Stunning Wallabies win finally breaks hoodoo

264 Have your say
An 80th minute, 49m penalty goal from Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale has given Australia an amazing 41-39 victory over the Springboks, their first at altitude in South Africa in 47 years.
In perhaps one of the greatest Test matches ever played, which the Wallabies led by a huge margin for the second straight week, Beale turned from villain to hero after two glaring errors had almost cost his side victory.
The Wallabies led 31-6 after 25 minutes and 31-13 after a stellar first half before threatening to implode again in a poor second half.
When Beale threw a pass over the head of five-eighth Quade Cooper near his own goal line and it went dead, the Boks scored off the ensuing scrum to make it 31-30 after 54 minutes.
And when Morne Steyn banged over two 48m penalty goals to make it 36-31, it looked like deja vu for the Australians after last week’s capitulation in Pretoria.
But, with Saia Faingaa in the sin bin for a dangerous tackle, a Drew Mitchell try in the 72nd minute gave the Wallabies hope leading 38-36.
Another Steyn penalty goal in the 77th minute, after Beale had slipped and headbutted a pass from Cooper, made it 39-38 to the Boks.
Australian hopes looked dead until Beale stepped up in the final minute with the most difficult of kicks, 49m out and just 10m in from touch.
He nailed it, the crowd of 38,523 went silent and the Australians berserk as they celebrated one of the greatest victories in their history.
Australia last won on the South African highveld in 1963 in Johannesburg and had not one in Bloemfontein since 1933.
It was just their second win in the Republic in a decade and they retain the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate, while consigning the Boks to last place in the Tri-Nations.
Australia scored five tries to three, with Steyn booting six penalty goals in all.
The start mightn’t have been as spectacular as last week’s with Matt Giteau knocking over a penalty goal in the second minute and Steyn replying four minutes later.
But it was about to get a whole more interesting.
First a Cooper cut-out put Adam Ashley-Cooper into space and Beale finished a classy backline movement of more than 50m.
It was 17-3 after 14 minutes when Cooper picked up the scraps of a Boks defensive lineout gone wrong and sent James O’Connor over.
Obviously still confident, South Africa opted to narrow it to 17-6 with an 18th minute penalty goal and they missed a golden opportunity a minute later when Juan Smith dropped a ball cold in great attacking position.
Australia went out to a 24-6 lead when Stephen Moore burrowed over and, when an electrifying O’Connor run sent Rocky Elsom on a 20m run to the line, the Bloemfontein crowd were left shaking their heads.
It took a remarkable effort from champion lock Victor Matfield on the stroke of halftime to give the home side some hope to cling to, the big man chipping and regathering on the full before sending Jaque Fourie over with a brilliant pass.
The Boks narrowed it to 31-20 six minutes after the break when prop Gurthro Steenkamp crashed over and was awarded a try by TMO Johann Meuwesen.
Australia were under the pump for a second straight week and their errors were mounting.
After de Villiers’ try, the Boks took the lead for the first time in the match with Steyn’s 61st minute penalty goal.
The best, though, was still to come.

Five tries to three says it all … Aussies clear winners, deserved victors. How about that opening half. the young guns too clever for leaden-footed, older Boks. boks second half fightback an aberration; meant nothing; Wallabies won, end result all that matters, and deservedly. quade and morne like cheese and chalk. steyn is merely a kicking flyhalf nothing else. boks are the cocky ones, thinking that their hulking frames are enough to win games. The All Blacks and Oz have given it back in equal measure in the physicality stakes. The boks don’t have ability to box clever. I’ve seen someone say the best match in Test history. What rubbish; it was possibly the best only because the Oz pulled it off against all odds in bloem of all places. the boks are proving to be oneseason wonders. and Oz one-game wonders maybe. neither of these teams can measure up to a complete All Blacks. There are actually pundits wondering about Aussies chances against the ABs. They’re doubting because they know it’s fait accompli, the ABs have the Aussie’s number at moment; it will be foolhardy to bet against an AB win in Sydney. now wouldn’t it.

Do you understand the meaning of the word aberration? same could be said regarding Australia’s win?
The coaches of both these teams need to be seriously concerned – periods of brilliance and then complete disintegration. Does not bode well for the future.

Congratulations to the Wallabies. They put their supporters through a roller coaster ride but came up trumps. They deserved the win after making a huge contribution the week before but coming away with less than they deserved. It was like de ja vu for a while there though wasn’t it? Your boys needed a little bit of luck to prove to themselves that they really are good enough to close out the tight ones.
Deans used his bench this week and Moore starting at hooker was the right move. Faaingas brain freeze could have been costly but the rest of the team stepped up to the mark. Beale was great, then rubbish, then great again. That kick was massive considering where he was and what was at stake.
Enjoy the celebration and the beers tonight Aus!

The first thing everyone should do is give Robbie Deans just a little credit.
A separate point: has there ever been a tournament with as many good matches as this year’s Tri-nations?

2000: Eales’ winning kick in Wellington, the Great Test in Sydney and then Mortlock’s winning kick at the death in Durban to win the title.

Hard to beat em in the high veldt. The wallabies gutsed it out ,made plenty of mistakes but won .Pschologically that Beale kick was HUGE let alone the resulting win .
Ok we have a few tri nations games to go but the world cup is something I wouldn`t bet upon .
WELL DONE OCKERS

Oh and i think the fat twin has played his last test for Australia for the year. If QC got 2 weeks, he will get 4. So that brings Huia Edmonds back into the team, no good for my Beasties but great for Huia

Hey Stubby how is your 0-6 prediction looking now? Any more insightful analysis for us? 2-5 with a chance at 3-6 next week mate and enough shown to make the AB think alot. A pivotal team psychological turning point that was long overdue. Deans finally uses his bench properly and nails the win!

Er – if you bother to look back at my early posts I said that, given the draw this year, if the wallabies don’t win that 1st up game in Brissy they could very well be looking at a 0-6 season … I assume you mean they’re now 2-4 with an outside chance of 3-3 … everything’s possible – but one thing is for certain they AB’s won’t leak tries like this bok does and everything is stacked against the wallabies next week …
all in all an excellent result for the wallas – I certainly know how it feels as Manawatu got yesterday – but I certainly can see where wallaby fans can get carried away esp when their media make statements such as this ..”In perhaps one of the greatest Test matches ever played” .. excellent result to win at altitude – but not one of the best games ever

Congrats Wallabies – good win! Heart breaking for me but at least we got back into the game from that terrible first 35mins.
From a Bok perspective, I thought some of the older players stepped up well, Matfield was all over the place and John Smits work rate was huge! And how about that one handed catch!
The inside backs played well, I thought Habana, Pieterson and F Steyn wern’t great, and what is up with the Bok defense that everytime a team gets it to the wing, they have an overlap?

Very gracious, Lee.
Frans Steyn is a dope. He doesn’t have the concentration or temperament for 15. Agree about Habana & Pietersen.

Lee…it is Habana…he cost us 17 points in the first half…he consistently comes off his wing, 3 times yesterday, last week and the one before when Mcaw scored in the corner, when Aplon came on it tightened up immediately down that wing. He has been playing something shocking.
Well done to Australia, very good first half performance, I thought it was a great game, you guys should give them some credit, a win is a win, but hell the margin from you lot tearing them to pieces or lauding them wasn’t much….Flip VanderMerve….you bugger…Wayne Barnes was very good I thought, no complaints there.
Oh well, as for us (SA), what a wanked tri nations…please DIv, leave the old okes at home for the EOYT and give the youth…LAMBIE, DeJongh, Hougaard, Van den Heever, Basson etc, etc, etc game time

Mampara-couple of points;Agree Habana is well below his best but thought it disgraceful to hear him booed for just receiving the ball during the 1st half! I believe a combo of factors have resulted in his lack of confidence-the poor quality ball RSA wingers receive and a dated stategy that reduces wings to kick-chasers/receivers being a large part of it;it isn’t his fault he is selected each week and imo if he turned up wearing the “canary yellow” of Australia right now you might see him back somewhere near his best in no time;-a once great servant of RSA rugby being treated that way is appalling.
On Wayne Barnes;I enjoyed his more lenient approach-he generally let the game flow and I liked how he identified the burglars at the breakdown too-very informative. In earlier matches-surely JP Pietersen would have been binned for twice entering the ruck from the wrong side in 2 mins-the 2nd time on his own goal-line!

Totally agree about the booing of Habana. I cringed when I heard it.
Also thought that Victor & John, as the elder statemen, stepped-up as they needed to. Both played extremely well and will no doubt put the selectors in 2 minds.
Highly enoyable game of Rugby. Well played Bokke. Well done Wallabies.

I think O’onnor has him out foxwd, because he plays his wing game slightly infield and gives himself space on both sides. Habana is struggling to defend against him. Haban is a confidence player who depends on quick wide ball and he isn’t getting it.

Tim I almost did the same…BUT I didn’t. Forget the bitter sweet mate. SA were lucky to get the lead back. BUT when they got in front they tried to cynically run the clock down. Unfortunately for SA and the ‘never pleased’ in Australia the Wallabies had too many points to lose the game due to scoring 4 first half tries.
The worst part was there was plenty of time for ads after the game but not for post game speeches. Rocky spoke well.
I agree with Frank. Losing after posting 31 first half points would have been devastating. That was a very important win.
Of course there needs to be other very important wins like the one against the ‘flukey’ team from New Zealand next week.
We need to start thinking we are as good or better than the TFNZ. That is where the winning starts. So where are you from Cinematic? Really Cinners you should troll elsewhere. No-one is calling the Aussies world beaters. We are just relieved to finally pull off a close win against a favoured opposition in a rugby graveyard. Isn’t there a parade somewhere in your country that you can rain on?
BTW we have solved one motivation problem when things get tight near the end of a game we just need to hook a front rower. Faingaas departure had the soul -steeling effect that we watchers have been begging for for a year at least.
Well done you good things! Now for that flukey team from NZ.

hmm Damo…this is Aus’s problem, sure they have got a win and a good performance in them but the next week??????
Third game in as many weeks, travelling in the wrong direction, you loose a day, Nz rested…….Its gona be a hiding, for 10 on th trot against the “flukey team”
