Sonny Bill could be rugby gold

With cap in hand, Graham Henry will be first of the rank in a long line of suitors attempting to sway the thinking of Khoder Nasser, the sports agent representing Sonny Bill Williams.
As the All Blacks coach, Henry holds arguably the premium coaching job in world rugby and is first in line.
Despite Henry cutting a terrifying figure, no-one in their right mind would attempt to push in front of him. This is a man that makes nearly a whole team of All Blacks tremble in their boots.
It’s odd to picture Henry prostrating himself in front of this would be king, however. Henry is a man on a mission.
He is in search of the golden factor – a rugby player that is able to create awe in the opposition and whose physical prowess leaves commentators speechless.
Many believe that Williams potentially has this golden touch.
Dan Carter had it, Giteau thought he had it, the Steyn’s have it (but only in their boots) and perhaps Richie McCaw found it. Jonah Lomu had an abundance of it and Robbie Deans thought O’Connor had it.
Henry’s right to go after Williams. Golden players make oppositions think twice, whether that ends up being a moment of hesitation, or forcing them to kick as a safe option. While scrums may sometimes take five minutes, a game can be won in a second and it’s hesitation that makes those seconds happen.
The All Blacks always have a list of quality players which rise in stature when they don the jersey, however there are few golden players amongst their ranks.
Outside of Williams, there is Victor Vito and Rene Ranger. Players like Guilford and Cruden are also good footballers but the x-factor eludes them. I also suspect that Will Genia possesses a touch of gold as well.
If Henry wants the crown next year, then perhaps he needs to offer gold to the rugby gods.
Williams, though unproven, is a good option to pursue.
Henry also needs to mine his own fields, he needs to bring Vito on-board this year (which is likely anyway) and he needs to play the chance card and get Ranger under his wing.

So we’ve finally reached the day when the All Blacks feel the need to import a star from outside of New Zealand into their team. That is the beginning of the end.
The big question is whether SBW is happy playing rugby or wants back into the NRL like most of the other converts. My tip for NRL interest would be the Warriors or perhaps even Manly given the Kiwi connection there.
If its all about money though then SBW won’t be leaving France any time soon.

Cant see Warriors being able to afford him now after they signed Mateo and Inu

There’s something weird going on with Manly. They have quite a few players still unsigned despite reports they were all signed up including Foran, Hodkinson & Matai. Suggests they are hedging their bets wating to see who will come on the market. If they are not in the hunt for $BW looks like they are ready to pounce on some Storm stars.

Good post, Stash. What did HK think of the Amlin final?
His agents got SBW a sweetheart of a deal. If he returns to NZ it would be a huge surprise if he doesn’t become a starting AB. His last two games for Toulon tell you a lot. In the semi, he made a vintage run, slashing and gliding and eating up turf. Later, he took the ball from a ruck a few metres out from the line and did a classic step, spin and reach for a try. He hit the rucks and ran down runners. In the final, against Cardiff, he did what they pay him to do – scored a try. Award him a black shirt he’ll score more tries.
SH rugby needs players like SBW. I’m an Aussie and cheer for the Wallabies, but I want to see the great players doing their thing in this part of the world. Sign up, Sonny Bill, your country needs you.

Hobart, what position has he been playing recently – is he still in the centres, or is he actually in the pack now?

Yep, SBW had a good game against Cardiff yesterday. He made a couple of wrong decisions earlier in the match; one which may (or may not) have cost Toulon a try in the 2nd minute of the match. Other than that though, he was really impressive and given a bit more time will develop into a good centre.
I’m not sure if he’ll be ready for the WC though. I don’t think NZ should be throwing newby’s into the RWC. Look what happened to the Wallabies when the ARU did this with Tuquri, Sailor and Rogers back in 03… Shocker.

OJ – this reads like a beat up to me, the ABs have never gone pursuing talent from other codes, if it wants to come & it’s good enough they’ll play them aka Brad Thorn, my bulls**t meter is going off over this one !

I think back to that Barbarians game in Sydney. You know, that washout where the Wallabies turned it into a no contest?
Mortlock smashed SBW in the centres. I don’t think he’d shine like he does up there back down here in S14, or even ANZC!

I hope we can get him back to southern hemisphere rugby. He was a fantastic player in his NRL days and i would love to see him in an All Blacks strip playing the damaging football he played in the NRL. As for playing rugby in France I dont reckon the quality of the game would complare to anything other than Club rugby in the southern hemiphere. So it will definitly be a real test for him if he was to make the switch.
Good luck to him.

As I have posted previously, SBW will end up deeply regretting playing under Henry, like I suspect Mauger, Hayman and Collins. He would be far wiser to opt for Australia and the Wallabies would be mad not to chase him. He’s got the massive potential that Deans could possibly unlock.

Yeah, they hated playing under Henry so much they played a combined total of 96 tests under him.
What on earth makes you think they regret it?

What, like Tahu? Maybe if Deans were coaching the Crusaders. The truth of the matter is that a Test squad is not the place to be teaching someone rugby.

I agree OJ and if you get a chance to read Brendan Cannons blunt assessment of Tahu’s time in the Wallaby jumper I get the feeling the big name league experiment is a done and dusted in ex Wallaby eyes?
If it was a purely bums on seats marketing I would suggest the Rebels grab him as really does anyone think he is able to meet the AB standards before 2011 RWC?
I don’t think he can, great league player, good Union player.

Well lets face it,SWB is the first NZ league player that could possibly cut it in the AllBlacks, hes that good, for him to impress Henry says it all really.
All the people who say SBW is all about the dollars are just normaly bitter hard core league fans, they believe what they want to believe, its comedy gold when you see a guy like Thurston come out after so long spouting on and on about money.
When getting the top dollar he then comes out saying hes staying for the kids, but hey the fans fall for that because….well he stayed.
To me being a fan of both codes it would be really interesting to watch, same reason id rather watch Weepu having a crack in the NRL if hes not wanted by the All Blacks.
I hope if SBW does go back to NZ and the NZ rugby public embrace him,he needs it after being portrayed as the big bad wolf over here in Australia, all because he had the nerve to do what he wanted, the cheek of it.

It appears as if the offer has several exit clauses for Williams. It also looks like they would need him to play in the ITM Cup for a New Zealand provisional side with a view to joining the AB squad for the end of year tour.
I couldn’t see Williams looking to play for the Wallabies – wearing an All Black jumper is an aspiration which is in the DNA of Kiwis.
I don’t condone using overseas players – so I agree with him having to go play ITM before he gets a crack at the jumper.
Personally, I suspect this has a 95% chance of occurring – Henry and co weren’t happy about Hayman staying overseas after their grand overtures. You would think they have a sense this is going to happen, otherwise it would be cloak and dagger – behind closed doors type of discussion.
The timing is good for Williams at 25 – if he gets a jersey now and has a good turn as an All Black – then his value increases substantially for his final years in offshore clubs.

Did enjoy watching him play for the Barbarians last year, I think it would be good for SH rugby if he did come back.
Also think, as mentioned in the article, Vito and Ranger should be given a crack they’ve played well.

Spot on, the hype around the Barbarians game last year was great and SBW showed enough potential. Also liked that he looked to be really enjoying the lead up to and the actual event. It would be great to have him as part of SH rugby in a world cup year.
