Leeds United defender Patrick Kisnorbo was stretched off eight minutes into a 2 – 0 home defeat to Millwall on Monday night after a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon.

Leeds Manager Simon Grayson said: “Unfortunately for Paddy, he has got a severe Achilles injury, which will rule him out of the rest of the season and probably the World Cup as well”.

With regular first team football this season and a man of the match performance in Leeds shock third round FA Cup victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the gritty Australian defender seemed to be back in favour with national selectors and was certain to claim a seat on the plane to South Africa.

With the lose of Kisnorbo for the remainder of the League One season and question marks over sharp shooter Jermaine Beckford’s fitness, Leeds are going to have to dig deep to hold on to second place and automatic promotion.

With a chasing pack including Millwall, Charlton and Swindon desperate to catch the Yorkshire outfit, this Saturday’s trip to league leaders Norwich is a chance for Leeds to regain momentum and confidence to ensure a birth in the Championship next season.
