Sydney FC are in freefall and looking for some way to snap out of this losing streak as they play their catch-up match against Perth Glory tonight from Campbelltown Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for just after 17:30 EDT.
Originally meant to take place a couple of months ago, the Perth weather is to blame for all flights in the West being blocked, seeing the Glory unable to make their plane to face the Sky Blues in what was meant to be the ‘Regional Round’.
The strange kick-off time is to be attributed to the other fixture later in the evening, angering more than a few Sydney season ticket holders who may struggle to make it out of the CBD in time for the start of play.
But on to the two teams; Sydney left their fans completely baffled and Brisbane’s absolutely delirious as they somehow LOST a game which they led in the 93rd minute, thanks to a late free kick from Saeed Adnan and an extremely late poacher’s goal from Besart Berisha.
Just when it looked like Sydney were going to break out of their funk and consolidate a place in the top six with an impressive road win, they threw it all away and lost for the fourth straight week.
A loss here will see them equal the record for most consecutive losses in history, and will break the record for most home losses in a row with three.
Perth have won their last two road games and after an impressive showing at AAMI Park against Melbourne Heart last weekend, Ian Ferguson’s men will definitely fancy their chances. History is not in their favour however, as they have lost their last five matches against Sydney.
Jamie Coyne will play his first match against his old club, with fellow defender Pascal Bosschaart sidelined thanks to picking up his fifth booking of the season in that loss to the Roar.
It’s difficult to see Sydney losing another game in a row, especially at home to an opponent that they traditionally perform well against. But keeping in mind that it will be an unfamiliar venue for both teams, as well as the potential for a miniscule crowd thanks to the midweek kick-off time, Perth have every reason to fancy their chances.
Join us just before 17:30 for all the team news, line-ups and formations.

Can’t believe the number of chances it takes Glory to convert. Chances:Goals ratio must be one of the worst in the league, haha.
Ah well, the point is good. A few more days rest before Victory would have been nice, but at least it is at home. Five games in 17 days, three of them away, after all, is a stiff series. Of course, those five have generated 9 points, which is all kinds of good for us. After all, Glory’s best ever run is eight games undefeated, if I recall correctly.

Well, another Sydney implosion destroys any chance of a victory. That’s now two points from their last eighteen – a draw is probably fair, given neither team was at all impressive.
No crowd figure was posted but it couldn’t have been more than a few thousand. Which is surprising, given the 30 degree heat, location completely abstract from the Sydney fan base and ridiculous kick-off time….surely they should’ve had 20,000?
Anyway, I’m really not sure where Sydney go from here. A home game against Gold Coast on Sunday…where surely Coach Lavicka will make some changes. McFlynn has to go, Kisel not much better, which pains me to say as I’m a big fan of the Slovakian.
Thanks for tuning in, feel free to follow us on twitter @TheRoarSports or myself @TheMattBungard – and make sure to check out the rest of our live blogs tonight and during the week for football, tennis and the Tour Down Under. Thanks.

Matt – Why don’t you just come out and say it,mid-week football is “on the nose” for Australian fans and the continuing “trials” being programmed by the FFA points to 2 things (1) They are not willing to,despite overwhelming evidence, from this and last year’s crowd figures, to admit to their mistake,or, (2), The tail is wagging the dog when it comes to match programming and that is slightly more worrying. jb

You’re not wrong – though I can’t help but feel the location and time hurt the numbers…they did get 11,000 against the Heart on a Thursday night a couple of weeks ago.

the mid-week game was part of a “community round” where games were taken to regional areas.
i can’t believe the amount of whinging i see on forums and social media from sydney fans about having to travel only an hour or so to see their team in action. try being a football fan from an outer lying region, if i want to see a game i have to travel for more than two hours.

Don’t know what you could be suggesting, jb, if it isn’t mid-week then when can we fit the extra games? Its not like we can realistically run double-headers or anything. Its mid-week or start losing your start or your finale to the NRL/AFL media.

in fairness, the FFA did learn from last year’s experience and have reduced the quantum of mid-week games, with most coming through the school holiday period, which is the best time to have them (if you’re going to have them).
As Nathan says, there are a couple of rounds of games they have to squeeze in, so I think we have to have at least two rounds worth at the moment (one being the Big Wednesday, which was successful).
The other thing about this arvo’s game is that two other events have occurred simultaneously:
1. a washed out game needed to be rescheduled; and
2. the particular game was part of the regional round of games, which isn’t a bad concept.
So, all in all, I think it’s just a bit of bad luck and not worth worrying about too much.

Seconds after this, Perth take 30 seconds to take the throw in and then jockey the ball into the corner flag area. Another great call.

Unbelievable. Hughes gets on the end of the outswinger and nods it just inside the near post. What on earth was Scott Jamieson doing? He wandered a metre or so off the post after Berger whipped the ball in and had he just stood next to the woodwork like he was supposed to, it would’ve smacked him in the shins. Sydney again shoot themselves in the foot.
