The fun continues from 7.00pm AEDT with the top-of-the-table second match of the Big Bash double-header with the Sydney Sixers playing host to the Perth Scorchers at the SCG.
Both sides have a semi-final spot sewn up but there is still a lot to play for in the lead up to the big ones.
The Sixers are likely to be back at the SCG for their home final if they can win here, while Perth can ensure they’ll finish first and play their remaining matches in the west if they take the points.
Perth are led the old brigade; Herschelle Gibbs is hitting runs like it’s 1999 and Marcus North has been the Cowan to Gibbs’ Warner.
Then there’s Brad Hogg. The 40 year-old Chinaman is mesmerising opposition batsmen like Michael Bevan bowling to West Indians.
Combine that with Mitchell Marsh’s ability to win a match with bat or ball, old combatants Katich and Collingwood and a mixed young bowling line-up and they’re top of the tree for a reason.
Like Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory, the Sixers join the Stars as the glamour team of the competition.
Test stars Watson and Haddin will be looking for form in their returns, joining Maddinson as the keys with the stick.
The Sixers injury and Test list means you never know who will turn out, but Stuey MacGill is likely. With runs on the board and pressure building, Magilla’s big leggies can get the Sixers across the line.
Will the Scorchers go well away from the WACA? Can the Sixers find 11 players fit and in-form enough to topple the league leaders?

Great game. The Scorchers may have missed the points but they finish top of the table, so grab the home semi. The Sixers will rue their missed opportunities, a few bad moments in the last five overs saw them leave the door open.
Steve Smith (51 from 25) was great with the bat for the Sixers, and his dynamic fielding (as ever) is often the difference in these sorts of tight ones.
Marcus North anchored the Scorcher’s innings (59 from 52), but without Herschelle Gibbs, they lacked a sparring partner to get them across the line.
The performances of the returning Test players was mixed – Shaun Marsh never got into gear and is lacking his usual balance, Brad Haddin’s knockers would go to sleep happy, more dropped catches than runs is not a good stat for a wicket-keeper.
The flipside was Mitchell Starc. I still have question marks about his consistency, but his 3 wickets in one over here was another improvement from the greap leap he made in Perth. Marsh, Marsh and Collingwood in one over for 2 runs in such a close game, that over was just about the difference between the two sides.
Thanks to ETrain and Red Kev for sharing their thoughts, see you semi-final time!

Sixers win! Coulter-Nile goes one bounce to long on, throw comes back and gets North. Brett Lee celebrates like he’s won the Superbowl. That was a terrific match. Sixers by 1 run

Was listening on ABC Digital, and with two balls to go, they cut the coverage, and go to some boring diatribe and interview with that Scottish former Unionist red-ragger now Senator Doug Cameron carping on about jobs and the Carbon Tax.
Not good enough ABC, either broadcast it all or don’t bother, and especially don’t bother making us endure that boor Doug Cameron, when the match is a cliff-hanger.

Heard audio of where ABC cut off yesterday’s game – wow, 3 balls to go in a tight one and it went to some half-finished sentence from a political commentator. In the words of Phil Gould “no no no no no”.

Wow! Lee rissoles Coulter-Nile, but umpire has called it a no-ball. 6 off 2 with a free hit. And it’s shown on replay that his foot was grounded behind the line before shifting. Yikes!
Another no-ball from Lee and free hit again

Starc on fire, 3 dots, then the mid-pitch conference, Coulter-Nile hits the next for four, then an overthrow after Coulter-Nile drops one at the stumps, before Starc drops a tough caught and bowled. This game has it all.

Good overs from O’Keefe and Henriques offset by 5 wides from O’Keefe. Game within a game – Scorchers need 10+ an over, now the finals equations are set. Scorchers need 152 and they can lose and host a final, if the Sixers can restrict them below that, they get a final at the G.

There’s the Haddin drop all the Had-haters have been waiting for. North’s Perth’s biggest chance of getting the Scorchers home, big edge, Haddin moves pretty well but can’t hold on. The whispers get louder. Reprieve for North, PS need 10 an over

Red Kev said | 9:42pm | Report comment
I called it (back in my comment at 7:16)! i knew Haddin would drop a catch!
He dropped it exactly like he dropped the two in the tests – he wasn’t moving his feet, instead he went for the big showboating dive.
SURELY this match (a two-ball duck and a dropped catch) is the death knell of Brad Haddin’s international career (in every form of the game).

For batting no, for bowling no, but fielding never changes and that is all wicketkeeping is – catching, which Haddin can no longer do.

Shaun Marsh’s dismissal worrying. Bit of a swish, wide of off stump and he’s caught playing away from his body and played on. Ugly. Mitch Marsh just got absolutely cleaned up, full ball trying to drive, castled, and Collingwood did not want to be there. 3/34 after 5, in comes Katich
9:22pm
Dixie said | 9:22pm | Report comment
Make that 3 for the over! Starc brings one back, Collingwood caught on the crease, Paul Wilson tells the Pom to get out of his house. Starc a confident bowler at the moment. I guess he’s at the oposite end of the spectrum to Marsh. Scorchers in disarray
9:18pm
Red Kev said | 9:18pm | Report comment
Awwww there goes Shaun Marsh. Starc clean (okay so it was an inside edge onto off-stump) bowls him.
And then adds little brother clean bowled next ball.
Go Starc!
(I will admit to disappointment that Shaun Marsh made it to double figures, but you can’t have everything).

Dixie said | 8:48pm | Report comment
Nice catch by Shaun Marsh on the last ball leaves the Sixers with 176. Good score, mainly set up by the explosive Steve Smith. The short boundary will come into play. The out-of-form Marsh has replaced the in-form Herschelle Gibbs, a lot depends on him.
Is 176 enough? If Marsh is to score runs here, does that rectify his recent Test failures. Discuss these as well as the second half in a couple of minutes.
8:51pm
Red Kev said | 8:51pm | Report comment
I don’t like using T20 form to look at test players to be honest, far too different. Marsh’s 99* before the Boxing Day test is a case in point. I rate Marsh as a limited overs cricketer, not a test match player (interestingly his old man was a far better ODI player too).
9:01pm
Dixie said | 9:01pm | Report comment
I agree, different games, brings up the debate on the timing of the tournament. He’s been found pushing at the ball since returning to Test cricket. I’ve changed on Marsh in the medium term though. I didn’t think he deserved selection in Sri Lanka with his FC record, but he proved me wrong. I think he has the game but needs to be fit and in form.
9:03pm
Red Kev said | 9:03pm | Report comment
No way he deserves any chances or faith ahead of Khawaja. I’d be happy if Ponting was gone and both were in the (test) side, but with room for only one Marsh is not even close to the player Khawaja is. Mickey Arthur’s love affair with Marsh sickens me.
9:18pm
Dixie said | 9:18pm | Report comment
I’m concerned with Arthur having a vote, and Clarke for same reason, Arthur spent seasons with WA, it’s natural for him to have knowledge and perceptions about them – his job was previously about getting players up to the next level, if he thinks he’s half good he must think have Marsh on his list. Can’t be neutral.
8:42pm
Dixie said | 8:42pm | Report comment
Brett Lee and Rohrer must be good mates. O’Keefe misses one, runs out Rohrer, Lee comes in, having none of it, misses, runs out O’Keefe. Under 180 likely now.
8:40pm
Dixie said | 8:40pm | Report comment
Sixers leaving nothing in the tank. McCullum gone, Rohrer out to the old under 10s dismissal trying to steal a bye and Ronchi was up to it, throwing down the pegs. 175 with 3 balls left, under/over 180?

Red Kev said | 8:13pm | Report comment
Smith has got to be the most unconventional batsman I have ever seen. He looks right at home in a T20 game, but when I saw him in tests the other year I fell over from shock. Half his shots look like they are adapted from other games (tennis, baseball) with a few pure cricket shots thrown in for good measure. I like to watch him play though.

Maddinson makes the most of the short off-side boundary, snicking Edmonson for consecutive sixes over third man. The first a big juicy one that went ten rows back, the second more a result of an overly exuberant Lalor at third man charging in to see it sail over his head. Sixers hitting sixes
