Who’ll be the understudy to Carter?

It was a question posed early on by many: who will fill the No. 10 jersey should Daniel Carter be unavailable during the rugby World Cup? While there are a bunch of contenders, the answer to the question is still as unclear as it was six months ago.
The obvious choice would be the Highlanders marquee signing Colin Slade.
He has a very good all round game and possesses the ability to kick, run and pass effectively. Despite a lack of experience at Test match level, he controlled the second half in last years third Bledisloe Cup Test well and showed he has the head for the game.
But it may not be as simple as that. Slade has already broken his jaw twice this season and after playing only a handful of games, will not return for the rest of the Super Rugby season.
He also carries a groin injury that could be a long term problem if he doesn’t get it right. This could be enough to make him unavailable for the All Blacks come World Cup time.
So who to then? Stephen Donald, Luke McAlister, Aaron Cruden and Stephen Brett are the four obvious contenders.
All have their merits, but none bring the same confidence that Carter and Slade bring to the table.
Of these four, Donald has the most experience in the No. 10 jumper at test match level. He has an impressive record at provincial and Super Rugby level, but for one reason or another has failed to bring this to the international stage.
In Super Rugby he is a dangerous runner, a reasonable kicker and a good director of a dangerous backline.
However, Test match rugby is a whole new ball game and there have been numerous players that have been superstars at lower levels that have struggled to cope at the higher level. Donald certainly falls into this category, playing some truly forgettable games in the black jersey.
The most likely reason behind this comes in the pressure of filling the boots of Daniel Carter, arguably the best back in the world. Whatever the reason, it is essential to pick someone who performs at this level, regardless of their form at lower levels, something that the three wise men seem to have overlooked in recent years.
The second candidate mentioned was Luke McAlister.
He has 30 Test caps making him the most experienced of the four contenders, however most of these caps come wearing the No. 12 jersey which doesn’t always translate to being comfortable wearing 10.
The main plus for McAlister is his kicking. He is without doubt the most consistent goal kicker of the contenders which could be the difference between a win and a loss in a close game.
He can be dangerous on attack, but can tend to take wrong options, often kicking good attacking ball. Likewise, he can be found wanting in defence at times, going too high in tackles, shown by the number of times he has suffered from broken jaws.
The next contender comes in the youngster Aaron Cruden.
After being proclaimed as the next big thing after a stellar tournament with the New Zealand Under 20′s, Cruden was promoted into the Manawatu ITM Cup side and then the Hurricanes.
He was then given an All Blacks call up for last year’s Tri-Nations. At times he showed glimpses of the talent he has been said to possess. But the simple facts are that it’s just too big a step up from playing under 20′s to playing international rugby.
The speed and physicality of the game was where he struggled the most and his tactical kicking has been average at best.
So on to our fourth and final candidate, Stephen Brett.
Brett is the only one of these four to have never played for the All Blacks and many people may question his inclusion on this list.
But his recent form has been the best of any of the contenders for the position. He has a very good running game, which he has used to put the dangerous Blues backline into space and has proved hard to stop. Again, his kicking is suspect and his inclusion in the team would mean another goal kicker would have to be present.
So then, who to take? At this stage Slade would be the man provided he is available.
But what if he’s not?
None of the four men’s cases bring the confidence one would want from an All Black first five.
It seems unlikely that they will go back to Cruden and Brett has confirmed that the All Blacks coaches have not talked to him, indicating he isn’t in the mix.
Therefore it comes down to McAlister and Donald.
Personally, I think McAlister edges out Donald due to having a better kicking game, but I think the All Black selectors will go with Donald.
Donald has been tried before and while not always successful, at least has some experience at Test match level. In the past, the selectors have fallen back on Donald when unsure who to go with and it wouldn’t be a surprise to seem them do it again.
Only this time, don’t expect them to use him unless absolutely necessary.
At a time where New Zealand rugby is so strong, this is the one position that they are struggling to fill. In the four years since the last World Cup there hasn’t been one obvious candidate put their hand up and should Colin Slade not be available, every person in New Zealand will be praying that Daniel Carter doesn’t succumb to injury between now and October.

You left out Brown. If you choose Carter and Brown then you would put another 10 cover on the bench in case Brown ran out out of puff. McAlister could cover 10 and 12. May need to take a forward off the bench. Richie or another loosie can play eighty.

I reckon Ted will pick Luke Mcalister because he can kick and will fit easily into the All Black game pattern.

As always a good analysis JC – but I do think you’ve over egged Slade … yes he has talent and attributes but in reality he’s not even proven at super rugby level .. …. this year was going to be his big trial for the back up gig and the times he’s been on the field this season for the Highlanders he’s hardly been the rock solid option everyone thought he might be … of course he’s hardly had a clear run of games given his injuries but he was decidedly average in those games he did front for – I really can’t see the selectors taking a punt on this bloke if he can’t get back on the field and put in a solid number of SR games .. which by all accounts he won’t
That Sydney test appearance I think has blinded at lot of people – those hoping to find the answer to the unanswerable question of finding another Carter – he got the arm chair ride in that game in the final 20 mins when the forwards finally decided to wake up and Weepu wasn’t there trying to do everything and achieving little … from memory I don’t reckon Cruden got 1 decent set phase ball without Weepu or Nonu getting in the road during his time on the pitch .. yet he carried the can for a sub par performance of the forwards and the senior players around him …
last weekend Cruden displayed what the selectors saw in him – given a stable platform he can create massive opportunities for himself and his outside backs and his kicking game isn’t as bad as some make out … but like you I don’t think his time yet – next year onward (when I think he’ll team up with Rennie at the Chiefs) he’ll start to fulfil his promise
Glad to see you didn’t include Brown in this analysis – he’s too old – like you if he stay’s fit I think McAllister will fill the roll (with Weepu as the emergency) … he is starting to find the form of when he first appeared on the NZ scene

Pick the best goal-kicker (probably McCalister), there should be enough class and experience In the team to pick up the slack in general play.

Cruden is erratic. If that kick missed we would be talking about all those stupid errors and poor choices taken by the canes in the second half. As you say he is not AB material. Fair summary on the other lot. I pray for McAlister to find his mojo again. Actually I think Slade is well proven at S15 level as he very rarely put a foot wrong in anybposition against any opposition when at the crusaders. But as you say, unlikely to get his chance. Not Donald. Pleeeeease.

McAlister is probably the form player right now but only because of his kicking from hand. The real question is what do they do next year if Carter takes up a French offer. Most of those guys (plus Mike Delany) are heading overseas. In that case, it really would come down to Slade or Cruden. Something to consider perhaps.

OJ, I’ll throw Robbie Robinson into that mix of youth too, and I reckon between the three of them, there’s your future.
Cruden played well last weekend, I reckong that’s the best game I’ve seen him play in a good while, but Slade has been class all year until he was injured.
Actually, I wonder if Slade might head back to the Crusaders next year if Carter has another gap year??

Dwin Stubbie said | May 4th 2011 @ 9:19am | Report comment
Slade has been class all year – really Brett ? … there were grave misgivings about his performances prior to injury in the ealry rounds of SR – he was losing the ball in contact, getting stripped of possession, taking the wrong options … he really wasn’t showing that he was the locked in alternative that everyone believed .. the hype (or more likely hope) from some quarters really glossed over an average start to the season … the injuries didn’t help with being able to string games together – but up until the last broken jaw it wasn’t evident that he had the position sown up ..
Neither he or Cruden have had enough time to establish their games at SR level – so it would be a big ask to take either into a W/cup … barring injury McAllister is the best bet
As for the future – yip Robertson may be in the mix … but I’d also throw the kid from Taranaki in as well – Barrett – if he gets a few more run ons this year with the Hurricanes, another good NPC and then a full super season – he’ll be well placed for a call up

He was certainly playing better when he was injured, than the start of the season Darwin, I do agree with you, but I’ve been pretty impressed overall. He’s certainly been one of the reasons I’ve watched more of the Highlanders this year than I think I’ve even done.
McAlister’s been playing well in the last six weeks or so especially, and actually I like how he and Brett are combining as a 10-12 unit; they seem to compliment each other nicely. Though I’m not sure either would play as well in the other’s position, if that makes sense..
(I’ll keep an eye out for this Barrett kid too, thanks for the tip)
**As an aside, does anyone know who Cruden is tackling in the photo? Is it Richard Kingi??

You obviously do which is why you took the time out of your already busy schedule to express your very personal and valid opinion. Just as the rest of the people who post here have their own very valid opinion.
The reasons why Kiwis post on this forum is because the fates of New Zealand and Australian rugby are intwined its one of the great links between our nations.
I’d call you a league supporter but I think most of them are pro-NZ (at least Pro-Warriors) so I’m going to make the assumption your an AFL supporter.
The chip on the shoulder of AFL supporters because of Rugby League taunting about having no viable international competition is growing its a bad sad really when AFL should accept the fact its loved in Australia and the rest of the world moves along as normal
