Wallabies must go for the 50/50 ball

I wonder when the Wallabies will realise that the days of simply busting through the defensive line on the 22 untouched to score under the posts are long gone.

Watching a little more league than union recently (and why not? I see sport as entertainment, after all) I think there may be merit in the up and under into the in goal or the sneaky poke through the line for the running back. Let’s call for the 50/50 ball.

Sadly though, the current Australia squad have neither a tall and capable high-marking backline player nor someone with the toe of Slater or Hayne. But one of Rod Davies or Lachlan Turner may just be that man. Davies is a gifted finisher and someone with speed and an ability to find the stripe. Turner has speed and is a balanced ball carrier (albeit with some defensive question marks but no worse than O’Conner).

With both Bledisloe and Tri-Nations gone for another (wasted) year, is it time for throw one of them into the mix pre-RWC2011?
