UFC: Heavyweight Battle
UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez
The UFC returns to Anaheim for the fifth time to host the ultimate battle in MMA, a fight for the UFC Heavyweight title. The two biggest and most powerful men on the planet, take their place in the octagon to see who is the biggest and best fighter in the world.
It is a landmark event with the UFC debut on network television (A deal worth $90m for the UFC). It is going to be an interesting bout.
The champion, Cain Velasquez has been out of action with injuries since he beat Brock Lesnar for the belt just over a year ago.
If he does have any ring rust at all, he better be aware as Junior Dos Santos has some of the sharpest boxing in the division and will, no doubt, capitalise on this is, if he is not at his best for this fight.
In saying that Cain is the most well-rounded fighter in the division and with training partners like Koscheck, Cormier, Buentello etc, I am sure he knows how important this fight is in not only cementing his place as the UFC HW champion but showing the world on network television what the sport of MMA is all about.
Prediction: Cain by TKO in the 4th round to retain the UFC Heavyweight belt. Winner to defend the belt against the winner of Brock Lesnar v Alistair Overeem
The co-main event of the evening, features former WEC Lightweight champion Benson ‘Smooth’ Henderson face off against Clay ‘The Carpenter’ Guida, with the winner getting a title shot against current champion Frankie Edgar.
Clay has been on a winning streak, winning his last four fights against top contenders. In his last fight, he disposed off Anthony Pettis, the fighter that took the WEC LW belt of Henderson.
Clay, for the first time in his career, looks like a LW champion and has shown relentless pace in his most recent fights and has also shown a lot of improvement in his striking and ground game.
Ben Henderson, on the other hand, has only lost one fight in his last 13 bouts (when he lost the belt to Pettis) and holds impressive victories over the likes of rising LW Donald Cerrone, Mark Bocek and Jim Miller.
Prediction: Ben Henderson by unanimous decision. Winner to take on Frankie Edgar for the UFC LW Championship
For me, the only other fight on the card that I am looking forward to is Dustin Poirier v Pablo Garza.
These two FW fighters are up and coming and seem to have the attributes to fight at the top level of the FW division.
This fight will really catapult the winner into the top three of the division and will also help them create a road to a shot for the FW title, currently held by Jose Aldo.
