The season is about to get tough for the Melbourne Heart – very tough. Join us at 7pm tonight when the Heart host the Mariners for the first of two testing games in the space of three days that will define the Heart’s season.
After an incredible run of wins, which saw the Heart temporarily take second spot on the table, they have dropped their last two home games, both against middling clubs in Adelaide and Perth.
If that wasn’t bad enough: the Heart host the top team tonight, and the second top team in three days’ time. To make matters worse their last game was only three days ago, i.e. by the time the Heart meet the Roar, the Heart would have played three games in six days.
And if all that wasn’t bad enough for the Red and White: inspirational skipper, Fred, will miss all games.
The good news? The Heart welcomed back some experience into the team in their last game, with Jonaton Germano and Alex Terra coming off the bench in the second half.
The young Heart team need all the experience they can get, with their immaturity being well exploited by Dad’s Army in their last outing.
As for the Heart’s opponents tonight, the Mariners, well, they are sailing smooth waters with nary a cloud in sight.
I can’t remember their last loss. They are six points on top with a game in hand, and they welcome back the robust and competitive duo of Pedj Bojic, Rostyn Griffiths, and just for good measure one of the best full backs in the league, Joshua Rose, has just signed a long term deal.
Little wonder Arnie is walking around these days with a permanent wry smile on his face.
We have to be honest here, the Heart do not have the personnel to withstand the battle-hardened Mariners, who will win this 2-0 in what will seem like a bit of a training run to them.
The Heart’s season has just been hit by stormy waters.

What a mighty effort from HEART – all but won it except that Ryan had a blinder tonight. When CCM scored I wasn’t angry just relieved. It was as if I was resigned to the fact that we weren’t going to score and somehow they were going to get the tap in we deserved. Oh well, off to AAMI for Roar this Sat.

It’s a reminder again, if we needed one, that youthful exuberance will get you so far, even knocking on the door of an unlikely win – but nothing can replace the cool, calculating mind of the seasoned campaigner, or campaigners, as the case was tonight. It took just one moment of sharpness, at the very death knell.

I owe Heart an apology, I said at the start that they couldn’t go with CCM, and when they did plus some the most of that first half, I speculated that they couldn’t keep up the tempo, but except for maybe the first 10 minutes of that 2nd half, the Heart did keep up the tempo, chased everything down, and got the ball forward in double quick time, and in the last 20 minutes, Heart must have forced Ryan to make a dozen saves, at times the ball seemed to bobble along the line, but it wouldn’t go in.
It has to be said, CCM did not lose faith in their game plan, or in each other, and when the moment came, they took it, Kwasnik’s finish was spot on, unfortunatley for Heart, Behich had at least three better chances than that, and put each of them straight at the keeper.

Heart started game at full speed ahead, instructions were clearly to go for it: they pressed high, got numbers into the box, caused turnovers in good positions, and created a few good chances, most importantly, the Heart stopped CCM from getting into their rythm, but we did see a glimpse late in that half that the Mariners were coming, not hard to understand why, Heart’s effort in first 35min chasing everything down would take a lot out of a team with only a 3 day break.
I expect CCM to steal at least one goal up in the second half and then close down the game.

van ‘t Schip has been at pains to say that the next three days will not define the Heart’s season, but I disagree.
The are odds on favourites to drop both games and that effectively puts them out of the running for a top two spot which at a minimum guarantees you hosting a prelim final (if you don’t get straight through to the grand final).
And then the teams around 6th and 7th aren’t all that far behind, so these two games are critical.
