Brendan Fevola’s manager Alastair Lynch says reports on the volume of his star client’s debts due to his gambling addiction are “totally wrong”.

News of the Brisbane spearhead’s gambling problem was revealed this week, with some reporting his debts were in the vicinity of $300,000.

But Lynch has denied those rumours, saying the real amount owed was less than $100,000.

“That’s totally wrong. The numbers I know of, and I’m sure they’re the right numbers, it’s certainly less than $100,000,” Lynch told Fox Sports prior to Brisbane’s clash with the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba.

“It’s substantial money, but we’re not going anywhere near the numbers that’s been discussed in the press.”

Lynch also responded to reports Fevola has had his car repossessed, saying that story was “absolutely false”.

The revelations are the latest in a string of problems for the former Carlton full-forward, who was traded to the Lions after his drunken antics at last year’s Brownlow Medal function.

Fevola himself admitted in an interview with Lynch he would have preferred the matter remained private and didn’t plan to talk about it again.

“I don’t think it really needs to be spoken about much more than this interview,” he said.

“I didn’t really want it to come out to the public forum but that’s the way footy is these days.

“(But) I feel a little bit better that it’s come out.

“(The story’s) been around for a while, I’ve been punting since I was about 16 or 17.

“I’ve probably been working through it since early February.

“I think if you’re a punter you don’t really want to admit that you are a punter.”

Fevola also said he’s been surprised by the level of support he has received for a matter that has impacted “every part” of his life.

“It’s been amazing. (I’ve been) a little bit surprised because I get knocked a bit which is probably my own fault,” he said.

“It impacts on every part of life. But I’ve been pretty fortunate that it hasn’t really impacted on my footy.

“When I cross that line you’re in footy mode.”
