Seven resurrects Santo, Sam and Ed

Have you heard? 2010 World Cup favourite “Santo, Sam & Ed’s Cup Fever” is officially back! Well, sort of. Early yesterday morning the date for the revamped version of Santo, Sam & Ed’s Cup Fever was announced.
From January 30th, the hilarious trio of Santo Cilauro, Sam Pang and Ed Kavalee will reunite in front of a live audience, with interviews, sketches and bad desk mugs. But while their previous effort together was a roaring success there’s been a few changes to the formula.
So are they good or bad changes? I’ll let you decide, but here’s the jist of it.
Firstly, the program is no longer just about the World Cup and the all-round antics of the world game. The show has been given another life covering all sports, hence the revised show name of “Santo, Sam & Ed’s Sports Fever”.
Good news is we don’t have to wait until the next World Cup to see these guys in action again and football fans won’t be the only ones who’ll get a kick out of the show. Bad news is that the broadness of sports they can cover might water down the hilarity into some lesser version of Roy & HG.
Another obvious change is the broadcaster.
The boys will no longer call SBS home. Instead, the show will air on Seven.
Each have experienced the ups and downs of commercial television, but none moreso than Ed Kavalee. His gig as host of “TV Burp” (on Seven) only lasted one season before being canned, and though his role as co-host of “Joy of Sets” (on Nine) was well received, the show was bumped to a later timeslot for the last few episodes. Such is the fickleness of commercial television.
Then there’s the Sitch-uation.
While Rob Sitch will be on board as a writer and producer, at this stage he will not be taking part in front of the camera. This video summarises just how great Sitch was in “Cup Fever”. When his bread and butter is sketch comedy, no Sitch would be a massive, massive loss to the show.
Finally, and in my opinion the most dramatic and potentially devastating change, is the timeslot. On SBS, even when we’d all be up in the early hours ready and raring for a World Cup fixture to kick-off, “Cup Fever” always had primetime.
It aired each and every time at 8.30pm, with later repeats on SBS TWO. But on Seven, “Sports Fever” will start at the 10.30pm timeslot (9.30pm for Queensland). Harsh way to start if you ask me.
Even with these obstacles, I’m truly hoping the show is a success, and like “Cup Fever” before it, is a lovely, lovely way to burn.

I’ll watch the first one at least, but I’m not hopeful, the list of shows leaving ABC/SBS for the commercial networks and failing because commercial TV meddles with the formula is long and distinguished! I might be paranoid (who says I am?:)) but I find it hard to imagine a network that holds the rights to the behemoth AFL will allow too many kind words for A-League football and/or the Socceroos.

well as long as they keep football prominent among the sports covered i’ll watch it … i noticed they’re billing it as having an “international sports” line-up.
And with DVRs we can always fast forward thru any eggchasing that finds its way on to the 7 version of the show. Plus it overcomes the timeslot issue. I watch 90pc of these sort of weekly shows on delay now anyway. (live for sports and news only)

Given the intelligence of the average Channel Seven “punter” I fear Seven is going to ruin this show…..and these 3 chaps are going to be forced into being interested in AFL…..

To be fair, although Santo, Sam & Ed’s main passion is football, I think they are also quite interested in AFL.
Being on later means they probably have a bit more flexibility in their content and not having to put up with potential nay-sayers complaining about content in family-friendly hours.

You are right Channel 7 & football, even hearing these words in the same sentence gives one an uneasy feeling.

your fears are somewhat justified as seven have failed with every AFL show they’ve ever done. They apparently tried to get Before the Game from ten, but were unsuccessful, I see this as being sevens next attempt.

Probably should not admit this, but the only footy show i watch is before the game, love the comedy which can be good, but am not that keen on Sam Lane … in any sense.

A commercial station is showing interest, be happy, and cut out the paranoia.
Santo’s from Melbourne, so the AFL won’t be alien to him – it will be all about appealing to a broad national TV audience.
The working dog team have had success on commercial TV before, I’m sure they can make a success of it again.

There’s nothing paranoid about remembering what ch7 did to football in the past – they admitted it.
On a following point, the low production quality of Cup fever was part of its charm, a more polished commercial network version is also worth fearing as much as is what has previously been mentioned.

Sam Pang is from Melbourne too. A Carlton tragic, and played footy at a pretty decent amateur level.
I think the paranoia is justified, look at what Seven did with the Tony Squires/The Fat show from the ABC

Its not paranoia, its concern that a commercial station will ruin what was once a great show, lets be honest, they have form the commercial networks – you’ve given a great example right there. Mind you, if there remains a decent football elementin the show, it will be great to have on FTATV:)

Shattered the talent agreed to do this.
SBS was the perfect home for it. The laid back, error riddled nature of Cup Fever won’t work on one of the big commercials.

Was a great show on SBS at the time of the WC. I could also see potential in taking the mickey out of Football on a weekly show. The spectrum of cultures & vast amount of games spread across the globe weekly & often bizarre incidents as a result of these factors means it would never get boring for a football fan.

The best thing about the SBS show was, the fact it wasn’t a mainstream/commercial station, the international nature of the event and the amount of characters there are in Football, and the absence of Australian parochialism that is so prevalent in the commercial media world.
Fingers crossed but I won’t be holding my breath.

I would have preferred S,S&E do a 30 minute show on SBS focussing on the A-League, EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga etc etc, there would be too much good material. Hopefully they give the A-League a good plug every week.

Considering they take the p!ss out of sport, I suggest this is probably one show the A-League doesn’t want to be covered in!

I don’t know, the AFL Footy Show** did a pretty good job in taking the mickey and yet remaining respectful to the AFL. It helped create personalities out of the players while also promoting the game as a whole. Sonmething similar for the HAL on SBS would have been my preference by a long shot. With the sheer numbers of football games being played during the year, If this was solely a football show, I’d be concerned they’d never get around to showing any local stuff….as it is, by including the eggchasers and others, now I question where they’ll find the time for ANY football coverage, let alone local football?
**I used to watch it, but I suspect I’m not the only one who has turned away from the AFL..perhaps jaded from overexposure and the attitude of the AFL in general these days

Yeah, I don’t know, I reckon there’s enough to poke fun at and be irreverent but still love the game. Imagine the fun they’d have with Sydney FC’s stance on diving then Shannon Cole goes for a roll a few weeks later.

Even ex-Victory man Gary Cole being appointed CEO of Sydney FC on one day speaking about the need for stability at the club, then the very next day an article in the SMH appears questioning Vitja’s re-appointment at the Sky Blues… Don’t mean to pick on Sydney but football is a rich source of humour especially on the local front. Might help the image/mood of the game/fans if we can learn to take things a little less personally and remember to laugh at ourselves a bit more often.

A shot of Mehmet with worry beads
The bowling alley sketch that saw 3 AU players hit the deck in tandem
Massimo Murdocca & Erik Paartalu showing totally different methods of helping an old lady get a tin of beans from a supermarket top shelf
Ian Ferguson smiling with a scene of birds dropping from the sky behind him
Frank Lowy with the tape he keeps constantly in his pocket called the ‘tape of World Cup hope”
Ben Buckley talking to his wife about how “robust’ the peas were at dinner
Then of course the big Daddy Maradona’s in town
Many more locally of course & we havent even started on overseas.
