ARU must not let Melbourne rebel

Melbourne joining the Super 15 next year should not be taken lightly by the ARU. If foreign players are going to join the side, the ARU must ensure that they mentor younger Melbourne-based rugby players and ensure a strong rugby culture develops.

Being an AFL city, the ARU must stamp its authority strongly and swiftly, otherwise the team could prove to be a national embarrassment.

The signing of Danny Cipriani is especially significant.

The Englishman can be marketed as a draw-card to rugby matches and being in the Super 15 should suit his style of play. Hopefully his entertaining play can attract a younger generation of Melbourne-based rugby players.

The best thing the Rebels can do at this stage is focus on signing influential leaders to their side and to build the franchise on their strengths.

Failure to do so will result in a lack of depth and possible collapse with foreign players eventually departing home.
