Australia and India continue the second Test cricket match at the Sydney Cricket Ground today. Join our live commentary from 10.20 EST. Australia will be looking to press home an advantage with the bat, while India will seek early breakthroughs to restore parity.
Ricky Ponting was 44 not out overnight, with captain Michael Clarke on 47, after a 73-run stand that saw their side recover from danger at 3/37. The stumps score was 3/116.
A now-familiar top order collapse had preceded the partnership, with David Warner departing to a rebound slips catch for 8, Shaun Marsh caught at slip for a first-ball duck, and Ed Cowan lbw after a positive start for 16. Marsh especially is enduring a wretched run, with three runs in three innings.
Australia were only batting yesterday because of an insipid performance by India on the Australian ground that his historically best suited their batsmen. The tourists were shot out for only 191, wilting in the line of Australian bowling that was determined and consistent, but a long way from fire and brimstone.
The good pitch gave some assistance to the bowlers, but should have been good for batting. This was of little help to India, whose batsmen prodded and poked edges behind the wicket and another three catches to Cowan at short leg.
Only MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar looked at ease, with Dhoni producing some rasping shots in an aggressive and unbeaten 57, and Tendulkar unlucky to edge into his stumps after an equally positive 41. Dhoni and R Ashwin at least saved their side from a complete slump, as James Pattinson captured four top-order wickets to extend his flying start to Test cricket, while Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus took three each, including Siddle’s hundredth Test victim.
Still, there seemed to be life remaining in the pitch for Zaheer Khan, who shot out the three Australian left-handers. It will be a crucial first hour this morning. Ponting and Clarke have both been uncertain starters of late, and looked shaky early in their innings yesterday. If India can snare a couple of early breakthroughs and get into the tail, they’ll be a chance of keeping Australia to around 200 to 250, and will remain in the match.
If Australia can push on to 300, it will be a very unlikely comeback for India from there.

A dominant batting display today from Australia’s experienced middle order, of that there can be no dispute.
I’m all for Australia winning Tests, but it would be nice to see at least one Test in this series go well into the 5th day. I’m not sure that will happen though. The Indian batting lineup looks shell shocked, even more so than they did against England 6 months ago. Aside from the occasional fiery burst from Zaheer, I can’t see them making significant inroads with the ball either.
It may well be that Australia will only have to bat twice more in this series.

I think Austrlaia is in a very strong position, and it is very hard for India to make a comeback in this test match now….
I am sure that India can not win this match now, but i do think that India will manage to draw this match…

And what a sight this is. Michael Clarke leaves the ground to one of the most enthused ovations you’ve ever seen. All of the Indian players flocked to him to shake his hand, wonderful to see. The crowd was upstanding. Michael Hussey gave him a hug, then lagged behind to let Clarke lead him off the ground.
Clarke goes in on 251 not out, equal with Wally Hammond’s score on this ground. Ahead of him in SCG scores are only Brian Lara (277) and Reginal Foster (287). He has made over 200 runs today, and batted the entire day.
Ricky Ponting was the only man out today. He too made a hundred, before slicing to gully on 134. He was almost out running for his century, but aside from that looked untroubled, though never dominant, against less than inspiring Indian bowling. The bowlers toiled but never seemed to threaten.
Mike Hussey came in late and attacked the bowling, scoring 55 of his own in putting on 157 with Clarke, at nearly five an over. Clarke attacked too, as you’d guess by the fact that he outscored Hussey almost two to one in that partnership, Hussey happy to play support.
A devastating day of Australian batting, and records await tomorrow if the captain can hold his concentration. India have no choice but to wait, either until they can snaffle Australian wickets, or the Australians decide they are done and declare. Either way, expect India to have two days and change to bat, to survive, and try to achieve an unlikely draw.
Australia’s lead is already at 291, more than India have scored in any of their recent overseas Tests. Clarke and Hussey can push it on, Haddin can attack India’s tired bowlers, and the persistent Australian tail could easily be worth a few in these conditions. The onus is entirely with Australia, and we can only wait for tomorrow morning to see how the rest of this match will play out.
Do join me then, from 10.20 Australian eastern time. Many thanks for your company today, and do keep the conversations running into the evening. I’ll check in from time to time.
Best wishes and farewells to you all, and what a day of cricket it was. 4/482.

Something to think about.

Not really much to think about at all.
Clarke is hardly old, he’s the captain making a captain’s knock and it’d be nice to see him developing a new team.
The three younger guys (who incidentally are protecting the three old guys as you call them – hiding down the order like timid little girls) are just starting out, your comment embodies everything that is wrong with Australian cricket fans and commentary at the moment – the perform or perish mentality – show a little faith and patience to the new selections (Khawaja should still be there, and I expect the selectors to drop Marsh for Watson even though he should be persevered with as well). Ponting debuted at 20 and was shown a little faith despite 4 single figure scores in his first 6 tests – he also started down the order protected by the older batsmen (bear in mind he also debuted in a team that couldn’t lose a test match if they tried, the guys coming in now are entering a very vulnerable team).

Does this change anyone’s view of Clarke? (Or Ponting for that matter)
5:20pm
MrKistic said | 5:20pm | Report comment
Nup. I’ve always been a fan. Ponting on the other hand… always happy to see him make runs, it’s just the attitude around it that’s been fairly uncool. It will be interesting to see if that changes. If nothing else perhaps the media can focus on something else for a while. Like Clarke batting unbelievably today.
5:22pm
Fisher Price said | 5:22pm | Report comment

Rhialto the Marvellous said | 5:24pm | Report comment
Does Ponting have a history of a bad attitude? (Forgive me, I’m not Australian or a born-and-raised cricket fan.) I spoke to the physio from Ponting’s IPL team (Andrew Leipus) and he said Ponting was super awesome in the way he worked with his teammates, especially the young Indians.
5:28pm
Geoff Lemon said | 5:28pm | Report comment
Forgiven. I’m sure he’s great with his teammates and his training and so on. Very determined and hardworking. But his attitude on the field has often been pretty ugly. Sportsmanship generally comes second to winning, and especially as a younger man, he was very inclined to sulk, throw tantrums, bitch and moan. It’s really only in the last couple of years (since he was so severely criticised after this fixture in 2008, in fact) that he discovered the ability to be more statesmanlike.
11:51pm
Brendon said | 11:51pm | Report comment
And Steve Waugh didn’t sulk and get surly? I think it was yesterday Ian Healy made a joke about it when they showed Slater’s dropped catch “clanger” during a classic catches segment.
Allan Border could be a complete A-hole to the point of destroying players careers.
Don Bradman was not even remotely close to a captain as he was a player.
Greg Chappell … no explanation needed.
Yet Ponting has had to cop twice the amount of flak captains of past eras copped.
5:29pm
MrKistic said | 5:29pm | Report comment
I should say it’s more his outward attitude than team attitude. By all accounts everyone is happy with his team work but it was more the stubbornness and the arrogance in his attitude towards everyone else. Which I guess is hard to deny because it obviously contributes to what made him so good. But after two years you get a bit sick of hearing Ricky Ponting saying how well Ricky Ponting is playing in the nets and isn’t actually out of form, despite not making a ton for two years.
5:31pm
MrKistic said | 5:31pm | Report comment
And what Geoff said
5:40pm
Red Kev said | 5:40pm | Report comment
Won’t change my opinions at all.
I would say that Ponting lacks grace – he’s a scrapper (and is probably why he’s been so good as a batsman) and he will not leave the Australian team without being dragged / kicked howling in fury. And that is the problem with him.
It is great to see him make runs, I am happy to be proven wrong when I said he was past it; but I still would have liked to have seen him retired when he relinquished the captaincy after his Ashes (which let us not forget was all sorts of terrible). Australia needs to build a batting lineup and they can’t do it with Ponting and Hussey still there – Clarke and Watson have to be the new elder statesmen.
5:20pm
Geoff Lemon said | 5:20pm | Report comment
I’ve liked Clarke and backed him since he became captain. Wasn’t a huge fan before then, but he’s really stepped up, and showed what an unimaginative captain Ponting was. Not sure what the critics are still criticising, but some will have to pipe down after this.
5:25pm
MrKistic said | 5:25pm | Report comment
Definitely agree on that point. Ponting was always too reactive and was happy to just wait for something to happen. Clarke is constantly trying something and generally attacking. Early days yet I suppose but definitely good signs. Not to mention his batting since he’s been cap’n which is just getting better. As we’re currently seeing.
5:22pm
Geoff Lemon said | 5:22pm | Report comment
Re Ponting, though, I still think he’ll be a liability in England, whatever he scores in Australia between now and then. It’s flattering to deceive.
That said, good on him, and it was nice to see such a big smile from the chap today. I’ve felt for him, given the pressure he’s been under. Just think he should be gracious enough to choose his moment well.

Fisher Price said | 5:24pm | Report comment

It’s changed mine. Not just in this match. The captaincy has been the making of Clarke. Maybe he needed the responsibility to bring out his hidden disciplines and strategic skills. He looks like being as ruthless as any also, which may not please everyone. Ponting is much the same though. The boofhead should have been run out on 99.

I worried about India playing like this. I also know that Australia once again proved that they are the best. It is impossible to win this test for India. Only a miracle should happen for India to win this test match. We will be able to count those kind of matched by our finger itself. So at least India should try hard to win the next two matches. If they could not play this delivery itself then how are they going to face SODUKU ball. Its a kind of ball that you could not expect or predict which way it is going to turn. I used to play that kind of delivery in my local matches. Even mighty hitting batsman could not play that ball. It can be bowled only by using tennis ball, cricket ball, its very hard to bowl.

When you are not playing the above mentioned teams, you can play the IPL and make millions. No more Australia, England, South Africa for you. If the ICC forces you to play these 3 teams, we will put in a clause that says we can only play them at home, on slow, dusty, turning tracks, that kill fast bowlers. You know we have a lot of clout in ICC, so we can do anything. We can even ban the opposition from playing fast bowlers and bat with only tail-enders. We can do anything you know. We control all the money supply in this game. So ha-ha-ha-ha.

And I will love it even more after India loses this series 4-0 and Tendulkar gets his much anticipated and discussed 100th 100 in a meaningless one day match against Bangladesh 6 months from now. And that will be tea.
It has well and truly been Australia’s day, and Australia’s session. Ricky Ponting was finally out after an innings of 136, and a partnership of 288. His 40th Test century and his sixth on this ground.
Michael Clarke is still there, on 170, looking aggressive and playing some lovely shots. Mike Hussey has faced 8 balls, smashed two boundaries, and looks in great form. His timing on those shots was magnificent.
New ball taken, it got the wicket of Ponting, can it do any more for India after tea? Or can Mr Cricket join in the fun, and Clarke overtake India’s first innings total singlehanded?
4 for 349 at tea, a lead of 158 runs, with 6 wickets in hand. We’ll be back in 15 minutes after tea.

Well, what a huge innings it was. 134 for Ponting alone, and a partnership of 288 with Michael Clarke. That was Ponting’s 40th Test ton, and the partnership was the 8th highest by an Australian pair in Australia.
Ponting’s hundred came from 225 balls, with 14 fours.
It looked scratchy early, it never looked completely dominant, but he looked better and happier and more confident as the innings went on. His smile to Clarke on 99 when Clarke wanted a suicide single was indicative of a good mental space, I reckon. Nicely played Ponting.

Very hot day in Sydney and those Indian fast bowlers would of been exhausted after the 1st session, it is overcast but still hot UV rays at there highest, if the aussies come into bowl after tea fresh and rested, with a 150 plus run lead , India batters will be tired after being in th hot field too, all advantages to Australia. ANd Shane Watson when fit has to come back into this team no debate, just a case of where he bats,. And his bowling if he can still do it is highly valued as the 5 th bowling option. I think Watson when he bowls well is our best bowler as well , as our best batter, but he only bowls in short spells he can not be the leader of the bowling attack. He is 31 this year In April i think. I hope he still has the ability to bowl those nasty 3-4 over partnership breaking spells.

Why? Because in 18 months we face the best bowling attack in the world on their home turf (the last time Ponting faced them on his own turf he averaged 16.14 over 8 innings). 10 days short of 2 years and 34 innings since his last century, what if he goes 10 days more than 2 years for his next?
Wanting to prove everyone wrong is commendable. Actually doing it is just brilliant. Going out on top is something Ponting deserves. Wouldn’t you rather see that rather than him scratching around and getting dropped (make no mistake if he slumps again the selectors won’t persist with him)? The guy has nothing left to prove.

So, Ponting scoring a hundred – finally – is more useful than a younger player getting a chance to do likewise?
We wouldn’t even need to discuss his retirement if the team had been picked on merit since last year’s Ashes trouncing. Making a ton is always to be commended but let’s not rewrite history because of a good knock against a ragged India.
Ponting had plenty of chances over a two-year period in which he played poorly – and it has cost the team – but the selectors have lacked the fortitude to drop him.

There it is! Oh, hearts in mouths! Was nearly run out on the 100th run. He just pushed that ball away, took off for the run, there was a throw at the stumps at the non-striker’s end that would have had him cold if it had hit.
The front of his shirt is absolutely smeared brown with dirt and dust. (His trousers might have been a similar shade after that close call.) He had to dive full length onto his chest to try and make his ground, and would still have been caught feet short, but the throw missed… just… and Ponting, after such a long wait, has finally got that Test match century.

Not from Ponting though, but Clarke. Got a wide ball from Sharma, he’s starting throwing his bat at these now, that was VERY wide, and he stretched and just got it, drove it for four.

Hot day , that would of been exhausting for the Indian quicks, and after lunch it will still be hot tough 2nd session for India coming up they will have to I think get the aussies out for under 300 otherwise game over, this weather was really hot hottest part of day, if aussies bowl 3rd session the UV rays would go down and a change is forecast even showers but more cloud cover, so will help quicks.
And the aussie bowlers have been able to put there feet up in the hottest part of the day no batting or bowling.
All advantages right now to Australia.

I’m probably one of those that claimed we needed youth in the team and wanting Ponting gone. Can’t really argue with results though, and you have to look back at the bigger picture: we have Pattinson, we have Starc coming, we’re waiting on Cummins who seems like an auto-selection – never mind that Siddle (28 I think) is bowling off his head and Hilfenhaus is turning into a workhorse.
We’re playing two young openers, and Khawaja, a good young bat, made way for a form player (if unfit), which bodes well for the depth of the batting at this point. It’s not as if Clarke and Watson are ancient either. And really, aside from Khawaja (who I like), who takes the other old boy’s spot at this point.
Perhaps having Ponting be consistent helps the young players – I mean, imagine if we had a rookie 1-6, they collapse, and our bowlers had to do excellent work to bowl out India only to have to go bowl again after lunch on Day 2 with a 30 run deficit. Of course, that’s all predicated on the fact that Ponting, you know, actually is consistent.
And it’s not even Ponting: if we had ANY guy, of ANY age, who always scored 40 odd off 80 balls; maybe you need that if your batsmen are prone to collapses.
12:36pm
Red Kev said | 12:36pm | Report comment
Yeah I’ve been one too – he’s certainly make me eat some humble pie (although I still think Ponting should move on for the good of the team, I can no longer cite form as a reason to drop him which I could until these matches against India).
I think Hughes will be back as well. Cowan, Warner, Hughes, Marsh, Khawaja, Clarke, Watson is a good 7 to take 6 spots once Ponting and Hussey retire (maybe Ponting’s century will give him good grace and he’ll retire at the end of the SCG test?).
12:46pm
CJ said | 12:46pm | Report comment
I like it. But really, I’d like more than a dozen innings out of Cowan, Warner, and Marsh before we annoint them the saviours. Until then, perhaps we need Ponting to steady the ship (but let me make it clear: only for as long as he CAN steady the ship).
We need to really look at this in the big picture. The selectors could, quite easily, have picked Bollinger/Siddle/Hilfenhaus/Doherty as bowling attack: we’d have missed out on two really good young quicks (Cummins/Pattinson) and a solid spin option in Lyon. That said, I’m giving half-credit for Lyon since the ends don’t justify the means – the revolving door of spinners that produced him is not really a good way of finding Test cricketers.

Red Kev said | 1:22pm | Report comment

12:19pm
Geoff Lemon said | 12:19pm | Report comment
To be honest, India looked mentally shot in the first innings. None of them had the stomach for the fight bar Sachin, who seems to be feeling the pressure of carrying the team, and Dhoni, who played his first form knock for a long while.
I wouldn’t expect India to make more than 250-300 in their second innings, meaning they needed to keep Australia under a 100-run lead on the first to have a prayer. That hope is mostly gone.
So, a lead of 100 to 150, let’s say…

Marsh hasn’t made a good case for himself, so he looks likely. It would either be that or lose one of the openers, who’ve both done more in recent times.
Then it’s a matter of whether you push Ponting, Clarke, or Hussey up to 3. Huss was an opener, and guys like Ian Chappell have said Clarke should take the responsibility of first drop.
11:56am
Red Kev said | 11:56am | Report comment
