Former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds scored 45 runs and took two wickets for his Indian Premier League side the Deccan Chargers, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them going down by 24 runs to the Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata on Thursday.
Symonds claimed the vital wickets of opener Chris Gayle and No.3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, but spearheaded by Sourav Ganguly’s 88 runs from 54 balls, Kolkata managed a strong total of 181 for the loss of six wickets at their Eden Gardens’ home.
Australian legend Adam Gilchrist failed with nine at the top of Deccan’s innings, but opening partner Herschelle Gibbs gave his side hope with 50 from 45 balls.
Monish Mishra scored 29, and Symonds batting at No.4 hit 45 off 37 balls, but it wasn’t enough, and the Chargers finished the overs 5/157 to lose by 24 runs.
