The Socceroos face Serbia in their final group match in Nelspruit at 4.30am Thursday knowing they need to win and hope that either Ghana knock off Germany or the Germans give The Black Stars a touch up in the other Group D match, played at the same time in Johannesburg.
I’ll have all the running analysis and permutations LIVE here, in the comments section below, so join me from 4.15am (EST) and be sure to share your thoughts before, during and after the game.
MY PREDICTION (as much in hope as anything); I saw enough in the performance against Ghana to suggest that the Roos can put a whole heap of pressure on Serbia and make life uncomfortable for them. Get in their face and, with a bit of luck, they might crumble. They were very lucky not to cop a few against a 10 man Germany, who over-powered them. If the Roos can control the pace of Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic on the flanks (and David Carney and Luke Wilkshire will be crucial in that respect), the game can definitely be won in central midfield, where Australia can get on top and over-run the likes of Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Dejan Stankovic and Milos Ninkovic.
3-1 to the Socceroos (2-0 will also do just fine), with the hope that Podolski actually converts his chances this time to give Germany a 3-0 hiding of a 10 man Ghana (with the Socceroos and Germany each scoring their final goal in the last 10 minutes – thrilling, edge of the seat stuff, with many twists!!).
That would give Ghana and the Roos four points each, with a -2 goal difference each, but the Roos would go through courtesy of having scored four goals (or three), to Ghana’s two.
A interesting sidenote, if the final scores are Germany 4-0, Australia 1-0, it will go down to a drawing of lots between Australia and Ghana, as both teams would be equal on points, equal on goal difference, with the result between them on Matchday 2 being a draw.

I will be up in the morning praying and wishing for a good result. Funny to see John Howard in a TV news item addressing the team, I’m sure that’s going to help a lot. I hope it was a better speech then Kevin Rudd’s one.. C’mon the Roos

Not to rub it in for those of you having to get up at stupid o’clock, but I will be watching the game at a local bar at the very civilised local time of 2.30pm. I suspect the barman will be a little perplexed when I ask him to switch one of the TVs to a soccer game between a small mountainous European country and an even smaller place that Americans barely recognise as the country they bombed before Iraq. But as there’s no NASCAR race today the rednecks shouldn’t be too upset.

USA through, rednecks at bar happy, otherwise I think they would’ve blamed a Euro-socialist-islamist plot and demanded we switch the TV back to ESPN Sports Center.

Not 100% confident that things will go Australia’s way, but we can only hope and cheer on the boys.

4.32am; Good morning and welcome to this LIVE running analysis of the crunch Socceroos vs Serbia Group D clash being played in Nelspruit.
After the Durban Debacle and the Rouse In Rustenburg, the Socceroos know the scenario here. Nothing short of the three points will do.
And it’s all eyes on Johannesburg, where, simultaneously, Germany are playing Ghana in the other Group D clash. Provided the Roos can get the job done here, there are two possible scenarios that would see them through to a date with USA in Rustenburg on Sunday morning (4.30am EST);
1. Ghana cause a massive shock by knocking off the Germans (Ghana would finish first on seven points, Australia second on four), or
2. Germany beat Ghana comfortably, with the goal differential between Ghana and Australia being five goals, or more (eg. Germany win 3-0, Australia win 2-0 or Germany win 4-0, Australia win 2-1 or Germany 2-0, Australia 4-1 etc)
There’s a third scenario, which involves a draw between Germany and Ghana, and a Portugal-esque seven goal winning margin for the Roos, but that’s beyond a fantasy.
Most likely, if it is to happen, is a narrow Roos win and a German dissection of The Black Stars. Fingers crossed, either way.
The team news is in and Pim Verbeek has made three changes to the team the drew with Ghana, with Tim Cahill returning from suspension for Brett Holman, Michael Beauchamp in for the suspended Craig Moore, while Josh Kennedy comes in for the suspended Harry Kewell.
As for Serbia, Radi Antic has made two changes to the team that impressed in knocking off Germany. Lukovic comes back in for Subotic, and Obradovic comes in for Koralov
The teams:
AUSTRALIA – Mark Scharzer; Luke Wikshire, Michael Beauchamp, Lucas Neill, David Carney; Jason Culina, Carl Valeri; Brett Emerton, Tim Cahill, Mark Breciano; Josh Kennedy.
SERBIA – Vladimir Stojkovic; Branislav Ivanovic, Aleksandar Lukovic, Nemanja Vidic, Obradovic; Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Dejan Stankovic, Milos Ninkovic; Milos Krasic, Nikola Zigic, Milan Jovanovic.
