Western Bulldogs forward Justin Sherman has been banned for four AFL games for racially vilifying a Gold Coast player.

Sherman has also apologised to the undisclosed Suns player after attending conciliation meetings over the incident in Saturday’s match at Metricon Stadium.

He has been ordered to attend an education program and pay $5000 to a charity chosen by the Suns.

The incident occurred in Saturday’s match at Metricon Stadium which the Bulldogs won by 22 points.

The Suns player accepted Sherman’s apology and agreed that, together with the sanction handed to Sherman, it was an acceptable way to conclude the matter.

The AFL and the two clubs have been barred from identifying the Gold Coast player involved.

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said both clubs had supported the conciliation process and the AFL remained strongly opposed to racial vilification.

“The AFL will not accept any form of vilification in our game and will continue to act strongly and immediately in this area,” Anderson said.

“I want to acknowledge the way in which the Gold Coast Suns and the Western Bulldogs have addressed this issue with the utmost importance, and also to acknowledge Justin Sherman for taking responsibility for his actions.”

Sherman joined the Bulldogs from Brisbane this season.

He is eligible to play for their VFL affiliate Williamstown while serving the AFL ban which covers rounds 15-18.
