The Australia vs New Zealand ANZAC Test match kicks off tonight as the Kangaroos look to restore their superiority over the Kiwis, with the Benji Marshall-led side now holding the Four Nations and the World Cup over Australia.
The Kiwis have a poor record in the Anzac Test match, and often these games have been blowouts to Australia.
Apart from winning the very first game in 1998, they haven’t really troubled Australia, although the Kangaroos only won 12-8 in Melbourne last year in a closer affair.
The Kiwis seem to do better over longer stretches, where tournaments allow them to gel, particularly after a post-season where Australia’s NRL stars often appear to find it difficult to continue their form.

What was up with SKD? Running over the touchline, throwing the ball away, running sideways. He’s obviously caught Roosteritis. Same goes Moi Moi.
The gamble on Duffie didn’t pay off. He was all over the show on defence. Should have named SKD on the wing and used Matai.

Cheers, not a game full of highlights, especially not the Kiwis. Work to do before Origin. Some players all class though; Lockyer, Slater as always, and Yow Yeh impressed.

If New South Wales wants to beat Qld they should follow a similar blueprint to the way new zealand play. When you think of it, Australia scored 2 tries from dropped ball, another from a bomb.
Also Australias side is dominated by queenslanders.
New Zealand weren’t that far away. Don’t forget New Zealand has won three major finals in ’05, ’08, ’10.
New South Wales last origin series win was 2005.
Food for thought

Paul Gallen the likely Man of the Match, great performance and NSW will be hopeful with the performance.

Australia keeping up pressure late into the game… three minutes to go here as attention turns to the City Country game – no spoilers but Soward has limped off.
Just as I type that, a good run by the Kiwis started by Marshall, a great kick by Foran and Hohaia races through the pack to score. Marshall misses the two pointer but it’s all over. A positive finish for NZ with the final score 20-10. Great try.

Somehow, Yoh Yeh smashes Benji Marshall, even though Yoh Yeh has the ball in end. Pretty spectacular.

Yow Yeh drops a bomb and what could have been a flashy try. Knock on, Kiwis get a chance. Rumours that Australia added extra grease to the cheese and bacon pies sent to the Kiwi dressing room just before the game. Explains the drop balls.

NZ have shot themselves in the foot all night. Another turn-over and Idris rams his away over the line. Massive unit, impossible to stop. Kangaroos skipping away now. Another try to a debutante, Idris with his first of what could be many for the young fella.
Thurston hits the post, and it’s 20-6 and all over for the Kiwis.

Can’t the Kiwi hold onto the ball in a tackle? Why don’t they just score them for us?

Billy Slater cleans up another NZ knock-on and streaks away to score for the Australians with just 12 minutes to go. Ben Hannant does well to pick the ball up and offload to a flying Slater who can’t be run down. Slater’s second for the night. Thurston puts Australia in control at 16-6.

Ouch very nasty there. Thurston puts up a little kick, and Jason Nightingale leaps high to grab the ball, but Idris has taken the legs in the air, causing Nightingale to fall very awkwardly on his upper body. Idris penalised but seemingly no malice.

More attacks from Australia, but NZ holding on. Hodges has a hell of a fend on him.

Yow Yeh might have scored here – video ref – no, a diving effort off a Hodges kick through but the ball beats Yow Yeh and Hohaia over the line.

Last ten minutes have been a little more scrappy, some dropped balls.. especially by Hohaia who is strangely one of Australia’s best!

Back after HT and the Kiwis mounting plenty of pressure on the Aus line but defence holds. Fien puts in a nice grubber behind the line to get a goal line dropout but no chasers points at a poor play. 47m gone.

Wow excitement on half time, Lockyer capitalised on a mistake and threw a long ball to Idris who stormed for the line but was well tackled over the sideline by Lance Hohaia. Half time: 10-6.

Great try to the well-supported Kiwis, a Benji Marshall strip on Thurston saw possession switch on 30m out from the Kangaroos line and a strong run to bust through by Lewis Brown to put Matt Duffie over. Marshall converts 10-6 and it’s game on.

Why is this at Skilled Park and not Suncorp?

Tristan Rayner said | 8:31pm | Report comment
Good question – Skiled seems to be hosting more games over Suncorp, including the All Stars v Indigenous game… the AFL is at the Gabba on Saturday, and the Broncos play the storm on the same night.

Lockyer pushes the ball to the right on the Kiwi line and creates an overlap, Yow Yeh scores in the corner with twenty gone. Looked easy. Jharal Yow Yeh with a try on debut, Thurston misses the conversion with a curling kick.
