Reds hope to repel southern raider

Queensland must hope a record victory and their best Super rugby start in a decade changes the mind of Melbourne-bound Reds prop Laurie Weeks.
Rebels officials are confident the rising 23-year-old is one of six players the expansion Super 15 franchise will announce as their first Australian-based signings this week.
Tight-head Weeks, lock Adam Byrnes and reserve half Richard Kingi are three Queenslanders expected to leave Ballymore.
While the Reds could cope with Byrnes and Kingi jumping ship, Weeks has emerged as a potential Wallabies front-rower under former Test prop Ewen McKenzie.
Weeks refused media requests after Sunday night’s 50-10 thrashing of the Western Force at Suncorp Stadium which has the Reds one competition point outside the top four.
McKenzie has been frustrated the Rebels’ recruitment missions have been a distraction to his players but is also backing the Reds’ recruitment strategies.
“I’m quietly confident we’ve done the work necessary,” he said. “Does it mean we keep everyone? Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see what happens.
“Now we’re in a bye week so it will all be very interesting and exciting for the Rebels but we’ll keep on with the business of playing and I’ve done a lot of work in terms of the future Reds but it’s just a distraction to talk about at the moment.”
But McKenzie knows a win of the magnitude of the seven-try stomping of the Force will ward off a raid like that suffered in 2005 by the Force.
“If you keep producing and playing in a team that’s showing great spirit and aptitude and more consistency that would be something as a a professional footballer you would be attracted to,” he said.
Two-try flanker Scott Higginbotham admitted the Rebels entry into the player market had been a distraction but declared his allegiances to the Reds.
“I love playing for Queensland and I want to keep playing for Queensland,” he said on Sunday night.
“I want to stay in Queensland.
“There’s a lot of pride and a lot of passion in the team this year so hopefully all the boys feel the same as I do.”
The best retention plans for Queensland revolve around the fact team leaders James Horwill and Will Genia are signed on for 2010, as well as strike weapon Digby Ioane, while playmaker Quade Cooper has indicated he wants to stay.
Genia lauded the ruthlessness of the young side against the Force by setting the tone early and putting on five tries by halftime.
“It’s an outstanding effort by the boys, I think more so because we showed a lot of character,” he said. “When we had the foot on the throat we kept going.”

What a wonderful distraction from playing Rugby this must be. Thank you ARU for sabotaging the Reds once again.

Perhaps the Reds shouldnt have let 22 players be off contract all at once? It’s not like the 15th team hasnt been in the pipeline for a while
Chris said | March 15th 2010 @ 8:13am | Report comment
Exactly – the Brumbies and Tah’s made sure most of their players had contracts ending in 2011.

God I hope Weekes doesn’t go the rebels – he’s fantastic !

Greg Martin made similarly Red-tinted comments last night FOS, and at the risk of giving anything Phil Kearns says on Fox Sports any credibility by quoting him, “how else are the Rebels supposed to sign players?”

Who cares? I did not want a 5th team, and I would much rather a lasting Qld renaissance than a repeat of 2005. Anyway, doesn’t NSW produce all these Super players (but still have to poach Barnes and Mitchell etc) so isn’t the theory that NSW club players should be stepping up? Or did the ARU not think this through, again?

But Laurie Weeks IS a Sydney Club player – or at least he was until he was lured north by the Reds! what’s good for the goose…

Was a club player. Has now had two years of professional rugby under his belt. I don’t recall him having a S14 contract – or even Academy – prior to the Reds taking a chance.
But you are right, in that its foolish for the Reds to recruit from outside Queensland. We have more than enough real talent here, if only we can keep it.

Weeks and Byrnes were in the Waratahs Academy in 08

Bugger, I knew Byrnes was ex-Academy, but was unaware Weeks was: I know he was one of the top props going around in clubland, but that was it.

What can the Rebels possibly offer that Queensland cannot? If you’re going for the money, McQueen says he doesn’t want you. If it is the culture and the vibrancy of a new team that you want, then Queensland is the place to be. Make your announcement early so that you can dropped to the reserves bench and we can start blooding for next year. By the way, which team do you think Nathan Sharpe and James O’Connor really wanted to be after 20 minutes of yesterday’s game. That will be you next year, loser.

If they sign, drop them from the team. That sends a message, and cruels hopes for Wallaby selection for those that have it.

Thats a good point formeropenside, but i wouldnt be dropping Cooper now as you are still a chance to make the finals this year

Amen TORF – build it (ie exciting winning culture) and they will stay. It’s frigging cold, dark and miserable in Melbourne too !
The players who remain should make it their mission to make those who deserted Queensland pay. Higginbotham has the right attitude. Queenslander !

I think what Link is building will survive the loss of Weeks, Byrne and Kingi. Even Hynes. Weeks isn’t from QLD and is best mates with the Rebels assistant coach. So that is no surprise. And its hard to blame Kingi for wanting to move out from behind Will G. On present form Will could be the starting 9 for some time to come.
I’m confident that we can manage this. Rob Simmons did quite well at lock yesterday. And we would normally have Horwill playing at lock also. So next year we could have Horwill, Van and Simmons. Hell we might even be in a posistion to attract players!
formeropenside said | March 15th 2010 @ 9:09am | Report comment
I think Van will be 93 next season, so it could be a bridge too far if he picks up a serious injury this year. Still, as long as he is playing well I dont care how old he is.
reds fan said | March 15th 2010 @ 9:19am | Report comment
exactly. there has been a few years where he didnt tackle alot, so he must have a bit more in the tank compared to other locks his age.

Laurie Weeks would be a loss – but then I also thought that when Berrick Barnes left …
Regarding Rob Simmons – a solid off season will see him just that little bit bigger and stronger – and will then see him really start to make an impact.
The person I would really like to reatain at the moment though is Luke Morahan.
As for attracting players to the Reds – be nice if one of them was good enough to get in the first fifteen – what has happenned to Lei Tomeki? Lets first try an keep what we have… and dare I say it – even the Faiingai brothers

The best thing for rugby in Australia would be if the ARU moved to have both Martin and Kearns removed from Foxsports as both are negative and have nothing positive to say about Super 14. They do no homework on the game or on the players and talk rubbish, the S A and New Zealander commentators are fair and possitive in all their broadcasts, i have just cancelled my Foxsports subscription

weeks what a fantastic signing he’ll have the crowds pouring in the doors? byrnes? kingi? Frier -when not injured? Cordingley? seriously another not so super team in Australia?
Gary Russell-Sharam said | March 15th 2010 @ 3:08pm | Report comment
The players that are mooted to be moving to the Rebels from the Reds are going to go no matter what anyone says or does. As one Roarer said “He thought we would be in trouble when we lost Barnes”. If we loose players we loose them, we have the finest breeding ground for Rugby players in Australia as proven by all the Qld players playing in the Super 14 and around the world. We just need to look to our own and make it attractive to stay here. Link seems to have the right culture growing within the team, so I don’t think there should be too many alarm bells ringing. What will be, will be, if a few move south there will be more room for the up-and-commers to get into the Reds.
