Adelaide's quest for top spot continues in Korea

Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar can excuse his players feeling slightly intimidated against Korean club Pohang Steelers. But Vidmar says there’s no reason for his charges to be fearful at the imposing Korean venue, dubbed the Steelyard, on Tuesday night.

The Reds can likely seal top spot in their Asian Champions League (ACL) group with a win against Pohang.

But the Steelyard has been a graveyard for visiting teams, with the hosts unbeaten in their past 10 ACL matches at the venue.

Pohang’s last ACL loss at home was against Adelaide in March 2008, and Vidmar hopes that experience aids his side Tuesday night.

The Reds have five players in their team who have savoured victory at the Steelyard – captain Travis Dodd, Cassio, Robert Cornthwaite, Eugene Galekovic and Lucas Pantelis.

“It’s quite an intimidating place,” Vidmar said.

“It’s a really compact ground and if there are a lot of supporters there it makes it quite intimidating.

“So we’ll know well be up for a very tough game but I’m very confident we can get the right result.”

The Reds and Steelers both have nine points from their four ACL games in group, with Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Shandong Luneng lagging with three points each.

Adelaide have won their past three fixtures against Pohang and have yet to concede a goal against the reigning ACL champions.

“We’ve had decent results against them (but) I wouldn’t say they’re our bunnies,” Vidmar said.

“They’ll want to win as much as we do and it’s always a difficult game at the Steelyard, but we’re pretty confident in what we’ve already achieved so far in this competition.

“So we’ll go there in a pretty good mood and look for the three points.”
