Four good reasons to sign for the Rebels

Headlines have read that Waratahs prop Dan Palmer is heading to the Brumbies next season due to “the teams’ direction” and “regular game time” as he sits behind Baxter, Robinson and Kepu.
I might be over-simplifying this, but looking at the Brumbies, they have Alexander (who, if fit, will always start), Ma’afu and Sheperdson on the bench as cover.
It looks like the set up and Palmer’s position in the pecking order will probably not change much between NSW and ACT.
So the question begs: why not the Rebels?
I grew up in Sydney and Brisbane, finished Uni, and played club rugby in Brisbane with a stack of current Super 14 and Wallaby players.
I lived in Melbourne from the age of 27-30 and moved to Sydney in the last 12 months due to work. Melbourne has massive appeal and hopefully a few young blokes, who are considering the move, get a chance to read this as it really does offer nothing but positives.
1. Rugby has a very strong following in Melbourne and the Rebels will have a very strong fan base.
I caught up with a current Wallaby last year whilst he was in town for the weekend and he was swamped by people in the College Lawn pub wanting to chat to him and buy him a beer.
There is a strong population of ex-Brisbane and WA people in Melbourne who love their rugby, and anyone who has been to a Weary Dunlop lunch will know what I am talking about.
2. Players will be able to stay largely out of the spotlight as the AFL will – always – dominate the headlines and sporting pages. So the players will be able to go about their business and focus on their football. I think some of the Tahs would appreciate this!
3. World cup winning coach Rod McQueen. When McQueen took over the Wallabies, it was a pretty dark time for Australian rugby. The Kiwis really had us well and truly covered. Within 24 months we lifted ‘Bill’ and went on to win the Tri-Nations, Bledisloe and Lions.
4. For up-and-coming players who are looking for game time, like Palmer, they will get a real chance to regularly get on the pitch.

its going to be the best atmosphere at a Rugby ground in Aust with the new stadium!!

Agreed, though I’ve always thought “watching” the rugger at College Lawn involves little to no actual rugby watching.
Let’s not forget Melbourne’s huge islander population, they have and will continue to be a huge part of the Melbourne rugby community.

Nick P,
Absolutely correct regarding “CLAWN”. You need something to get you off the couch at home though!
You only need to go to a trial match like the one between the Saders and Force two years back and see the strong turn out of rugby fans, especially our Islander counterparts.
I had a look at the new stadium the other day and it is looking absolutely fantastic.

I think the answer to your question about Palmer is that Shep is looking overseas and will leave the Brumbies. Just a rumour, but makes sense.

Shep has been dropped from the team this wekend v Auckland.
He will probably go to Melbourne. This is a mistake on the Brumbies part. he is a fine player and a Canberra Grammar product to boot.

“Tribalism in elite sport is dead!”
And the ARU is killing it deliberately.

I would have thought it was more the players. I am sure there would be nothing the ARU would like more than if everyone preferred to stay put, especially in the face of money from Europe – it would keep the wages bill down.

Rebels have Weekes and are trying to get the du Plessis brothers. It wasn’t so good for him down there either. What’s happened to Shepherdson is a clear indication Palmer will be no. 2 THP next year and is a better chance at getting playing time than under Mr. Conservative.
There are a number of players who would benefit going to the Rebels, but apart from playing under the old master, there was no reason for Palmer to go down there. Strangely, his best chance of a start would have been the Reds.

I heard The rebels are also after israel folau.. I wonder if thats true or just some made up rumour to hype the club,.
They could maybe get some argies in the rebels as well…

At least that would be one name Melbourne people would know!!!. Who are, Shepherdson, Palmer, Du Plessis and the countless other names that have been bandied around?.. The Melbourne sporting fraternity will be waiting with baited breath to hear of the next ‘household name’ to be announced as a possible Rebel.

What team is Du Plessis playing for at the moment? Sounds familiar.. was he a bokke?
Anyone have like a full list of Confirmed or Pending signings for the Rebel.. All i know is Cipriani and some rumours of Mortlock going to the rebels..
Mark gasnier as well.. any truth?

I can assure you the rugby fraternity in Melbourne would be more than happy with the signatures of Shep and the Du
Plessis brothers. You need a strong platform up front.
Word is they have passed on Shep so no idea what he has done wrong.
One hopes that a lot of the signings will come from up and coming club players and fringe players in the 4 Super 14 sides.
Australia needs to continue to develop its grass roots. You could pay for 10 rookies at the same price you get Folau.

Bill if you dont know those names i suggest you stick to Aussie Rules…. You are obviously no rugby fan
