Gold Coast Suns seal deal with Charlie Dixon

The “mentor” for Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett – youngster Charlie Dixon – has been rewarded with a contract extension at the Gold Coast Suns.
The Cairns-bred key forward has signed on for another year, ensuring he will be with the AFL newcomers until the end of 2012.
Dixon may not be a household name just yet, but the 20-year-old was handpicked by Suns coach Guy McKenna to take Ablett under his wing when the former Geelong premiership winner came to the club.
In what the Suns call “reverse mentoring”, the youngsters who had helped build the Gold Coast’s culture during the past 12 months were responsible for passing that onto the high-profile recruits.
A former Queensland under-18 representative, Dixon joins No.1 draft pick David Swallow and Zac Smith as the third Suns young gun to commit to an extended deal.
“I’ve been at the Gold Coast Suns pretty much from the start,” Dixon said.
“I love being here, I feel close to the players and really respect the coaches and I want to give myself every chance of enjoying some real success with the group.”
Dixon is still recovering from a back injury and is working towards getting back in the main training group.

Dixon & Smith both impressive for Gold Coast in the past, big step up in 2011 though.

At last some proper footy news with the Inglis drama and those photos slowly fading away – The Inaugral NEAFL draw for both conferences is out for the 2011.
Really like the way the Northern Conference has placed some promo comments on each round of their draw.

Apparently there has been player movement already with three players from the Cairns League signing with one of the Canberra clubs. The players were approached by the Canberrans who offered them good deals.
The ACT Club which has fulltime staff and good facilities (Sounds like WAFL level stuff) was a big factor in the move and the money of course – The players involved though were going to try and ignore the Canberra winter.
The footy bosses would be pleased with this outcome – Spreading the talent and the game around.

I know a lot about football in Canberra, there is some good money because of licenced clubs with pokies (at some clubs), but the standard would be below WAFL by a fair degree, a combined team may be competetive.
Hopefully the comp can regain it’s former glories of the 70′s early 80′s.
The AFL/GWS will be putting plenty of resources into the area.

It’s interesting comparing the birth of the Bears 24 years ago, and the altogether different preparation the Suns have had:

Terry Wallace has just set himself up on Twitter, he calls himself TheListManager and describes himself as football’s “most trusted list Management expert”. Big call! A pity Richmond wasn’t a beneficiary of such expertise!
One of his first tweets on what GWS should be aiming to do list wise: “GC set example. GWS must build for a premiership 2016-19 window, so only players that fit that build should be looked at.”
