The qualification equation for the Melbourne Stars isn’t a hard one for their game against the Adelaide Strikers in the final league game of the Big Bash League at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

We’ll bring you the live scores and commentary of the action throughout the game, with the match starting at 7.00 pm AEDT on January 19.

If the Stars win, they will be through to the semi-finals while a loss will push them out of the tournament.

Of course, there is always that chance of an odd shower spoiling the game and if the teams have to share the points, the Stars will pip Brisbane Heat to make it to the last-four stage.

Stars looked down and almost out when they slumped to their third defeat in four games at home against the Scorchers. But a late resurgence and a bit of good fortune with the rain saw them win two in a row, giving them a chance to attempt the semi-finals.

A hat-trick of wins will give them an opportunity to take on the Scorchers for a chance to play the final.

David Hussey has played a couple of vital knocks in the tournament while Rob Quiney is fifth in the list of top run-getters in the tournament. Luke Wright’s timely return to form, with that century against the Hurricanes should help as well.

On the other hand, the Strikers need to not only win the game but also get better Brisbane Heat’s net run-rate to make it to the last four. And to do that they either need approximately an 80-run victory or a win with around 10 overs to spare.

Given how the Strikers have generally struggled towards the second half of the Big Bash League, this will be a tough cookie to crack.

After winning their opener by a comfortable 67-run margin, the Strikers looked to be on their way to emulate the South Australian Redbacks from the previous edition.

Surprisingly then, they have won only one of their remaining five games, while the four defeats include two by 42 and 64 runs each.

The dents these huge defeats would have left will be huge.

For a batting unit so strong on paper, the 87-run collapse in their previous game was as shocking as their successive qualification for the Champions League T20.

Captain Michael Klinger has tried his best to lead from the front but not too many of the rest have put their hands up in support. Callum Ferguson has yet to get back to his best while likes of Daniel Harris and Cameron Borgas haven’t been as effective as previous years.

Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon could be back for their respective sides.

The Stars should be favourites in this one despite the pressure on captain Cameron White to get some runs under his belt.

We will bring you the live coverage throughout the game from the Melbourne Cricket Ground at 7.00 pm AEDT and hope to receive your opinions as the action unfolds.
