State of Origin game 3 result: Queensland Maroons 34 – NSW Blues 24. Queensland have won the State of Origin decider 34 – 24 in a high scoring finish to the 2011 Origin series.
Queensland applied much of the early pressure to the Blues, and controlled the ball perfectly. Within 16 minutes, the Maroons were on the board.
Hot on attack, Billy Slater got away a miracle offload to Johnathan Thurston who ran the ball to the line before putting in a short grubber to a flying Greg Inglis who grabbed the ball and touched down on the far left corner. The video ref looked, but saw nothing but perfection from the Maroons.
Thuston duly converted to give Queensland a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.
Queensland continued to apply pressure, and while the New South Wales line held firm for five drop-outs, finally the line cracked as Slater slipped a ball to Sam Thaiday who charged over the line.
Thurston converted from right in front to send Queensland to a 12-0 lead after 26 minutes. A landslide was beckoning.
On resumption, Queensland applied further pressure, and courtesy of Cameron Smith, put more points on the board. With the Maroons on the Blues’ line, Inglis played the ball and Smith bored his way over from dummy-half. Thurston converted for an 18-0 lead after 32 minutes.
Jharal Yow-Yeh then took advantage of a cruel bounce, after the Maroons kicked a grubbering ball, which bounced off Minichiello’s legs. Yow-Yeh seized upon the chance to dive over for the fourth for the night, and suddenly Queensland were 24-0 ahead after dead-eye Thurston converted again.
Needing points, New South Wales were desperate leading into the break, and some desperation football saw the Blues keep the ball alive. A loose kick saw Lockyer fumble as he grasped for the ball. The Blues pounced, with Minichiello diving over.
New South Wales were on the board against the run of play, and Soward converted for a 24-6 deficit.
From the restart, and just moments before half-time, the Blues ran the ball wide. Gasnier combined with Uate for the big Fijian to dive over and resuscitate the Blues’ chances.
Soward missed a difficult conversion, but the Blues were back in the game at 24-10 at half-time.
After half-time, the Blues came out on attack but the halves failed to direct traffic and the forwards struggled to make yards.
A key penalty was given away by Paul Gallen for a strip, and Queensland were on the attack in the 63rd minute. Some clever outside-inside play put Billy Slater into a gap to set Queensland on their way to a sixth Origin series. Smith converted for a 30-10 lead over the Blues.
Another penalty was awarded to Queensland after Gallen attacked the legs of Lockyer after he kicked. Greg Inglis showed incredible strength and power to storm his way over the line, carrying three men and managing to get the ball over the line.
Smith missed the conversion, but the Maroons were now 24 points ahead with less than ten minutes on the clock.
The NSW Blues immediately attacked, and some half-breaks and good support play put Jarryd Hayne through a gap and over the line.
As Hayne crossed the line, Cameron Smith tackled him with his knees, thereby giving away an eight-point try – the try plus an additional penalty conversion. Smith was placed on report and Soward made no mistake from in front to boost the Blues to 34-18.
Queensland were then denied a try in the 74 minute, with Ben Hannant storming over the line. However, Hannant was initially held-up before team mate Thaiday pushed him and the ball down.
The video referee was consulted, and it was ruled that Thaiday drove Hannant over the line, with NSW handed the ball.
The final try was scored by New South Wales, as Hayne and Morris broke the defence down the left side of the field. Uate found Bird wide on the right who dived over, but the try flattered the Blues, with Soward converting to put them just ten points behind – 34-24.
The Blues continued to attack to the final whistle, but were never going to win after failing to score first in the second-half, and after giving the Maroons a 24 points head start early in the match.
Darren Lockyer celebrated his final Origin game with his Queensland teammates, thanking his team, the crowd and his coaches for the win and his stellar Origin career.
Johnathan Thurston hurt his leg badly in the second half, with reports he has done his AC ligament, thereby putting him out for the season.
QUEENSLAND 34 (G Inglis 2 B Slater C Smith S Thaiday J Yow Yeh tries J Thurston 4 C Smith goals) bt NSW 24 (G Bird J Hayne A Minichiello A Uate tries J Soward 4 goals) at Suncorp Stadium.
Referee: Tony Archer, Shayne Hayne.
Crowd: 52,498. Queensland win the series 2-1.

When Ray said “I am disapoited at some of the ref’s desition’s” I think Ray meant that the destitution the referees suffer due to poor wages upsets him,
Where he said “there was to many high tackly’s aloud” that refers I believe, to men wearing their trousers higher than they should, showing their high tackles and making noise about it, and these people should be repressed as there are too many about.
Where he says “to many alkoud and penality given un duley” I feel he may be referring to the Al-Koud family who are numerous but suffer unfair oppression.
The last comment I am unsure about, but I think his whole post was meant to go on the qanda twitter site.

Paul Gallen… whinge whinge whinge.. .. complaining about those, ‘couple of’ umpiring decisions that supposed to have went against them .. ‘shocking’ he said.. bad bad attitude.. bad sportmanship.. perhaps he should have looked at the way he played his game before starting to criticise the umpires. Queensland were and are the better team.. very simple.. all the umpires over the past six years couldn’t have got it all wrong could they.. the answer depends on whether you come from South of the Border or North.. Gallen did not once say the better team won.. yet when Queensland lost the second game in Sydney the consensus was the New South Wales team was the better team on the night.. Who’s the Bad Sport? Grow up Paul the Better team won..

How disappointing to here the QLD crowd tonight booing the NSW Team whenever their name was mentioned.
As a mother of 2 boys, trying to teach them good values and the importance of team sport, the behavior of the QLD crowd only gave me more reason to dislike the rugby league code – this display of bad sportsmanship is just another in a long line of things wrong with the attitude of League Players and fans alike!!! What is even more disturbing is that not one man could “MAN UP” and ask more from their beloved QLD Fans!!!! Typical….

NSW did exactly the same for QLD down in Game 2! I understand your point here Celia, and its fantastic that you’re raising your boys with good values and the virtues of sportsmanship, but the booing has long been a part of professional sport. The players are used to it too. It’s infectious at most NRL games when the visiting team come on the pitch. But at Origin, well if you were there, it’d be hard not to be swept up in the pro-QLD and anti-NSW sentiment (or vice versa when in Sydney).
Passions run high, and crowds always do whatever they can to put off the opposing team. From jibes from the stands, to trying to psyche out the conversion kicker..

Queensland through Smith and Lockyer played superb, controlled, pressure building football in the first half and that, combined with NSW’s ineptitude in trying to get out of their half in the first 30 minutes of the game, shaped the result.
The NSW halves could not provide the direction required and Ennis being injured, meant Gidley could not provide the defensive starch required. For the Ennis haters I agree Gidley was good from dummy half but he is as mistake prone and as hot headed as Ennis just not as aggressive nor defensively as strong.
Having said that the cheap shot by Smith in the Hayne try, and the classic Thaiday “third man in” play on Gidley were hard to stomach. How Thaiday has managed to avoid any repercussions for these actions has amazed me, he does it every single game he plays, never the instigator but always runs from a distance to escalate the situation, even as in tonight’s game there was no “situation”.
Queensland have a great team and they played great football tonight, but with Lockyer gone, and Civoneca looking the same way, I think this is Queensland’s swansong for at least three years.
Congratulations and enjoy it Maroons I think it will be your turn to suffer in 2012,13, 14.

I don’t think so, Qlds great ability over the last few years has been grace under pressure, and that is Lockyer to a tee. Smith, as he demonstrated in the tackle on Hayne, Thurston, Cronk, Hodges, and Slater (as demonstrated in several test matches) do not have this ability.
They are all great players, but have short fuses, without the steadiness, coolness, and grace of Lockyer and to a far lesser extent Petro, they will suffer badly.

Most of the young stars in the game are NSWmen, Hayne, Idris, Carney, Stewart, Dugan, Jennings, (Inglis) Lawrence et al. When you put that alongside the experienced core from this team I expect the worm will turn…eventually. Lockyer and Petro are huge losses, just as men, yet alone footballers. What for instance will Qld do without Lockyer running ‘the play’ for Slater everytime they need a try. I can’t believe NSW still can’t stop it.

It’s hard to win up there when the ref continually blows his whistle based on a crowd roar. There are more than half a dozen decisions that should have gone the other way – not to mention the various strips, and high shots from QLD that should have been called as knock-ons, and penalties.
NSW knew this before the game, and that’s what a vocal home crowd does – it gives you an edge – and the same advantage applied in Sydney for the NSW in game 2.
So you’ve got to make the most of your opportunities.
I can see Cameron Smith getting at least 3 weeks for his knees. He has been doiing this for many a season, and deserves finally to be reprimanded.
Kurt Gidley proved once again that he is a CURSE for NSW. Everything he touches turns to lead.
Minichello was the other player I didn’t agree with being picked – he proved me wrong in game 2 – but justified my logic in game 3.
NSW missed Beau Scott in attack and defence – as did the Dragons over the past month.
Well done to Darren Lockyer, who has always been a champion from day one – a fitting finale for a great player.
Back to the drawing board for NSW – next year can’t come quick enough !

But it didn’t go to ref’s call, it was ruled a penalty due to Thaiday’s involvement in getting Hannant over the line which is something you see in the NRL on a regular basis so why is tonight all of a sudden a different interpretation?
I agree in relation to your point regarding Cameron Smith and his leading with the knee in Hayne’s try. That was really ordinary stuff.

It was ruled a no try because of Thaidays involvement, otherwise we would have rugby union. Several decisions were crucial to the outcome. Both 2nd half Qld tries came after dubious penalties. Minicello and Gidley had two of the worst origin games in history. Considering all this NSW will be kicking themselves.

Agree about Beau Scott, Glenn Stewart was one of the Blues best, he was outstanding, but just not as aggressive and confronting as Scott has been in the other games for NSW. He was a big loss.
I also think it is off to the hall of mirrors for Mitchell Pearce he is tought, but his lack of a running game, and some poor pass and kick options really limited the Blues attack.
I thought Soward stepped up to try and mix up the game for the Blues but there was a lack of direction there that held them back when they should have pressed on, especially early in the second half.
Having said that the NSW stocks of half-backs all seem the gutsy grinding type, Pearce, Hornby, Hodkinson, Wallace, and Walsh. Mullen may be a bit lighter on his feet but he is no gifted genius like the Maroons have an abundance of.
Maybe we could convince Keiran Foran to become a Blue, I mean Toni Carroll played for NZ and Qld, maybe we could change him and Benji over to New South Welshmen and solve our halves problem!

Yep – my original team had Beau Scott and Glenn Stewart as the starting front rowers. Both are weapons in attack and defence.
More ball for NSW would have given their halves greater opportunity to show their wares. It’s near on impossible when the opposition has two-thirds of possession.

Some very good points Danno. Cheers for that. However, doesn’t this come down to the balance of the NSW pack and lack of go forward? One critical player out and the defensive line is under the pump. There was a lot of talk that if NSW won, it would be the end of the specialist prop. I think this showed that Stuart’s obsession with filling his team with backrowers (a habit he seemed to pick up at the Sharks) is just not the high percentage call when it comes to selection – especially for the Origin arena.
July 7th 2011 @ 12:00am
Danno1 said | July 7th 2011 @ 12:00am | Report comment
Greco I think Stuart realised NSW did not have the calibre of prop to play the game to match QLDs style, nor the talent to play them in a different style. So he went with as many backrowers as he could.
The second try to QLD was initiated from a great pass from Billy Slater in a two man tackle, but the reason he could do it was Tim Mannah couldn’t quite get the impact into the tackle, he was blowing hard, that’s no criticism of Tim, the Blues were under the pump, it’s a fast game, he couldn’t quite get there.
When Galloway came on he was struggling with the speed of the game, again he is a good player but cumbersome and like Mannah does not make the yardage of the big QLD boys.
So Stuart, I think, had no alternative but to pick a lighter more mobile, more quick off the deck pack of forwards, because like our halfback situation, we just don’t have the talent to match their power players.
After all that though I think Aiden Tolman would have been a better bet than Galloway, for endurance and speed off the deck.
Sticky will learn and Qld are getting weaker, so fingers crossed for next year.
