Fiery Brisbane striker Besart Berisha has been told to control himself better after sparking an ugly post-match melee in the Roar’s dramatic A-League escape-act against Sydney FC.
Two goals in the last minute of injury time gave the Roar an astonishing 2-1 comeback victory over the Sky Blues at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
In crazy scenes reminiscent of last season’s grand final, Berisha headed home the match-winner in the dying seconds before triggering the emotion-charged melee.
The Albanian international had words with Sydney defender Pascal Bosschart after the final whistle when he’s understood to have responded to an incident during the match and offered to meet the Dutchman in the change room.
Berisha ran from the field and then players and officials from both camps came together as tempers flared on the sidelines.
Sydney’s goalkeeper Liam Reddy, a former Brisbane player, and his ex-team-mate Mitch Nichols, who helped set up the winning goal, were in the thick of the skirmish, while Berisha was restrained by non-playing team-mate James Meyer.
Roar midfielder Massimo Murdocca was unaware of what sparked the conflict but felt Berisha, who overcame a calf injury to play, needed to rein in his natural passion.
“I think Besart has got to try and control himself a little bit,” Murdocca said. “He’s a fiery character but look we love him as a player and he’s the sort of player we want up front.”
Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou was disappointed by the spiteful scenes which tarnished a thrilling climax to a gripping match.
“We do a lot of things really well in our game but fighting isn’t one of them – we should leave that to other sports,” Postecoglou said.
“The vision I saw, Bess shouldn’t have gone over there (to Bosschart).
“There was enough going around but I don’t think anything happened.
“If (Berisha) has crossed the line I’ll address it with him, but at the moment I’ll let things die down and get the information we need and go from there.”
Brisbane’s unlikely victory was set up by a brilliant Mohamed Adnan free kick in the 94th minute when the impressive Bahraini defender lobbed the Sydney wall and gave Reddy no chance.
The Sky Blues, who hit the lead with a 39th-minute strike from Mark Bridge, were left gutted by the defeat after looking certainties to snap their six-match victory drought.
“We couldn’t ask anything more of our own performance,” said captain Terry McFlynn. “Everything that we could do we did tonight.”
Brisbane’s win cut frontrunners Central Coast’s lead to six points at the top of the competition after the Mariners were held to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle.
While the Roar surprisingly started the match with Berisha, German playmaker Thomas Broich and Brazilian striker Henrique were eased back from injuries off the bench to lift their side in the second half.

Touché Qantas
However, note that I didn’t talk about SFC being poor. Rather, I talked about Roar making a good comeback. See the difference?

No Roger—-you can’t sit on the fence and pretend that all is right on the field. You have to put your knowledge out there even tho some may not agree with your analysis.
Just be fair and honest as you see it—I always have been.

What a performance by the Brisbane Roar, since Broich and Henrique came on they completely dominated. Still no-one could have predicted 2 late goals in the final 2 minutes of the game, Sydney went from winning, to drawing to losing in the space of no time.
What a game football is!
Brisbane Roar did the A-League a huge favour and thanks to them, the rest of Australia have large grins on their faces!

Yes congratulations to the ROAR. SFC didn’t deserve the win, but to lose it in extra time was heart breaking.

Sydney were terrible for 3/4s of the match and the team has some outstanding players in it. With Nicky Carle and Brett Emerton in the side one would think they could control the match. How disappointing it is to see a team like SFC being dominated with two socceroos in the side—being out played and dominated by a team that has only one fringe Socceroo player in it. How can Emerton and Carle be so ineffective when they should be owning the games they play in? The time has come to stop importing foreign managers who are really mediocre making bad decisions releasing good players—replacing them with under performing players—-something is wrong with the SFC’s team training and preparations. The preparations have to be wrong or the manager’s ideas are being ignored, which ever it is, this has to change—-the SFC manager is far too lenient with discipline and SFC need a stronger personality to get this team firing like the ROAR.

Just on the bru ha ha. I watched the replay this morning and it appears that in the 83rd min when Pascal and Berisha first clashed, Pascal gestures toward the sheds and suggests some afters. After the final whistle, it appears that Berisha accepted the challenge. Nothing in it.

Exactly right. Bozza made the comment on Fox that Boss was also involved in an altercation last week with a CCM player that had similar overtones. So the common element appears to be Mr. Boss – just this time Berisha decided to take up the challenge! Was Boss commenting on Berisha’s hair styling ???

Totally agree the Berisha performance after the match was outrageous. I hope he was red carded as it still can be issued after the whistle has blown for full time for bringing the game into disrepute…

Stu – agree wholeheartedly with you.I’ve watched the “ugly post-match melee” 3 times and have yet to see a punch thrown anywhere. There was plenty of “mouth-hooking” going on but in my time I’ve never seen anyone hurt by a “straight left” delivered by a tongue.
A “storm in a teacup” and I suspect the article was written by someone who has never played football at any competitive level or he would have known what caused all the “ugly VERBOSE post match” melee. jb

I must confess, I was looking forward to them fighting in the tunnel, my money is on Berisha, he was pumped!
As far as who is in the right and who is in the wrong, Bosschaart seems to be the common denominator for this. It’s a low act to threaten players off the pitch, and Bosschaart seems to have been repeat offending, unluckily for him though Berisha accepted his challenge!

About 10 minutes from time while Sydney were winning 1-0, Bosschaart was seen having close words to Berisha.
After Brisbane scored their second goal a poster from the Foxsports website said this “Sydney fans. Bosschart grabbed Berisha’s nuts just a couple minutes earlier. That’s what started the whole thing. Stop blaming others for your loss. It was all your fault. You have no-one to blame but yourself for parking the bus at half time.”
So that may explain Bosschaart’s yellow card at the end of the match, also that Bosschaart threatened Kwasnik to meet him after the game in the previous match, makes it blatantly obvious who the trouble maker is.
This Bosschaart fellow makes Kevin Muscat seem like a clean fair player, at least Kev kept things on the pitch! Too bad Sydney, your late loss was fully deserved, your team is playing boring rubbish that makes for no entertainment to your fans, and your center back is likely to receive a lengthy ban.

You’re kidding aren’t you AxelV?
Having played many sports I speak from experience when I say that when there is niggle and banter going on it usually goes both ways. Poor form of Berisha to try and carry this on after the whistle. If it is something racial or deeply personal that Bosschaart has said then report it through the proper channels, other wise shake hands and enjoy your win, see you on the pitch next time.
Kevin Muscat ended peoples football careers with his thugery, until Boss does something similar it is a poor comparison.

Very impressed by the roar. Well balanced side with some brilliant players. Sheer delight to watch. Wonder if they have a soft side as well. Brisbane is very lucky.
Axelv, we cant afford to have them fighting, we need them all on the pitch.
YEs, and dont they work hard. I was watching Broich and could not believe the amount of work he does, he is a brilliant player. Henrique is good as well.

Until Broich and Henrique came on, Brisbane were awful, their slow passing possession football excruciating to watch. B and H had an immediate impact. Suddenly, Nichols found another metre of pace. Sadly, Visconte and N-Faran are simply not up to filling the gap.
Ange needs another quality striker and playmaking midfielder pronto, otherwise the ACL will quickly go the way of all flesh.

RF,
We need greater depth (perhaps a creative midfielder) in the Champions League. However, we have reached the maximum quota of foreign players which means we will need to use an Australian (unless we don’t use existing foreigners which seems unlikely). James Holland (AZ), Robbie Kruse (Fortuna), Tommy Oar (FC Utrecht) and of course Matt McKay (Rangers) are not playing regularly and could fit the bill.
