Muscat was not guilty in incident with Akoto

The Melbourne Victory Vs North Queensland game at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon has to go down as one of the most controversial in the A-League’s history, for a number of reasons.
There were three penalties, three more shouts for penalties, two players red carded and five yellow cards – two of them for simulation.
But the one incident from the game that has everyone talking is the sending off of Fury defender Akoto after he shoved Victory captain Kevin Muscat.
I was at the game, and as soon as I saw Muscat hit the deck, I knew there was going to be a red-card. I was thinking to myself what a bloody idiot Akoto was for getting himself sent-off, after his team had just won a penatly.
But after watching the replay when I got home, there seemed to be more to the incident than I first thought.
Diogo Ferrieira was unfortunate to get the penalty awarded against him when there seemed to be minimal holding whatsoever. The holding was way off the ball, as well.
I don’t understand, though, why Akoto ran up to the referee even after the penalty had been awarded. His mouth-guard then dropped to the floor, and he pushed Muscat out of the way quite softly to pick it up. The referee has then, I think, over-reacted and sent Akoto off.
But why did Akoto run up to the referee? Why did he un-needingly push Muscat over? And why did it take his manager, Straka, to run across to the other side of the pitch to escort him off?
There must have been something to provoke his actions?
No?
Muscat though, has come out and emphatically denied anything was said to provoke Akoto.
“I was having a bit of banter with him throughout the game. He kept kicking the ball out and I kept reminding him about it,” Muscat said.
“He reacted. He’ll go around making stories up and accusations just because he’s got himself sent off.
“As far as I’m concerned he deserved to get sent off and that’s it. He blatantly pushed me.”
But part of the issue is understood to involve Akoto’s mouth-guard, which was near Muscat’s foot at the time of the incident.
“The mouthguard is involved in the incident somewhere, but there’s probably more to it than just the mouthguard,” North Queensland assistant coach Stuart McLaren said.
“It would have taken a lot for Eric to react like that because he’s a pretty cool, calm and collected customer.
“There’s been something said there that’s provoked a sizeable reaction from a player that from his character and his level of experience normally wouldn’t react like that.
“Before we release any statement or comment, we need to make sure we’re clear on exactly what’s been said before we either make any false accusations, or realise the seriousness of the matter.”
Merrick is adamant nothing was said either.
“We’ve seen there’s a suggestion in the paper that there may be more to this red card incident,” Victory coach Ernie Merrick said.
“We believe that this matter was dealt with accurately by the referee on the spot.
“Kevin has said nothing that would or should warrant any investigation, and from our perspective, we move on.”
So as you can see, Victory and Muscat are denying nothing was said, but what made Akoto react the way he did?
I think this situation has been overblown slightly.
Akoto didn’t even look that angry when he shoved Muscat, he was clearly just trying to pick up his mouth-guard. Akoto was just more pissed at being sent off for nothing than anything else really.
It will be a very interesing few days to say the least regarding this issue, but for now I believe Muscat = Not Guilty

He said something and that smelly sign he made was a bit rude.

he made that smelly gesture a few times after he made a mistake. I’d say if thats all it takes to get under his skin he’ll cop it a bit more over the season from other teams also

Me Clean has always pushed to the limit … it is pity because he is a reasonable player and does not need to descend to the levels he does in games sometimes…

I still think there was provocation. Was it racial? Maybe, because I saw Akoto pointing to his skin as soon as he was sent off. You don’t get a reaction like that from a player unless the culprit says something really insulting. Something doesn’t add up. At least we held off Melbourne and their dirty tactics.

The penalty was stupidly conceded after the MV defender ignored the ref’s prior warning. His impeding the Fury player was plain for all to see. Akoto deserved a yellow but not red for his push on Muscat. “Well done” Muscat for milking it. But Akoto severely worsened his case with his antics after the red card.

your analysis is based on Muscat’s word and that of his coach. Both sides must be considered in any analysis such as this David, and you haven’t done that. Therefore your conclusion is invalid. Muscat’s word is not to be trusted – it’s obvious there is more to it than what he says.
I’m betting Fury are more interested in moving on, but I’m also betting that we’ll see more of this from Muscat this season as MV fail to meet expectations. Let’s hope for a fair hearing on Wednesday and that Muscat gets fair treatment – and sees a few reds on the way – this season.

betty b – David is a Victory fan and this an opinion website.
Whether his conclusions are right or wrong is a matter for debate.
But you also made some interesting observations.
I would nor write Victory off just yet, but watching Muscat in his last season will indeed be interesting.

fair call Art. I’ll keep throwing my bit in for Fury though – I think they need it. I’m a new A League supporter and loving it.

betty b – Fury have become almost everybody’s second favourite team.
The Fury are coming back to Melbourne in Round 5 to play Heart.
I will be in attendance and hope the game is every bit as good as last Sunday’s.

I agree, Art. My second favourite team used to be the Phoenix however now it appears to be the Fury (still have a soft spot for the ‘Nix though).

Muscat, as evil as some people may think he is, is not an idiot. He knows there is a line, and he certainly is not a racist.

Muscat is a master of the psycological aspect of the game. Short of racial abuse I could not care how much he disches out to opposition players to win the match. Well done captain Kev – keep up the good work.

Muscat probably walked along the line with out stepping over, it seems to be his way. He probably implied more than he said or indicated which ended with Akoto over reacting when Muscat stood over his mouth guard. Muscat milked the situation for all its worth, but at the end of the day you cannot push another player like that (even though if every player was sent off for pushing then we would quickly have no one left on the park, just watch every corner).

…. which is why the player should have received a yellow card, not a red card, for the incident. The ref should have accounted for Muscat’s exaggerated reaction and applied a modicum of common sense to the situation, rather than inflaming it.

The true irony is that Muscat probably ended up doing Adelaide a favour. I’m sure their injury ravaged squad will be more than happy to learn Akoto won’t be gracing the field this Saturday.
So who will pen the thank you letter to Kevin I wonder?

Dear Kevin Muscat,
On behalf of all AUFC members and fans I would like to extend you a truely heartfelt thank you for doing your part in removing two of NQF’s better defensive players. I look forward to MH recording their first win in the HAL over MV as well and you clubs continuation at the bottom of the table. Please continue to be old and slow as we enjoy watching the younger and more energetic front lines run you ragged.
Sincerely yours,
General Ashnak

How unusual – Muskie involved in a controversial refereeing decision.
I too at first thought there was something in it for Akoto to react like that – he wouldn’t have pushed Muscat otherwise.
To say Muskie is innocent – well, I wouldn’t agree, but Akoto seems to be a bit hot headed to react like that.
If it was a racist remark then he should make a formal complaint through his club to the FFA and get it dealt with.
We don’t want racism in the A-League or Australian clubs to get a reputation for being racist and turning away some great foreign players who are thinking of coming here.
I’m very impressed with Akoto.
Maybe we can pass him off as a Torres Strait Islander and get him in the Socceroos squad.
