It’s Queensland vs New South Wales in the first State of Origin game tonight as Queensland look to again crush the new-look Blues, with captain Darren Lockyer embarking on his final Origin series.
State of Origin Game 1 result:
Queensland 16 – New South Wales 12
While Queensland traditionally go into State of Origin as the underdogs, they’ve firmly stamped their class with five straight series wins. Even worse for NSW, the series features two home games at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Since 2003, NSW has won only four of 11 games played at “The Cauldron” of Suncorp, and two of these wins came while maestro Andrew Johns held the reins at halfback.
Most recently, the Blues won a dead-rubber in 2009 in Brisbane, but were torn apart by the Maroons 34-6 in game two at Suncorp.
However, is there a sliver of hope for the Blues: since State of Origin became a best of three in 1982, Queensland have never won the opening match of a series in three consecutive years, having dropped the ball in four attempts.
NSW coach Ricky Stuart has picked a team tailored to his game plan, while Queensland coach Mal Meniga picked a squad largely similar to previous years, but has lost international centres Greg Inglis and Justin Hodges.

There’s about an hour before kickoff and wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing, I hope your beer is cold, the heater is on, and either you’ve firmly jumped on the Queensland bandwagon or are sticking up for the under-(-cattle)dogs – the Blues!
A pic from the ground, with the U-16s origin being played – NSW won by two points: NSW 18, QLD 16
Game 1 will start soon.

The telecast on Nine has started with the usual fire up messages, a bit of a historical look at the series, raising the level of hyperbole to all time levels. Kenny Sutcliffe has been wheeled out, the doyen of introducing coverage.

James Blunt comes on to er belt(?) out a few tracks to rev up the crowd. Not sure if it’s working, although the ladies are a little bit keen. There’s a particularly over exuberant bassist too.

Plenty of talking points as the game starts, with Ennis on the bench as coach Stuart looks to use him as an impact player, and talk around Soward living up to the hype and coping with the pressure and frenetic pace of Origin. Gasnier is back in the fold and will be looking to link up with first-timer Akuila Uate who will be fun to watch.

Phil Gould delivers his traditional pre-game stirring oratory with the 360° spinning vision, plenty of passion there.

Greg Inglis and Billy Moore showing off the State of Origin trophy to the Queensland crowd as the Blues run out on to the pitch. Soward has blue headgear. The Blues wait for Queensland…
Now, here come the Maroons, to a huge roar.
