We all know what happened in the 2011 State of Origin series. So how’s this for a New South Wales Origin team for 2012?
Fullbacks: Josh Dugan or Brett Stewart.
Wingers: Akuila Uate and Brett Morris.
Centres: Michael Jennings and Mark Gasnier.
Second receiver: Jarryd Hayne.
Halfback: Todd Carney.
Hooker: Kurt Gidley.
Props: Gallen and Keith Galloway.
Second row: Ben Creagh and Glenn Stewart.
Lock: Luke Lewis.
Bench: Anthony Watmough, Jamal Idris, Tariq Sims and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.
Big games are decided by the crucial 1, 6, 7 and 9 spine positions, and NSW Blues coach and selector Ricky Stuart got it horribly wrong during the 2011 series.
I cannot find a place for any of his starting spine players he chose in the deciding Origin III. All four are outclassed by their Maroon counterparts.
The selection of Minichiello was more incompetent than embarrassing, but the Blues will gain a huge boost with either Dugan or Stewart, who are both world class and arguably in the same class as Slater.
Jamie Soward and Mitch Pearce are both wonderful clubs players but can only ever be described as “handy” at the elite level. “Handy” is simply not good enough when you have to counter Jonathan Thurston.
The troubled Todd Carney has the god given talent to equal any player, and if he can get his head right and find his best form, he would be an automatic selection.
Jarryd Hayne is too good to be left out (as he was in Origin I) or put on the bench, and he certainly adds more to the Blues at second receiver than what Jamie Soward has. Importantly, Hayne and Carney are both freakish and would complement each other well and be a major worry for Mal Meninga who has not lost much sleep over the Soward-Pearce pairing.
Kurt Gidley is one of the best and fittest players in the world and could do a Cam Smith and play for 80 minutes offering an extra interchange.
Lewis is a better player than Bird and should start. I would add to the bench Jamal Idris, Tariq Sims and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs who are all impact players.
Gone would be Anthony Minichiello, Jamie Soward, Mitchell Pearce, Michael Ennis and Tim Mannah. Beau Scott and Greg Bird would also go despite the fact they both went well this year, but unfortunately there are players in their positions who offer more to the team.
So, there is my blueprint pipe dream for a winning Blues team. I would back this team to win more games than they lose, but sadly that is all it is, a dream.
As long as NSW have a dictator as a coach who wants to be sole selector and god, the Maroons will continue to have the edge.
The Maroons have lost Lockyer and probably Petero, but they will get back Shillington, Taylor, Te’o, Costigan and Crocker to consider and may introduce big Rooster prop Martin Kennedy along with future national rep player Matt Gillett.
Leading try scorer Ben Barba could be a bench consideration. The Maroons will lose young Raider forward Josh Papalii to New Zealand, although maybe the new IC will correct that dumb clause.
With a Queenslander tipped to be the new chairman of the Independent Commission, it is unlikely that NSW will get independent selectors.

I’m a maroons fan but this is what I think:
1. Josh Dugan – Freak. Like Hayne, he must be in the side.
2. Akuila Uate – Cemented his spot in the team this series I would think.
3. Michael Jennings – Game breaker. The only way NSW will beat Qld is to score more points than them. He’ll score you tries this bloke.
4. Jarrod Hayne – Put him anywhere as long as he’s in there. Didn’t look out of place in Game 3 at centre. He needs to be closer to the ball. With Gaz gone, centre’s his go.
5. Brett Morris – For the lack of anyone better. Just kidding. Big, fast, strong and has been there. Everyone has bad games. Selectors need to show some loyalty.
6. Jamie Soward – What more does he need to prove.
7. Jarred Mullen – A genuine halfback. Watch him blossom under Bennet next year. Has always been better than Pearce for mine.
8. Tom LL – Big powerful and mean. Origin Player.
9. Michael Ennis – They missed him when he got injured in Game 3.
10. Paul Gallen – Found his home. Tends to ball play a lot in the b/row and gets in the way. Better and most useful when leading from the front.
11. Greg Bird – Has the mongrel that is made for origin.
12. Beau Scott – They missed him in G3. Origin player written all over him.
13. Luke Lewis – Why he is not picked first and everyone later is beyond me.
14. Kurt Gidley – He is not a starting SOO player. Too much pressure on him and he tries too hard and lets everyone including himself down. He is not an xfactor but must be in the team. He’s like Berrigan used to be for Queensland. Tough player that you can rely on and dangerous with fresh legs at the latter stage of the halfs.
15. Kade Snowden – A perfect prop for mine. Will grow into something special given time and opportunity.
16. Keith Galloway – Big powerful and mean. Has the looks of an Origin Player. Didn’t do anything wrong but lacked impact in G3. Blown away by the event on his debut. Will be better for it for his next game. He’ll be hungry. Matt Scott also played ordinarily in his first game for Qld. NSW selectors must put some faith in their players.
17. Anthony Watmough – I call him short wheel base. Explodes onto the field and with fresh legs is a potent weapon in offense.

I like your team, i just think Uate needs to be on the wing, he is A FREAk and caused more problems than most from NSW,
Tim Mannah got 20 or so metres from game 3 and Gallen got 150metres nuff said. Lewis is one of the best Lock in the world he needs to be 13 or second row. Kade snowden or leroy lahrs should replace mannah in your team. Brett could even start on wing with Hayne at Fullback.
My team, to be continued if neccesary

Too early to pick a team except the coach, not Ricky Stuart please! Also Pearce and Ennis no, no, no!
For once, let’s choose first all, the current SOO players, in form, playing in 2012, and then rule them out if there is a better player . For example Pearce or Hornby at 1/2 back, Hornby is a far bettter option, if in form, especially combining with Soward. Do not write off the likes of Hindmarsh who could be manufactured into a front rower if necessary. We have too many outstanding backrowers. Far too often we are choosing players like Idris, Dugan when in fact they have not proven themselves at this level. Brett Stewart or Dugan for example, fair dinkum if you are honest with yourselves, it has to be Brett Stewart, no comparison. However in saying that, Dugan may play to his potential in 2012 and therefore could be considered otherwise. Dugan selected over Hayne was a disgrace and an insult to Hayne. Whatever happens, if Stuart is the coach we can say goodbye to 2012 once again, unless a miriacle has happened and he can learn from his mistakes and arrogance!

Pearce i can understand but Ennis is top notch in defence and offense (e.g. setting up plays) Stuart besides not putting Hayne in first game done his job great, he showed and NSW squad showed what they could do in game 2 2011, this is a vast improvement from 2010. Idris can be taken into account now having played for Australia in the Anzac test, and proving to be a major threat (he is just a physical machine)
MY squads
option 1
2012 NSW state of origin squad
BACKS
Fullbacks- Hayne (if injured stewart, Dugan, or Mini)
Wingers- Uate and Matt King (or TRex Williams)
Centres- Jennings and Idris (need that speed and physicality)

Lock- Luke Lewis (or Gallen
Bench: Glen Stewart, Kurt Gidley, Watmough. B. Anasta and Hindmarsh.
Option 2
BACKS
Fullback- Stewart
Wingers- Hayne and Uate
Centres- Jennings and Idris or Lyon
5 8th- Campese or Soward
Halfback- Mullen
FORWARDS
Props- Tom L L and Snowden
Hooker- Ennis
Second Row- Watmough, Bird
Lock- Gallen
Bench- Luke Lewis (good lock but could go anywhere) Gidley( can play hooker great or any half) Creagh, Hindmarsh (tackle machine), Anasta, Glenn Steward and Galloway
As you can see my team options are similar but still people solid in those positions, so people tell me what you think and please upload your own team 1-13 including bench, cheers.

6. Jamie Lyon

Would you rather Belamy? LOL
Creagh is not as good as Bird so start him, some issued the stats b4 and here they are
stats are as follows
Creagh and Bird:
Game 1: Bird 89m and 28 tackles, 4 tackle breaks and 1 try assist, Creagh 40m and 19 tackles, no tackle breaks or try assists
Game 2: Bird 105m and 24 tackles, Creagh 73m and 26 tackles, 2 tackle breaks a piece
Game 3: Bird 85m and 37 tackles, 5 tackle breaks, Creagh 65m and 25 tackles, no tackle breaks
As you can see Bird puts in more work.
Another problem i have with your squad is Mannah at prop, he made 20-30 metres in game 3 while Gallen did 150 NUFF said,
other than the that i see no problem with you NSW Squad, Tom L Lahrs should replace Mannah.

I don’t care Mannah is an upcoming player he is only young so give him a year or so and he will be as good as Gallen and Bird only has done better because Creagh hardly got the ball and They hardly ran at him so No-one can change my opinion unless it is something like someone retired!

Ryan, Hayne can fit anywhere including 5/8 but I agree he is best at fullback or centre. I think different, but your team is worthy of consideration. Jamie Lyon has made it clear that he does not want to selected! I would have Ben Hornby 1/2 back, he will get the best out of Jamie Soward, his kicking game is vital.I would have Brett Stewart at full back and Hayne in the centres. Workout a game plan to suit that. Kurt Giddley to start at hooker and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs instead of Mannah. I would consider Hindmarsh in the front row instead of Snowden. His defence alone will help to secure up the middle, which is where we bleed. Beau Scott should be in there and Brett Morris. I like Mullen on the bench, he deserves a go.

Hayne is a Fullback, He played Centre for one game and done well, Hayne plays his best football at Fullback because look at 09. He played Fullback absolutley insane that year and 2010 so I just say he is the 2nd best FULLBACK in the game (Slater No 1).
Other than that I Didn’t know about Lyon so Bring Mullen No 6 and push

Tom, in SOO we have to bring back players, that we know can do the job. This means we need the experience instead of throwing in some potential player, on hope. Beau Scott and Ben Creagh are bot players that can play centre and we know they can be reliable, so it can be an option. It all depends who you have in a team and how you shape it. Ryan, I do agree with you, Hayne best position is fullback and with Stewart and Slater, they are all up there as the best full backs in the competition. I look at a team and see if I can use both players as an advantage and I believe Stewart at fullback and Hayne in the centres will give another option. Although this depends on how the coach can utilise both players in his game plan. Mullens does deserve his chance, he can play both so I would put him in as 1/2 and keep Soward at 5/8. Front row is a problem, I would be looking at the form of the old experienced forwards such as Luke Bailey. At least you know they will do their job!

I agree m8, i am studying a degree in sport management right now, and we studied the All Blacks at the world cup ( im a Kiwi ), 1987 we won the world cup with players a good mix of youngish and other more experienced. 1991 world cup we stagnated cause of all the player being old and no fresh young talent.
I agree we need a good mix of fresh and experience good players. Scott at centre (as gaz is gone) THUMBS way up, Mullen has been over looked way too much,
so ne way IMO we need a mix of middle age good players, a bit of late age experienced good players, and some fresh young talent. And yes HAYNE i definately agree with, club doesnt always mean u will be good a step up, case in Dugan- Dugan was doing better at club level than Hayne and Mini this year at Fullback, but Mini totally outclassed him in game 2 and Hayne was sick in game 3 at centre.

Tom, it was an insult to put Dugan over Hayne in the first place and Dugan showed he is not up to this level.
In the mixture of youth and experience it is silly to put two halves with little experinece together, such as Stuart did with Soward and Pearce. Common sense would show Hornby and Soward or for example Anasta and Pearce. Personally I do not think Pearce is up to this level and the same applies to Ennis, with Farrar a better option, out of the two. NSW has many players to choose from. The key factor needed is to bleed new players in slowly, to create stability of a team. NSW has a number of players such as Watmough, Giddley, Stewart, Lewis, Hayne, Creagh, Scott, Gallen, Bird to name a few, as automatic selection and to build from there. NSW needs a coach such as Des Hasler or if a full time coach is required, I would put in Andrew Johns.

“In the mixture of youth and experience it is silly to put two halves with little experinece together, such as Stuart did with Soward and Pearce” EXACTLY, my m8 once said they shuld put Johns on the bench LOL.
Anyway “Watmough, Giddley, Stewart, Lewis, Hayne, Creagh, Scott, Gallen, Bird to name a few, as automatic selection and to build from there” Did i meantion Mullen and possibly Carney? Least there etching closer, but it has been absurd thus far as a competition.
