Geoff Ogilvy heads into Saturday’s third round of the Australian Open with an ideal chance to get his hands on the Stonehaven Cup for the first time.
The Victorian has long stated his desire to win his national title and the 2006 US Open champion will take a one-shot lead over compatriot Matt Jones into round three.
Ogilvy carded a seven-under par 65 on Friday to reach 11-under for the tournament, a round bettered only by Jones’s eight-under 64 late in the day.
First-round leader Matt Griffin is in outright third on nine-under, two strokes ahead of John Senden, Paul Sheehan and American Dudley Hart.
Runner-up behind Senden at the 2006 Australian Open at Royal Sydney, Ogilvy has another chance at The Lakes course this weekend.
“It is a tournament that we all want to win as Australians,” he said.
“I am playing well. I played well at Victoria (finishing tied eighth at the Australian Masters), but I didn’t make many putts.
“I didn’t walk away from there with any disappointment at all.
“I knew I was playing well and I practised pretty hard the last couple of weeks.”
Despite his limited playing schedule these days, Greg Norman fired a second-round three-under 69 to move to one-under and comfortably make the cut by two shots, while defending champion Adam Scott’s 66 took him to three-under overall.
But some big names were left on the scrapheap.
Two-time Open winner Aaron Baddeley and Americans John Daly and Fred Couples all finished on two-over par to miss the weekend by a solitary stroke.
