The league-leading Central Coast Mariners host the embattled Newcastle Jets in the third F3 Derby of the season this afternoon. Join us from the kick-off at 5.30pm AEDT for commentary of the action from Blutetongue Stadium.

This is the rubber match for the two sides, the Mariners having won the most recent clash just over a month ago by a score of 2-0, and the Jets getting the victory in round three, scraping home with a 1-0 win care of a first half Jeremy Brockie goal.

This fixture is well-known for its animosity, and despite the differing fortunes of the two clubs in season seven, the series is pretty evenly split; the Mariners have enjoyed nine wins to the Jets’ eight, with another eight draws.

Regardless of the result the Mariners will remain on top of the ladder – the three points at stake will hold far more importance to the Jets, who may fall behind Gold Coast United to last place should they lose, and nothing would please the Central Coast more than to be the ones that send them there.

Though to be fair, a win for the away side would be enough to get them into the top six, at least temporarily, such is the ferocious competition for the last couple of spots in the A-League finals series.

With no Matt Simon there will be an increased sense of burden on the shoulders of Bernie Ibini, who now leads the line, but hasn’t scored since the round twelve win over Perth.

On the other side of the ball, Byun Sung-Hwan will be keen to atone for last week’s debacle in which he was responsible for not one, but two own goals.

The Mariners will also aim to uphold their reputation for miserly defence, having only conceded more than a single goal once this season (and that was thanks to a Brett Emerton free kick in the last couple of minutes when they beat Sydney 3-2) and have only been breached ten times in the entire season; a fantastic record.

In addition, Central Coast is undefeated in their last twelve game, a club record. And they’ll be hoping to stretch it to lucky number thirteen.

It might be the A-League’s fiercest rivalry. Who takes the honours this evening? We’ll have live scores and play by play commentary from 5.30pm AEDT. Join us for news, lineups and formations prior to the kick-off, and if you’ve got an opinion on the action, leave your thoughts in the space below.
