Sydney win? Nah, A-League needs a Melbourne win

I can see it now, when the microphones are turned off, perhaps many in the Sydney-based football media will be kicking every ball as it passes from the feet of the likes of Kisel, Bridge and Brosque hoping for a Sydney win.
And just as Mike Tuckerman’s article suggests, perhaps the FFA are as well – Frank Lowy may even bring out his Sydney FC cap again!
After all, Sydney is the biggest “market”, albeit a fickle one. And as Les decried recently on the World Game website, the Sydney media don’t do the A League or its beloved “bling FC” proper justice.
Sydney supposedly need to win for the good of the league, simply because Kevin Muscat has already held aloft the “toilet seat” a few times already.
Unfortunately, despite the fixture advantage of playing the second leg at home and the “whingeing” Melbourne having to contend with playing an ACL match two days later, and being without “controversial” signing Nick Mrdja, the Sydney football media and market were “robbed” of the chance of a home Grand Final.
Now we have to put up with the substandard and spongy Docklands pitch.
But whereas there is an argument that Sydney FC should win so that the more “cultured” and sophisticated continental style of Viteslav Lavicka is taken more seriously, one can argue that this has been achieved with a Premiership win.
There is also the equally legitimate argument that the continued Trophy success of Melbourne Victory is important for the A League so that the progressive and high quality off-field administrative and governance structure is taken seriously.
It is the same structure that sees Melbourne with the leading edge in recruitment, with a Grand Final victory vindication for taking the calculated risk of forking out a transfer fee on Hernandez, and recruiting players from central America and South East Asia – facilitating integration with the South East Asian sub region of the AFC.
Then there is the “brand” of the A League.
One can argue that synonomous with the “league” brand, there is a consistently successful and well run club that fans can immediately identify with when they think of the league.
While there where forces that wanted “Bling FC” to automatically have this stature, merely because “they are from Sydney”, Adelaide did well for themselves with their run to the Asian Champions League final; while Melbourne are in the process of staking their claim as Australia’s instantly recognisable powerhouse club.
I can’t help but feel that a Melbourne win would be good for the A League in the long run, as the A League struggles to credibly assert itself in the Asian and international football scene.
Melbourne’s crowds have dropped, but their membership base rose on season 4 levels and currently stand at about 20,000. Melbourne’s crowds have propped up the dive in attendances at other clubs and lifted the overall A League attendance to vague respectability.
With the “Melbourne market” becoming a two team city from next season, the A League needs as many Melburnians interested in the A League as possible to avoid the controversies and problems with this seasons expansion “franchises” Gold Coast and North Queensland.

Well put, Victory have been ‘getting it right’ longer than SFC and have earned continued silverware, assuming they can do it on the day. And Sydney already have the league…

I see nothing but lies in this article. It’s practically defamatory.
Lies, damn lies and whatever MVFC fans say.

Well said.. logic and comon sense always prevail..
i guess i kind of understand.. Majority of Football media comes from Sydney and they just can’t understand why football isn’t big in their city.. so they have to resort to “for the benefit of the A-league” line..
Well judging by the first seasons GF win and recently finsihing the season on top.. not even a Premership or Championship win can save Sydney FC’s soul..
Maybe Rovers can bring some passion to NSW football..

Back from holiday in time for the big game.
All I can say is in regards to this piece is NUFCMVFC 1 – Tuckerman 0
Just like what the score will be on Saturday night
Ah.. Melbourne the beating heart of football in Australia.
You can imagine what it will be like next season when we have 2 teams in the A-League.
The Sydney football media will be insufferable

It’s a great post and I’m happy to see such an articulate rebuttal of some of my thoughts.
Just imagine if Strebre sends off Archie for an errant elbow early on. That would really kick off some debate about what FFA ‘wants!’

“What” an “interesting” post. “I’m” sure “that” whoever “wins” it “will” be “a” great “game” to “watch.”

Sydney is more important without a doubt. Why? Because Sydney is the biggest & most powerful market in Australia if you want to attract sponsors & finance to the A-League. Also the next TV deal will be much less than it could have been if SFC & Rovers cant penetrate their market more.
MV or MH,no matter how succesful, will not cut the mustard in attracting the moolah to the A-League in comparison to getting the Sydney market right.
Tom said | March 17th 2010 @ 9:16am | Report comment
Maybe.
But they haven’t got it right. At least not consistently.
So it would be a shame if they were to do the double now. What does that leave for the future?

I don’t think a GF win would instantly grant all those things though.
They have qualified for the ACL so if one of the chapters in the SFC story is Corrica and Aloisi watching a heartbreaking GF day loss from the stands it just adds more color to the story… and gives the fans something to crave for next yeare REVENGE.

Tow
Mate great insight… the Rovers are the most important team the A-League has and I actually think they can change sports media in Australia if they reach even close to their potential… WS home to eight former NSL clubs, five associations, close to 100, 000 registered winter players, in parts of WS it is Football nothing else… But very divided and very knowledge especially in South Western Sydney… but if a team could ever unite these various tribes it will become the biggest team in Australia in every aspect, crowds, sponsors etc…
I guess if you come from Melbourne this may be hard to understand but in WS and SWS in particular football player numbers are greater than RL, RU, Hockey, combined times 4… RL may claim WS as it has four clubs and 20, 000 players and this is true but Football has far more following… trouble is it very divided…

If melbourne heart end up being half as popular as the victory, then i’ll show which will be the biggest derby in the
a-league. i don’t buy all this sydney has the moolah business. the biggest dollars in terms of sponsorships and corporate
support for any sport is for the AFL and that is based right here melbourne. melbournes population is only 500k behind sydney and closing. we all know victorians (and south australians to an extent) are far far more passionate about sport then NSWelshmen.

Well you deseved the right to reply as I believe their is a few pro Sydney articles floating around, (their is one on the Punch too)
I don’t think the A league needs any team to win though, other than hopefully the best team on the day.
“There is also the equally legitimate argument that the continued Trophy success of Melbourne Victory is important for the A League so that the progressive and high quality off-field administrative and governance structure is taken seriously.”
I thought that was a nice point
Tom said | March 17th 2010 @ 9:20am | Report comment
Agreed.
What the A-league really needs is the best run teams to win trophies, regardless of where they’re from.
Which is why it wouldn’t have been such a bad thing for Australia if Wellington had won it.

What is really interesting—the main game will be the curtain raiser—GCU FC vs Perth Glory FC. So for the good of the A-League let’s hope that the GCU FC win the National Youth League Grand Final..
Now that Chelsea are out of the UCL—suddenly all eyes are now focused on what will happen on Saturday night; so let’s all get behind GCU and SFC for the good of the A-League, remembering these fixtures are going global.
