A vintage display from Manchester United has seen them humiliate Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford overnight, only hours after Manchester City had reaffirmed their title chances with a 5-1 win over Tottenham.
Early in the day it had seemed as though a new title favourite had emerged, as a slick passing exhibition from Manchester City saw them thump Tottenham, with Edin Dzeko netting four impressive goals.
But the events later in the day at Old Trafford would change that.
As if show their cross-town rivals who remains at the top of the EPL tree, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were simply relentless in what was a magnificent show of strength.
The win was punctuated by a Wayne Rooney hat-trick, with two superb free kicks and a penalty capping an impressive display by the England No. 10.
Former Aston Villa winger Ashley Young was equally as potent, with two curling shots from the edge of the area completing the rout.
If there had been an lingering doubts as to whether Arsenal had slipped off the pace of the true contenders for the Premier League title, they were well and truly extinguished last night, and pressure will continue to mount on beleaguered boss Arsene Wenger.
It sealed a tough day all round for football fans in North London, who had earlier witnessed Manchester City dispatch Tottenham Hotpsur 5-1 a White Hart Lane.
It was death by a thousand passes for Harry Redknapp’s men as David Silva and debutant Samir Nasri ran riot over Spurs’ defence, with a lethal Dzeko combining well with Sergio Aguero up front.
With Chelsea stuttering to a 3-1 win over Premiership newcomers Norwich a day earlier and Arsenal and Tottenham clearly in a state of decline, after three rounds it would already seem that the EPL is now a race in two.
Already, football anoraks are beginning to cast their eyes forward toward October, when Roberto Mancini’s men travel to Old Trafford on October 23.
Given the glittering performances on display by both teams yesterday, it looks a mouth-watering prospect, and yet an agonising 7 week wait.

Unreal result. Apparently 115 years since the Gunners conceded 8 goals in a game

A combination of Arsenal’s ineptitude and ManU’s brilliance. Arsenal are in freefall and the two Manchester teams are running rampant. You can almost lock away the top 2 now.
Arsenal desperately need to bring in some quality players but with only 3 days left to do so it will be difficult. They should have accepted the inevitable and let Fabregas/Nasri go earler. It would have given them more time to bring in players. It may also be hard for them to lure the top players to the club given their start to the season.

The Guardian’s chalkboard analysis on Nasri’s first game with City:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/aug/29/premier-league-chalkboard-analysis?CMP=twt_gu
I’ve always admire Wenger, for years he had the Gunners playing the most attractive football in England, but this analysis is perhaps a bit damning of Wenger, indicating that never quite got the best out of Nasri, you can see from the maps just how much freedom Nasri was given to cut in, collect the ball in midfield, go out wide in attack, etc.
Check this quote out: He misplaced just two passes in open play, and was credited with three assists – as many as he claimed for Arsenal in the entire 2010-11 season.
