Reports coming out of France say that former Australian forward Willie Mason is unhappy and bored playing rugby for Toulon and is eyeing an NRL return.

The interest in securing the services of the 31-year-old is reportedly very low, and the question needs to be asked: what club, in their right mind, would offer Mason a lifeline?

Mason was said to be a bad influence on younger players at his two previous NRL clubs, the Cowboys and the Roosters. Both of these teams took a risk with Mason and both finished with the wooden spoon.

On his day Mason was the most destructive forward in the NRL, with good skills and great leg speed. Those days became less frequent as his career wore on with many former greats questioning his courage and desire – “Willie Mason wouldn’t intimidate a fly,” stated Tommy Raudonikis in 2008.

Mason was forever the subject of nasty rumours that he was involved in match fixing and drugs; the only claim with any proof was when he tested positive to cocaine and was fined $25,000 when playing for Canterbury in 2004.

Whilst he has always seemed to enjoy the nightlife that Sydney offered, it was Mason’s lack of on-field application in his previous few years in the NRL that would be the most concerning aspect for any prospective club willing to a punt on him.
