A-League grand finalists Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC have had their successful seasons reflected in the players’ team of the season.
The Victory have four members of the 16-man squad, including skipper Kevin Muscat being named captain, while the Sky Blues have three, including their retired leader Steve Corica.
The Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) team was voted on by every A-League player.
Victory’s other inclusions were Johnny Warren Medallist Carlos Hernandez, striker Archie Thompson and sidelined defender Matthew Kemp.
Sydney had defender Simon Colosimo and striker Alex Brosque.
PFA chief executive Brendan Schwab said the players clearly valued experience, given the wealth of Socceroos’ caps shared by the team members.
“Danny Vukovic, who’s played 22 junior internationals for Australia, is the only uncapped player in the squad, there’s some 272 caps in total among the squad,” he said.
North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory were the only clubs not represented.
Schwab said there were no plans for the team to play a match, but hoped that in the future an annual promotional game could be organised, possibly to open the season.
“To see them on a field of play at any time, provided they’re at full strength against meaningful opposition would be a great promotion for football in this country,” he said.

kemp? really? i know the modern wing back is more athlete than defender but surely to make the team of the season as a defender requires an ability to tackle?

Ifill on the bench?

No way Brosque should get a start over Ifill.
