The 2010 Tri Nations is over. The rugby on display was superb and the audience heartily satisfied by the spectacle.
With some exceptional performances and a fair dosage of nail-biting drama that a Hollywood writer would have struggled to script better, we now take a look back, pass judgment and take stock of the heroes and villains of the Tri Nations.
Best Kick – Kurtley Beale. He had no idea he was the kicker – he boosted Wallaby supporter morale and booted himself into the history books.
Best Line Break – Maa Nonu, whose one sock run was not only brilliant but led to a massive victory for the All Blacks.
Most poignant moment – A shattered and crushed John Smit on his knees.
Best blooper – Kurtly Beale’s 20 meter Falcon – pure comedy.
Best hero – Richie McCaw. The most caps in All Black history, tries, tackles and inspiration. Hated by many, cherished by New Zealand, McCaw is one of the finest ambassadors of the game. His paper mache school visit is worth YouTubing.
Best villain – Bakkies almost took this as did Giteau’s boot. And there was a fantastic eye gouge by a Wallaby on a Wallaby last Saturday. But Peter De Villiers wins this one after a long, hard fall from his high horse. You take the blue pill Peter- the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland .
Best actor award – Robbie Deans for his enthusiastic singing of the Australian anthem. That’s traitor talk Robbie. His other teary eyed performances in the after match interview were worth mentioning as well.
Worst missed yellow card – Jimmy Cowan backwards head butt into Bakkies Bothas forehead. Jimmy gets a free beer after the match and Bakkies goes to jail for a very long time.
Most overrated player – Giteau’s loss of form and the nauseous, endless headlines for Quade Cooper were close, as was Genia’s complacent work at halfback. But Cruden gets the cake for his very mediocre run on.
Best coach – 2010 the year that Graham smiled. After a battering by the Boks in 2009, Henry has well and truly lifted the game and his team to a new level.
Worst coach – PDV showcased off his lunacy with reds under the bed, vast conspiracies to take over the world and little black clad men from outer space filtered through his troubled mind and spurted out for all to see.
Whinger of the year – The Bok fans almost took this as a group award, but Rocky Elsom was downright embarrassing in his ill timed and ill conceived harassing of the refs. They are not liking him… and his bad loser after match speeches do the team an injustice.
Best player of the tournament – Richie was close, Pocock was there as was Juan Smith – but Israel Dagg is the dark horse that takes this closely contested battle for his simply breathtaking brilliant runs and tries. Remarkable for a sub.
Try of the tournament – goes to Israel Dagg for his 5 Boks can’t touch me, jaw dropping try that was admired with head shakes of disbelief by the Boks themselves.
Worst player of the tournament – Bryan Habana. From missed tackles, bad kicks, dropped balls, lousy positioning, 2010 was a nightmare for Habana who went from spectacular to being booed by his own crowd.
Team of the tournament – Wallabies grew, South Africa imploded. The All Blacks won every single match they played, racking up the most table points and the most points overall in the history of the Tri Nations. On top of that they have won the last 15 games in a row, scoring 51 tries to 15 with an average scoreline of 32-15.
Love them or despise them, they are the 2010 team of the tournament.

Stash, good article.
I would agree with the comment about Read and Kaino having break-out years, Read especially.
Missed (overlooked) yellow card of the year: Tony Woodcock for a late of the ball hit on S Faingaa right in front of J Kaplan…please put your hand in your pocket, sir!
Most missed player of the year: Close one, early on I would have said Digby Ioane, but JO’C filled that gap nicely, so it comes down to either Heinrick Brussow or Fourie De Preez, without whom the Bokke looked well of their game. My vote goes to Brussow after watching McCaw’s and Pocock’s influence on the games. Gio Aplon was not considered for this award because he was actually available for selection, just poorly used by his coach.
Generally speaking, this has been a pretty exciting 3N despite the lopsided table. The ABs won 6 from 6 while the Bokke won only 1 from 6 with the Wallabies just faring a little better. However, if you think back to the last 4 games, all of them were pretty close and featured either nail-biting or come from behind victories.
I do hope the Hong Kong game doesn’t take the sheen of that.

What about chicken hop cooper?
Where was this article after last years 3N?
McCaw to get the cheat of the comp award, and all the refs for changing the breakdown laws from game to game.
Perhaps the boo award could go to carter who handed the kicking rains over after 5 missed attempts?
Smit on his knees that’s funny, almost as funny as the headlines in NZ last time around “McCaw ready to self combust!”
Missed yellow, almost every All black in the team…
16 games in a row now for the Blacks, looks like the new record is about to be set?

Chicken hop Cooper?
I wrote here a while back that I reckon it’s the ghostly finger of John Hopoate past that makes him do that!

Love yer work Stash – well done.
May I respectfully proffer a Controlling the Media Cycle award category?
I blame John Eales for starting what follows.
He used say after every loss “We’ve taken something out of that.” Every time he’d say that. And Greg Growden would race off to type it up and print the profundity of it all. The fans would read the Captain’s words and be well pleased.
In any given week this year the Camp Wallaby’s media manager would send one of the lads out clutching their Engaging the Media Script:
* Week One – Sharpe, “I’m gutted”. Here’s your pay packet, son. It’s been half gutted too, for this week’s effort.
* Week Two – Two-Fathers, “I blame myself” – what’s he fishing for? A tilt headed “It’s not your fault, dear”?
* Week Three – Cooper, “I’m filthy”. “Why?” “Because that’s what it says on this piece of paper they gave me to read out, they spelded filfffy rong but.”
* Week Four (on tour) – O’Connor, “I miss my mummy”
* Week Five – Beale, “Gees I enjoyed those couple of breaks I made last weekend, and I didn’t even lose the ball at the end. That’s a whole seven in the last 6 months, good eh? Umm, remind me, what was that “tackling” thing about again?”
* Week Next – repeat cycle as above
I long to hear a real post match interview, proper like – “Yeah, dirty rotten mongrels – beat us again!” or, better still, “Gees that felt good, eh? Just like last week and the week before that!”

The real media report
Elsom “Damn, we are absolutely nowhere! I have been told by this uptight Kiwi bloke to keep telling you media guys that we are improving and getting better. Somehow he believes if we all keep saying it the Aussie public will believe it and start to think losing is just as good as winning. It appears to be working! I just thinking to myself, why did I leave the big bucks in Europe where I kept winning to come play with these so called professional athletes and get hammered each week in ever new and exciting ways”.

Henry “I am so happy we smashed the Boks this year! Last year was very embarressing, first the French and then those giant africans. Winning the worldcup was starting to look like a tough prospect. If I lose again I will have to move to Aussie like the rest of us Kiwis who can’t get a job. But now, bring on 2011. Thank god that Wallaby mob with their wee tiny backs and soft as marshmellow forwards are always around, they always make the me and the AB’s look like rockstars!”.

Best Player of the Tournament – Richie McCaw – daylight to second- best captain, tactisian, speaker, leader, game winner (those who call him are cheat I wish he was a cheat on our side but I have full respect for his ability – but such calls are rubbish and childish). No one else comes to mind because only the ABs showed consistency so Brad Thorn, Carter etc. maybe
Teams improving alla Wallabies does not win games. They are all tests and the result is just a measure of that game.
Again most consistent ABs – worlds best, certainly number 1 even if they dont win the WC round robin.
Worst media – Aus Press and commentators.

Got to agree. Brian Habanna took very little part in the contest for the ball unless forced to. He just hovered waiting for the chance to intercept. No where near the star I saw in South Africa in 2008.
Another former super star on the way out (like Giteau).
