Reds confident of a safe future

Reds coach Ewen McKenzie has insisted Queensland’s future remains in safe hands despite being angered by the defection of rising prop Laurie Weeks to the Melbourne Rebels.
On a dramatic day, starting with the surprise exclusion of veteran centre Morgan Turinui from the 26-man tour squad to South Africa, Weeks was announced as the Rebels’ first Australian-based signing.
While McKenzie found Weeks’ decision difficult to fathom, he was quick to reassure Reds fans by revealing he and general manager Daniel Herbert had 22 players on the books for the 2011 Super 15 season and beyond.
They include Wallabies stars James Horwill, Digby Ioane and Will Genia, who re-signed last year, as well as 15 of the 23 players who come off contract in 2010.
Of the 23 only the Faingaa twins, hooker Saia and centre Anthony, have been formally announced as staying at Ballymore after signing a new two-year deal this week.
But McKenzie has chosen to keep the identity of other committed Reds secret to ensure unsigned off-contract players aren’t discouraged or anxious as they work through negotiations.
“We don’t want to fill the roster too early,” he said. “We’ve got 22 for next year and obviously we have others we’re working on.
“It’s not some half-arsed job to grab (players), we’ve actually been quite targeted.
“I’ve been working at it with Daniel Herbert who’s done a great job as well to secure the heart of the team for the long haul and we’re quite confident we’re a long way down the track.
“We want to live in the moment which is 2010.”
McKenzie admitted the Reds still had some hurdles, proven by Australian Super 14 rookie of 2009 Weeks’ move south.
He described the tight-head’s decision to follow his former Sydney University mentor and new Rebels assistant coach Damien Hill to Melbourne as illogical considering he’d become Wallabies material at Ballymore.
Queensland assistant forwards coach Alec Evans feared Weeks would pay the price for leaving the tutelage of 51-Test prop McKenzie.
“If he had another season with the Reds I’m sure it would have elevated him to the Wallabies,” Evans said.
But Evans was confident Weeks’ loss would be covered in 2011 with Greg Holmes stepping up to the mark at tight-head and young guns Jack Kennedy and James Slipper showing great potential.
Playmaker Quade Cooper and fellow Wallabies back Peter Hynes remain at the top of the Reds’ must-keep list but the pair can’t re-sign until sorting out top-up deals with the ARU.
Queensland are also believed to have lost lock Adam Byrnes and reserve halfback Richard Kingi to the Rebels.
Former Wallabies vice-captain Turinui is one who also appears on the outer after being surprisingly overlooked for the Reds’ 26-man squad to tour South Africa.
McKenzie admitted Ioane’s successful move to outside centre in the 50-10 thrashing of the Western Force and a desire to develop Will Chambers and Ben Tapuai had cost the 28-year-old.
“We obviously know a lot about Morgan but there’s a couple of other guys we want to find a little more about,” he said.
Winger Rod Davies has returned from a fractured cheekbone for the three-match tour while in-form flanker Daniel Braid has been cleared of a knee injury.

Would love to know who they have re-signed? Who makes up the 22 they’re talking about for the S15?
reds fan said | March 19th 2010 @ 8:49am | Report comment
there are 32 in the squad. Jim Tucker in the CM today saying Byrnes has signed with Rebels, so that’s 3 gone to them. Plus Braid can’t do another year becuase of the 2 year rule for marquee signings. so thats 4 players. hardman will retire. thats 5. Morgan looks like he’ll be shown the door. thats 6. So that leaves 26 in the squad, of which they say they have 22 locked in. So that leaves 4 maybe’s. Hynes is probably one. three other’s…. ?? hmmm… We also need to consider Link might want to drop some so he can recruit.

Agree on the 6 you have named, throw in Hynes and Cooper (they have ARU contracts to negotiate also) so that leaves two players off contract. Of course, the numbers might be a bit all over the shop due to Academy players such as Schatz, Slipper and Tapuai having signed for next year, and Tim Walsh may just have a one-year contract for 2010 (as apparently Kingi must have). Maybe Van is about to retire too (he is about 106).
Weeks is a big loss in the short term: you can never have too many quality THP’s. Still, Dayna Edwards was good in 2008 and Holmes has looked good off the bench at THP. In the future there is young Slipper and Alo-Emile in the Academy.
Byrnes is also a loss, as tall timber is hard to find these days, , Van Humphries has to retire someday, and there really are not any young second rowers in the Academy as far as I know. Thats where it would be nice if MMM or Heenan could come home (or, actually, both of them: there is a good chance that at least one would be fit at any given time).

I thought young Simmons did well starting against the Force. With Byrnes signing to the Rebels, I’m sure Link will give Simmons heaps of game time.
I know it’s hard for fans of the Reds to contemplate, but between a good coach like Link and the style of rugby we are playing, we might just be in a position to recruit for once.
ie. Is there room for Gasnier?

Why would we want southern dreck like Gasnier?
reds fan said | March 19th 2010 @ 9:36am | Report comment
I was just putting it out there. I’m with you on this. Chambers will be a good understudy for Digby.

The only recruitment we need to do is get Queenslanders to come home, and keep the talent developed in Qld.

Ha ha re MMM and Heenan.
I saw Heenan outside Suncorp at the Reds – Force game – so perhaps the might be something in it?

Van has been one of the reds best and has resigned

Got to give UQ forward Heath Tessmann a go now that Weeks is gone. And yes lets get Gasnier from Paris and Paul Warick back from MUNSTER!

Heath is a gun, sign him up

Who will be the OS marqee signing if Braid’s contract doesn’t get an extension from the ARU?
Rockin Rod said | March 20th 2010 @ 6:47pm | Report comment
Have to sign a 10 for Cooper if he goes to France, Lucus not starting S15 material just yet and Walsh should be playing Golden Oldies

Hearing lots of chat about Sabastian Chabal being interested in playing Super 14 soon and is on the record saying that he enjoys everything about Brisbane!
rem said | March 19th 2010 @ 10:43am | Report comment
Now that would be interesting – The Caveman in Brissey…
JF said | March 19th 2010 @ 10:49am | Report comment
Yeah I would love to see a big European name come down, Chabal would be great, someone like him or Harinordoquy, Dusautoir would be massive for the reds.
AndyS said | March 19th 2010 @ 11:39am | Report comment
Now that would be a marquee player that could pull in the crowd!

I can see the black long-haired wigs on sale alongside Reds jumpers now….
formeropenside said | March 19th 2010 @ 10:55am | Report comment
We probably do need a another second row specialist – potentially next season it could be Horwill and Simmons with no real backup. Maybe thats the best spot to fill with the marquee player.
That also leaves Liam Gill, Tomiki and Shaw to bicker over the 7 jersey, perhaps with Luafutu thrown in too.
reds fan said | March 19th 2010 @ 11:02am | Report comment
yeah, lock and 7 are looming as the real holes to fill.
Rockin Rod said | March 20th 2010 @ 8:19pm | Report comment
Reds should go after NSW A 7, Chris Alcock, freak

CHABAL! Sold… Let’s get the petition going… I don’t care if he just sits on the bike a la Willie Mason, that would still get me to games!
Comrade Bear said | March 19th 2010 @ 11:48am | Report comment
Noice! Chabal V Todd Clever V Luafutu on the bikes on the sidelines…
BTW – Where are Tomiki and Luafutu this year?!? I have heard and seen nothing of them apart from Tomeki in the odd Acadamy game.

Weeks going to the Rebels is not catastrophic. The media and a few others have wrapped this young man up as if he is a gold mine. I’ve been watching him since he first came on the scene with the Reds and for the life of me I can’t see that he is all that great. It seems to me that on most occassions his side of the scrum is the side that gives way when under pressure. Holmes when he comes on is rock solid in the set pieces. Weeks is more mobile around the park and that’s were Holmes has to improve if he want’s to get back into contention. I agree that secondrow is were we need some bolstering, Simmonds looks good but we need back-up. If there is a chance that MMM or Keenan could be enticed back that would be great. Chabal would certainely get bums on seats and be good on the field (he’s actually a good player). Open side will be a concern but Link, I’m sure will have this in hand and as fomeropenside pointed out there is a few waiting their turn to show their wares given the opportunity.
