during games … otherwise reap what you sow … the hypocrisy in this call is astounding

Do the Aussies resort to that sort of personal sledging?
Did they ever, for example, sledge Trescothick for his homesickness issue? I don’t think so.
As for the crowds – there is nothing surer than that they will use it all as fodder. Clarke will just have to not take himself too seriously and suck it up, then deliver on the pitch.
Can he do it? We’ll see.

I would hope the New Zealanders pursue him relentlessly – there’s no doubt the Australians would.
Perhaps it will remind him what his real job is, what he gets paid for and how much more tough minded he needs to be to succeed.
I have grave doubts about his maturity, at 28 now, for getting himself into his mess, and prolonging the return to a semblance of sound judgement.
There’s no accounting for poor taste.

Mick, one of the better comments I’ve seen for a while. Most of us are reminded of our work duties on the way out after having failed them…
One positive though, my 12 yr old daughter said to me “at least he flew back here to break it off and didn’t do it over the phone”. Don’t quite know if that’s a compliment or an idictment on the way we do things now.

Very interesting comments from Chris Martin, the NZ seamer. He said Clarke won’t cop anything from the players, because as Clarke always treats the others with dignity, they will do the same to him. That’s how it works apparently. So Clarkey is well liked by opponents. The crowd, as martin conceded, might be a little more vocal…
