Bernard Tomic has beaten Xavier Malisse in straight sets at Wimbledon, cruising through to win 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. The 18 year old dismantled the world number 47 to advance to the quarter finals and set up a likely match-up with Novak Djokovic.

The Beligan Malisse struggled early, with the 158th-ranked Tomic taking the first set in just 21 minutes.

Malisse rallied in the second to improve his play, however Tomic continued his strong service games and winners across the court, grabbing his break-point chances to win the set in 33 minutes.

The final set continued to go as planned for Tomic, serving a strong 77 per cent of first serves in and making just two unforced errors to wrap up the match in an hour and 21 minutes.

Tomic told reporters post-match the game was “the biggest thing that ever happened to me”, but it will be all uphill from here as he moves into the final eight at Wimbledon in 2011.

Tomic is the first qualifier to reach the quarter finals at Wimbledon since Vladimir Voltchkov in 2000. The last 18 year old to reach the quarters was Goran Ivanisevic, who went on to the semi-finals.

Tomic defeated Djokovic in a friendly exhibition match at Kooyong in 2010, but the stakes this time around couldn’t be any higher.
