Australia Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke says he hopes the IPL can survive Monday’s dramatic suspension of tournament boss Lalit Modi. The Indian cricket board suspended Modi following allegations of corruption and match-fixing.

Clarke is one of several top Australian players who have opted against playing in the lucrative domestic tournament in the past three years but says it has been a great benefit to the next generation of Australian players.

“The IPL is a wonderful tournament. It has given guys a great opportunity on a major stage to state their case for international cricket,” Clarke said in St Lucia on Sunday as Australia prepared for the World T20 which starts on April 30.

“Guys have gone over there and done really well at the IPL level and they’ve got their chance for their country.

“It’s a tournament that I would love to take part in at the right time. I just haven’t found the right time so far in my career.

“I hope I will in the future. Speaking to the guys who played a part this year, they said the tournament was fantastic.

“They had a great time and the cricket was very competitive.

“I really hope that it does continue and I hope one day I get an opportunity to take part.”

The news of Modi’s suspension came just hours after the final on Sunday night of a tournament he built into a multi-billion-dollar industry.
