Doug Bollinger will be hoping to claim his first 10-wicket haul in a match when play resumes on Monday in the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

Australia took 11 wickets on Sunday to have the Kiwis in a miserable position at 5-187, needing another 115 runs to make Australia bat a second time with two days of play remaining.

Bollinger’s 5-28 off 13 overs helped Australia skittle the Kiwis for 157 at the Basin Reserve, giving the tourists a first-innings lead of 302.

Ricky Ponting enforced the follow-on and the Black Caps stumbled again, although opener Tim McIntosh made a determined 83 while Bollinger took 2-30.

Paceman Bollinger said skipper Ricky Ponting had asked his bowlers late in New Zealand’s first innings if they were okay to continue with a follow-on, and they all said yes.

“At that time of the day when we had bowled them out pretty cheaply it was going to be good to keep going,” Bollinger said.

“It’s worked out well so far, they’re five down now and hopefully we get a couple of early ones tomorrow.”

Kiwi coach Mark Greatbatch was unhappy with some of the umpiring decisions and called the Umpire Decision Review System into question.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori had confronted match referee Javagal Srinath during the break between innings on Sunday.

But Greatbatch said the Black Caps simply had to get on with it.

“We’ve got to show some fighting qualities to keep in the Test match,” he said.

Vettori is 18 not out with Brendon McCullum on four.

The Black Caps had resumed on Sunday at 4-108 in their first innings, losing 6-49 including 5-9 at the end of the innings as Bollinger ran riot.

The second Test of the two-match series starts on March 27 in Hamilton.
