Eels declare Hayne their No.1 and only

Parramatta players have unashamedly declared Jarryd Hayne to be their saviour as they attempt another last-minute dash at the NRL finals.
Athletes often talk up the merits of the team instead of over-praising an individual, but the Eels have no problems admitting Hayne’s freakish ability is what can carry them into the top eight.
While stressing the 16 other players wearing blue and gold need to do their job, Mannah said Hayne had the unique ability to almost single-handedly dictate a team’s fortunes.
“I think it takes a special player in the competition that can have an effect on a team like that. He’s one of those players, when he’s firing, he does help the other players through,” said Mannah, confident Parramatta’s chances are alive again after Hayne’s dazzling three-try display against North Queensland on Monday.
“He’s unreal. That performance showed what he’s capable of, he’s the kind of inspirational player that gets the team going and he was on the front foot last night.
“He got everyone else sparkling a bit, the way he was playing so we’ll take a lot of confidence out of that.”
Mannah went through State of Origin camp with Hayne, and was impressed with the star fullback’s maturity.
Last year’s Dally M medallist had been under plenty of media pressure, including speculation he was unhappy at the club, but shrugged away all that pressure to return to his best for NSW and the Eels.
“He’s a pretty cool head and I think he’s matured a lot as a person in the last few years so he knows how to handle himself,” Mannah said.
“It was no surprise to see how much of a quality person he is and how well he handled himself.
“I think it takes someone with good leadership skills to be able to choose what he did.
Parramatta lock Feleti Mateo says witnessing Hayne’s comeback has inspired the Eels to dig in for each other as they make another late run for the NRL finals.
Just like last year when the Eels came from the clouds to eventually qualify for the grand final, Hayne is again the inspiration.
Mateo said the star fullback has matured into a true leader of the team.
“Yeah, I reckon he does (inspire), I know it lifts myself and makes me want to go harder,” he said.
“He does a lot of stuff through his actions, he’s matured too so he’s talking at the same time, so he’s just becoming a better and better player.
“I think the whole team, we’re at the point where we have to start winning games and he’s just taken on a leadership role and has for a while now so we’ve just started to talk across the board and it was good that we could take it out there on the field.”
While their 36-24 defeat of the Cowboys was only a step in the right direction, Mateo said there were signs their famed attacking streak is back.
“We talked about it heaps during the week, supporting each other and just having a dig and I think we did that,” he said.

This guy is growing into a powerhouse athlete. Mate, i have never seen such a powerful run. He must have run that 50 metres in around 5 seconds. Awesome. The Hayne train is back,.

That was a great game to watch. Hayne dominated Thurston..
But thruston set up 2 great tries with his great passing.
I can already hear a french top 14 rugby club opening their account book to woo the guy…

Thurston is now officially Hayne’s bunny.
Gus Gould said something the other day that rings true. I can’t remember it completely but it went something like:
Lachlan Coote and Josh Duggan make other players look good by being in the right place all the time, and supporting all the time. Hayne doesn’t make anyone else look good. He plays a lone game.
What I can’t understand is the Eels seemingly waiting for Hayne to win them games. It can’t be good for the team, but it is almost like they just sit back and wait for Hayne to do something. Shouldn’t they want to win without him doing something? I know above Mateo says Haynes makes him want to lift his game, but none of them seem to lift their game at all, it is Hayne scoring these freak trys to win games.
Next thing I can’t work out is whether Hayne really is that good, or the opposition poor at times. Thurston tackles him properly and he doesn’t score a try. Instead Thurston, after being repeatedly run over by Hayne during Origin, still hasn’t learned how to tackle, and goes high, Hayne is too powerful and try occurs.
I know he is good, but I can’t help but think some of those ‘freak trys’ were really just poor defense. That St George one last year… noone even wanted to go near him. He stood there for a few seconds and noone closed him down. If anything they opened up for him to run through.
I just can’t figure it out. It has me perplexed.

Wow. Are you another supporter of the theory that Hayne didn’t play well, all the other teams just happened to play really, really bad, coincidentally on the day they each played Parramatta, making Hayne look good?
If the defence was so bad, why didn’t any other players just stroll through them like Hayne did?

Should have seen this coming I guess.
Please read what I have written.
I say he is good, but I also think that he is helped at times by poor opposition. Again, Thurston tackles properly, rather than grabbing him up high, and Hayne doesn’t score his third try. Yes, he still would have scored a fantastic double, great he is a good player etc, but his third try should not have happened. And please don’t try to say he made Thurston look bad. Thurston should realise after the first game of Origin this year that Hayne is never going to run around him. Hayne bee lines straight to him every time. All Thurston had to do was tackle properly. Thurston used to be a strong defender. Now he seems very reluctant to try to do so properly.
Please read what I have written before saying I don’t understand the game, or that I am saying Hayne is s–t. That is not what I wrote, and not what I am saying. I am saying that as good as Hayne is, I think at certain times, he is aided by poor play from his opposition.

At least there are some nice people commenting on this site, the majority of comments on the Daily Telegraph’s NRL page are by snide negative trolls

Yeah Oikee, I too seem to be on the telegraphs ‘blocked’ list. not really surprised after I asked them several times to justify facts within their stories.. I’m afraid that only about 10% of what that paper prints is factual.
I believe that they are owned by News Limited???.. makes ya wonder hey!!!!! News Ltd own NRL (A shambles). News Limited own Melbourne Storm (A disaster), News limited own Daily Telegraph (Spreader of anti NRL gossip and factless commentaries.) No wonder they don’t want us commenting Oikee, we don’t want to read non fiction articles about our great game!!!! . need I say more.

It is a sin that any article should openly state that if one player does not fire the rest can’t win a game. Parra have one of the best teams in the league (on paper). The sooner they think like a team and include Jarryd as just a member of that team, the sooner they will start winning games again.
We seem to be losing sight of the fact that Eels beat Cowboys and with their defence this year that is not something to sing about.
