God forsakes Fury for Glory on the other side

9 Have your say

God of football, Robbie Fowler, may well have forsaken the already embattled North Queensland Fury by leaving for greener pastures in our nation’s west.

It could be argued that the Fury are not a one man team; I totally agree, but what Fowler did bring to the Fury was hope, a spark, a leader and crowds.

How many Fury fans are now to feel hung out to dry that their superstar has left? How many fans will not turn out to see the Fury lose every second and third match now that the shining light has diminished?

Life after Fowler will certainly go on, but for how long?

It seems God has put the final nail in the coffin and condemned the Fury to the fiery pits of football failure.

Ironically, however, the Fury could pull off a Glory-esque (remember the signings of Coyne and Sterjovski last season) off season and revamp the entire squad, push for the final series and show that life after Fowler is in fact better than ever before.

Just how realistic is this sliver of hope though? Almost non-existent I’d say. Steffanutto left, Fowler left, how long until Williams goes?

The remaining squad that the Fury “boasts” – if you can call it boasting – is Spagnuolo, Brockie, Talay and Grossman. Were any of those players, at their former clubs, any more than bit part players? I think not.

I hope that the Fury can recover, but how realistic is it? A club forsaken and condemned by God himself, left in remote rugby league land, like a dingy without a motor out at sea. The hope that they can recover is just that – a hope.
