Big ups go out to SBS for their outstanding coverage of the World Cup thus far. In depth analysis of matches, live games and replays, documentaries and the very funny Santos Sam and Ed show.
We are at the half way stage and have been blessed with 24 hours a day 7 days a week of pure football. The 2010 World Cup is the best sports coverage I have ever watched on Australia television; SBS showing the way of how sports should be presented. Catering for the corporate but cleverly done with the viewer in mind. Commercials were all about football, but the one I can never get tired of is this gem.
Take a bow SBS for the Logie is already on its way.
SBS certainly punches above all expectations in my view, and sent a clear message to Frank Lowy and FFA that the home of football is, and always will be, SBS. In the next football media deal, SBS must be included in some form for Australian football content.
Big up also goes out to every fan and bandwagon supporter who woke up at stupid hours of the winter mornings to go out and watch a football match that they could have quite comfortably watched at home.
Big ups to the cafes and bars that applied for 24 hour license to allow fans a catered service and atmosphere at no extra charge. Thanks to the guys that requested road closures at 4am to keep their patrons safe – the road provided a place to stand when all seats were occupied. Yes, we are still in Australia.
Big up to New Zealand football for promoting the A-League on the international stage and giving the perceived minnow football nations a chance to dream the impossible. Big up to Shane Smeltz for scoring a massive goal for the A-League and big up to Riki Herbert, A-League coach one year, World Cup hero the next.
Big up to Pim Verbeek. All we can say is that he did HIS best. There are many things Australia can learn from the Verbeek era, but beautiful football it most certainly is not. Thanks, send us a post card, no hard feelings.
Big up to the lads that travelled to South Africa, the ones that worked the weekend and double shifts to be there, we salute you.
Big up to all of Africa. My feelings before the tournament was one of caution. I am now ecstatic that Africa has managed to uniquely stage the World Cup to make it one of the most memorable ever held. First time held in Africa and it wont be remembered for its beautiful football, but the goals this Cup has scored for the African people will have this land rejoicing for many years to come.
And big up to every single one of you that has somehow participated in Africa’s World Cup. Whether you were glued to the TV, reading the papers or drinking latte at 3am. It breaks down the myths that suggests that Australia is not a football nation…. we already are one. Yes we are. No other event can pull tens of thousands of fans at 3am in the morning. And just imagine if the World Cup wasn’t even available on free-to-air…. now imagine we host it in 2022.
Big up, and a special mention, to the champions of Asia, the Matildas. Our women are very much a part of this journey. They get their turn this time next year when they play their World Cup in Germany.
And big ups to our retiring Roos for you have done us proud and we would love to see you back home at an A-League club. We have a league that is still in its infancy and with your help, we can aim towards, A-League football, becoming the most successful league in Australia.
The future is bright, it’s just up to us to make the dream, become a reality.

Agree.
Excellent coverage from SBS as usual, every game live and in HD or 3D – fantastic.
You mightn’t agree with their comments, but they are the best media station covering football.
World Cup Fever has been a success too.
Only improvement would be to sub Hill and Slater for Bash and Muskie in the commentary box.

Bash is ok but I’d definitely prefer Simon Hill – by himself though rather than with Robbie “you must put a shot on target from there” Slater

SBS coverage has been brilliant…the picture quality magnificent…the commentators both studio and game have been good…and it feels like the tournament is the biggest in the world. Also love Ed, Sam and Santo’s take on the games each night with some truly hilarious skits. SBS has done the competition proud with its coverage and the numbers of viewers watching games into the night is amazing. Keep upu the good work.

The picture quality has nothing to do with SBS, they just get the feed off of the host broadcaster. Besides Dempsey and perhaps Zelic, the rest have been extremely ordinary. The only good thing they’ve done is the Santo, Sam and Ed show.

Football fans in Australia, what more could we ask. I should imagine that no other country on earth gets a more comprehensive coverage of the World Cup than we get on SBS.
Broad range of views & presenting styles from members of the team, but big standout for me is Kimon Taliadoros.
Looking for a new CEO for the FFA,he’s the man in my book.

We certainly need someone connected with Australia and who has skin in the game of football to coach us and lead us, not Demetriou’s understudy.
Come on Kimon!

“A big up” for you Cpaaa—a well written article and you have supported SBS with me when some have sunk the boot in with some pitiful comments. More power to you Cpaaa. Long live SBS, Les, Fozz, and their entire crew. Shame on the FFA for their treatment of a network that has done so much for Australian Football.
Btw just love the SBS 2 extension for Australian Football. And for the coming HAL season Sam, Santo, and Ed should continue their Football Fever Show into the A-League season they have been magnificent with some of the best Football satire, I have seen—especially the North Korean President (“What yerr want?” Nth Korea won world Cup goodbye now”) who would have thought that…?

haha thanks for the “big up” AF. It would be great to have Santos Sam and Ed continuing a role in the A-League. We do need our own version of “im on setanta sports”. Spain has a similar one called “crackovia”
,
Its pretty much just a 15min skit of the football week. star of the show is Guti, well known as a partyboy, pimpampimpam
I do like the idea of Kimon on the board at FFA. Is he perhaps one of these football people that Fozz says is lacking at HQ.
I do love Neds passion coming out and hope we see more of him.
David Z. also comfortable in front of camera and gives good insight.
Ive been happy with Bash and Muski and the legendary Martin Tyler but both have been awarded with a ” Long Bow” lol. Thank Football Fever for that on as well. I will miss the “Rivaldo Awards”
but “wat u want” , is to see santos sam and ed, continue or replace “im on setanta sports” with an australian version. everyone i recommended them to has loved it.

And at least we can thank the dreaded Jabulani for the “Not even close” segment. As an over 35D’s sunday footballer it makes me feel that I’m playing not too dissimilar to the world’s top football stars!

The coverage has been fantastic, but I can never get over how every SBS presenter feels the need to pronounce any foreign words with that country’s particular accent. I shudder every time Les tells us how well Jason “Chulina” played for either the Gold Coast or Australia.

The fact that it is every SBS presenter should be a clue…….. it is the Special Broadcasting Service agfter all. Its legislated mandate is to cater to a specified audience for particular reasons. Well done to them I say!

I agree with AF, SBS should keep the “Santo, Sam and Ed” format for the forthcoming football season.
Just 30 – 60 minutes once a week having fun with the A-League and the overseas leagues.
Us football people sometimes get carried away being a bit too earnest about the game and sometimes forget its the comic side of football that makes the game even greater.
Bring Dukes, Aloisi, Archie in during the season ( they are all good value) and more skits.
What a great way to promote the local game on free to air.

Good article. Ive only just started to full apprciate football in the last 6 months, so the world cup around at a great time for me. Great coverage, particularily Santo, Sam and Ed, they are brilliant, nothing like a good laugh. Ed Kavalee is comic genius. I just wish now A-League was on free to air, preferably SBS.
